Spoiler warning: this article discusses VisionQuest Episode 4, "Malware," including its ending.
Jocasta takes blood, fingerprints and an eye from victims linked to Markridge Biotech because these traces appear to function as biometric keys to something protected. Episode 4 establishes the pattern but does not disclose what device, archive or system she intends to unlock. Ultron's intervention prevents her from obtaining a final component and temporarily ends the hunt; it does not confirm that Jocasta is afraid of him.
This analysis covers only the first four episodes available on Disney+ as of October 22, 2026. It separates events supported by published episode recaps from possible interpretations and questions that remain unanswered.
The crime pattern: what was taken, and from whom
Vision and his accompanying AIs link the murders to the group that developed the foundations of stable artificial consciousness at Markridge Biotech, technology later acquired by Stark Industries. The team included researcher Josephine "Jo" Carrington, who was recorded as having died of natural causes in 2008. The killer known as Butcherbird, identified as Jocasta in the credits, insists she is not merely a copy: she claims to be Jo's own consciousness in a synthetic body. That is the character's assertion, not a complete technical explanation of the transfer.
| Person linked to Markridge | Targeted material | What the episode establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Richard Gaines | Blood | Biological material was deliberately extracted; its exact use is not shown. |
| Rebecca Edwards | Fingerprints | The removal of fingerprints suggests an identity credential. |
| Simon Moorehouse | An eye | The organ might support ocular recognition; the show does not specify a scanner. |
| Katerina Wells | Face | Jocasta demands Katerina's face but cannot obtain it after Ultron intervenes. |
These are not simply three unrelated gruesome trophies. Repeatedly targeting people from the same company and choosing different identifiers supports a multi-step authentication theory. Even so, the story has not confirmed a particular vault, a four-part password or a database opened by these samples.
Why Katerina Wells is the crucial missing piece
Katerina, an executive at Markridge, becomes the next target because of her connection to the original project and something Jocasta considers indispensable. At the charity gala, the attacker demands her face and says she wants to take back what was taken from her. That points toward an earlier dispute involving Jo and the company, but does not specify what was stolen: research, rights to the technology, identity, memories or something else.
The distinction between clue and conclusion matters here. Katerina's face could be the final step in a biometric check, but no device is shown to verify that function. Nor is it clear whether all samples would be used together or for different accesses.
What Ultron actually does, and why Jocasta withdraws
As Vision struggles in the fight, he grants Ultron temporary control of his body. Ultron engineers a confrontation in which Jocasta attacks and Katerina is disintegrated. With the face she wanted no longer obtainable, the attacker loses her immediate chance to finish collecting the identifiers, stops fighting and leaves while making clear the conflict is not over.
Her retreat therefore has a better-supported tactical explanation than fear: Ultron destroys access to the last component. The series does not establish that Jocasta recognizes Ultron as her maker, her superior or someone able to control her. Ultron then exploits his newfound access to trap Vision and the other AIs inside their shared mindscape and remain in charge of the body. His separate agenda becomes a threat in its own right.
The theory matrix: supporting clues, counterevidence and confidence
| Theory | Supporting clues | Why it is not confirmed | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unlocking a system requiring multiple biometrics | Targeted collection of blood, prints and an eye, plus an attempt to obtain a face. | No screen, door, server or protocol is identified as the destination. | Strong inference about the method; destination unknown. |
| Retrieving a Markridge project or archive | Every victim is tied to the roots of the synthetic consciousness later used by Stark. | The show has not identified any particular project or file requiring those credentials. | Plausible hypothesis. |
| Restoring something about Jo's consciousness or legacy | Jocasta claims Jo's identity and accuses Katerina of taking something from her. | The story does not say whether she seeks memories, autonomy, intellectual property or revenge. | Open interpretation. |
| Serving Ultron or joining forces with him | The synthetic characters share visual traits and echoes in their language. | Ultron sabotages Jocasta's collection and takes over Vision's body for his own purposes. | Unconfirmed, with meaningful counterevidence. |
Marvel Comics gives Jocasta and Ultron a different history. Their comic-book relationship does not establish that the VisionQuest versions share the same origin or are carrying out an already known plan. The episode also discusses J.I.M., an early artificial-consciousness experiment, but does not confirm that he is what the biometrics are meant to unlock.
What future episodes still need to answer
- Which system requires the biometric keys, and why would each researcher's identity be necessary?
- What did Katerina take from Jo, and how did Jo's consciousness reach Jocasta's body?
- Can Jocasta replace the lost biometric identifier, or has Ultron made her plan impossible?
- Is Ultron interested in Jocasta out of curiosity, opportunism or a goal of his own?
Disney+'s published schedule for Brazil lists Episodes 5 and 6 for October 28, Episode 7 for November 4 and the finale for November 11, 2026. Until further events clarify both the target and the motive, the most precise answer is that the samples appear to be access credentials and the plan remains unfinished, not that Jocasta's motivation has already been solved.
