Supernatural season 3: Dean's deal and why Sam cannot save him

Dean's deal to resurrect Sam begins in season 2 and drives the search for a way out in season 3. Here is how Ruby, Lilith, and No Rest for the Wicked shape the ending.

Spoiler warning: this article reveals events from season 2, episode 22, and the season 3 finale, including No Rest for the Wicked (episode 16).

Dean Winchester cannot escape his deal because Sam's resurrection was purchased with Dean's soul and a deadline of just one year. By the time the brothers learn that Lilith controls the contract, they have lost crucial options and cannot defeat her before it expires. In the finale, hellhounds kill Dean, and his soul is shown in Hell.

The deal is made at the end of season 2. Season 3 follows its consequences: Dean's fear, Sam's determination, Ruby's ambiguous assistance, and the late discovery of who actually has the power to decide what happens to the promised soul.

What did Dean trade to bring Sam back?

In All Hell Breaks Loose: Part Two (2x22), Jake had fatally wounded Sam. Unable to accept losing his brother, Dean summons a crossroads demon and offers his soul in return for Sam's life. He tries to bargain for ten years but gets only one. The deal includes a crucial condition: if Dean tries to escape it, Sam will die again.

That is why the problem driving season 3 is not simply finding a protective ritual. Dean wants to stay alive, but not at the cost of the life he has just restored. Sam, meanwhile, refuses to accept that his return has condemned Dean.

Searching for a way out: the episodes that change the plan

  1. 3x05, Bedtime Stories: with the Colt once again able to kill demons, Sam summons the crossroads demon and demands Dean's release. She says she merely brokered the deal and that a superior holds the contract. Sam kills her, but the deal remains in force.
  2. 3x09, Malleus Maleficarum: Ruby saves Dean from a witchcraft attack and reveals more about demons to the brothers. Crucially, she admits to Dean that she cannot save him and wants him to prepare Sam for the war that will continue after his death. Sam's trust in her does not make her promises proven facts.
  3. 3x12, Jus in Bello: Ruby identifies Lilith as a rising force in the demonic conflict. The assault on the police station and the deaths of those left behind after the brothers escape show how dangerous this opponent is. Bela has also stolen the Colt, depriving the Winchesters of the weapon on which they had pinned their hopes.
  4. 3x15, Time Is on My Side: Sam considers the immortality method used by surgeon Doc Benton, which depends on harvesting other people's organs. Dean refuses to survive that way. Meanwhile, Bela reveals that she also made a deal and says Lilith holds both her contract and Dean's. The information comes when their time has nearly run out.

Could Ruby have saved Dean?

Ruby takes part in the search for answers, helps the brothers, and carries a knife capable of killing demons. But she also withholds information. In episode 3x09, she tells Dean she cannot free him from his fate. Later, in the season finale, she argues that Sam could draw on powers he has not yet mastered to destroy Lilith.

Dean rejects that approach because he does not want Sam to follow the path a demon is urging him to take. His resistance does not make Ruby's proposal a confirmed solution: the season does not establish that Sam can already control those powers and use them in time to cancel the contract. In an interview published by BuddyTV in February 2008, creator Eric Kripke also described Ruby's intentions as deliberately hard to read.

What happens in No Rest for the Wicked?

In episode 16, which originally aired in the United States on May 15, 2008, roughly 30 hours remain before the deal expires. Bobby locates Lilith in New Harmony, Indiana. Dean, Sam, and Bobby head there with Ruby's knife, but face a town guarded by demons and an enemy possessing a young girl's body.

During the confrontation, Dean realizes Lilith has left the child's body, preventing Sam from attacking her by mistake. When the deadline arrives, the brothers attempt to shield themselves from the hellhounds, but Dean discovers that Lilith has taken over the body Ruby had been using. Lilith lets the hounds in, and Dean is killed in front of Sam.

Lilith then unleashes a supernatural attack against Sam, who emerges unharmed. Shocked that it failed, she abandons the possessed body before Sam can strike her with the knife. Lilith is not defeated. The final scene shows Dean imprisoned in Hell, crying out to his brother for help. His damnation is no longer a future threat: it has happened.

Why do the brothers fail?

  • The contract protects the original bargain: the clause threatening Sam's life makes breaking the deal risky without knowing who controls it.
  • Killing the intermediary changes nothing: episode 3x05 establishes that the summoned crossroads demon does not hold the contract.
  • The alternatives are inadequate or unacceptable: the Colt is lost, Doc Benton's immortality requires victims, and Ruby's proposal depends on powers Sam has yet to master.
  • Lilith remains free when time runs out: even after locating her, the trio neither kills the demon nor secures Dean's formal release.

Taken together, these episodes present sacrifice as a trap within the family. Dean saves Sam in season 2, but season 3 has both men struggling to undo a choice that sets one brother's life against the other's. The ending confirms Dean's death and hints that something unusual lies behind Sam's resistance to Lilith's attack, without explaining its cause at that point. Those unanswered questions should not be confused with revelations from later seasons.
