Spoiler warning: this article reveals the events of all 22 episodes and the ending of Supernatural season 1.

The first season of Supernatural follows Sam and Dean Winchester through 22 episodes, from their search for their missing father, John, to a confrontation with the yellow-eyed demon. What begins as a series of encounters with folklore creatures and urban legends gradually connects to Mary Winchester’s death, Jessica’s murder and Sam’s visions. The finale does not eliminate the threat: the brothers rescue John, the demon escapes, and a truck hits the family car.

Originally broadcast on The WB from September 13, 2005, to May 4, 2006, the season combines largely self-contained cases with an ongoing mystery. The timeline below reconstructs the central events supported by episode guides and published accounts of key chapters; it is not a scene-by-scene transcript.

Episodes 1 to 8: early hunts and the search for John

01. Pilot

Sam has tried to leave hunting behind and study law, but Dean arrives with news that John has disappeared. Their search leads to the Woman in White, a spirit haunting a road. Back at college, Sam loses Jessica in a supernatural fire resembling the one that killed Mary Winchester. He decides to travel with Dean.

02. Wendigo

Coordinates left by John lead the brothers into the Colorado woods. Missing campers point to a wendigo, a creature associated with cannibalism. The case establishes that their father’s journal can direct them toward people in danger, even when it does not reveal where John is.

03. Dead in the Water

Suspicious drownings in a Wisconsin town lead Sam and Dean to a lake connected to an old secret. The water itself is central to the haunting. By helping a threatened family, Dean reveals a gentler side beneath his usual impatient attitude.

04. Phantom Traveler

An airplane disaster sends the Winchesters to investigate passengers and survivors. They uncover a demonic possession linked to plane crashes. The case broadens the show's threats: the enemies are no longer limited to ghosts and creatures from local legends.

05. Bloody Mary

A mirror game summons the spirit known as Bloody Mary. The entity targets people burdened by guilt and secrets, causing violent deaths. For Sam, the hunt intersects with his grief over Jessica and the troubling sense that his visions and premonitions matter.

06. Skin

An acquaintance of Sam is accused of murder, but the clues suggest someone copied his appearance. The culprit is a shapeshifter able to take other faces, including Dean's. The impersonation casts suspicion on the older brother and turns a monster case into a personal threat.

07. Hook Man

Violent deaths in an Iowa college town are tied to the legend of a man with a hook for a hand. The haunting links a religious past to conflicts in the present. The brothers must work out why the spirit targets particular people.

08. Bugs

Deadly insect swarms draw the Winchesters to a housing development built on Indigenous land. The attacks are associated with a curse and the site's history of violence. The danger escalates as different insects threaten residents.

Episodes 9 to 15: family, visions and difficult choices

09. Home

A vision sends the brothers back to their childhood home in Lawrence, where Mary died. Missouri Moseley, a psychic who knew John, helps investigate a poltergeist. Mary's spirit also intervenes to protect the family now living there. Their return brings the childhood tragedy into the ongoing mystery.

10. Asylum

An abandoned asylum holds spirits connected to a history of abuse. The brothers enter while young visitors are missing and encounter a force that provokes extreme aggression. The danger reaches Sam and Dean themselves, exposing tensions their hunting routine usually keeps buried.

11. Scarecrow

John calls, tells his sons to stop looking for him, and points them toward disappearances in Indiana. Sam pursues his father alone and meets Meg on the road, while Dean investigates sacrifices to a pagan deity involving a scarecrow. Sam returns when Dean is in danger. The split and reunion reaffirm their bond and introduce Meg.

12. Faith

Dean suffers a life-threatening heart injury during a hunt. Desperate, Sam seeks a faith healer who appears to perform miracles, but each cure comes at a cost: another person dies so someone else can live. The discovery forces the brothers to confront an uncomfortable question about the value of a life.

13. Route 666

Cassie, Dean's former girlfriend, asks for help after deaths on a road. The attacks are linked to a ghost truck and a racist crime from the past. The case revisits Dean's romantic history while its supernatural threat exposes the enduring consequences of prejudice and violence.

14. Nightmare

Sam foresees a man's death and discovers that Max, a young victim of abuse, has developed telekinesis and is taking revenge on relatives. The brothers find a disturbing connection: Max's mother also died in a supernatural fire. Sam's visions no longer look like an isolated phenomenon.

15. The Benders

Sam goes missing during an investigation, and Dean works with police officer Kathleen to find him. Their enemies are not supernatural at all: a human family kidnaps people to hunt them. The shift in threat shows that ordinary human cruelty also belongs in this series.

Episodes 16 to 22: Meg, the Colt and the final confrontation

16. Shadow

In Chicago, the Winchesters encounter Meg again and realize she commands shadow entities. The attacks are a trap intended to lure John, who briefly reunites with his sons and faces the danger alongside them. The family separates again for safety, while Meg's role in the demonic plot becomes clearer.

17. Hell House

A supposedly haunted house and an online horror site lead Sam and Dean to the legend of Mordechai. Collective belief appears to give the creature physical form, making it a tulpa. The episode also introduces amateur investigators Ed and Harry and uses humor alongside the danger of a fabricated story brought to life.

18. Something Wicked

Children in Wisconsin fall mysteriously ill because of a shtriga, a creature that drains their life force. Dean recognizes the monster from a traumatic childhood encounter in which Sam was endangered. The hunt sheds light on why Dean feels such a strong responsibility to protect his younger brother.

19. Provenance

Successive owners of an old family portrait are murdered. The brothers trace the painting's history and try to prevent further deaths. Sam also grows closer to Sarah, a personal connection that highlights how difficult it is for him to trust someone after Jessica's death.

20. Dead Man's Blood

Daniel Elkins, a hunter who knew John, is killed by vampires. Father and sons reunite to recover the Colt, an extraordinary gun capable of killing supernatural beings. The hunt changes the scale of their mission: the family finally has a weapon that could confront the demon they seek.

21. Salvation

John connects the demon's attacks to families with babies and identifies a possible target in Salvation, Iowa. Sam and Dean use a premonition to protect Monica and baby Rosie, but the demon escapes. Meg threatens the Winchesters' allies to demand the Colt. John tries to exchange a fake gun and is captured, leaving his sons to rescue him.

22. Devil's Trap

With Bobby Singer's help, Sam and Dean trap Meg in a devil's trap and exorcise the entity possessing her, learning where John is being held. After the rescue they discover that the yellow-eyed demon is possessing their father. Sam shoots John in the leg with the Colt but refuses to kill him, allowing the demon to flee. On the way to hospital, a truck driven by a possessed man crashes into the Impala, leaving all three unconscious.

How the search for John reshapes the season

At first Dean wants to find John, while Sam agrees to help but still hopes to return to college. Jessica’s murder makes that immediate return impossible and gives Sam a personal reason to hunt. Their father’s journal provides leads, although John’s coordinates and messages rarely offer straightforward answers.

The visit to their childhood home, Sam’s visions and Max’s story raise new questions about Mary’s death. Meg’s arrival, her ties to demonic entities and the discovery of the Colt bring the brothers closer to the force behind the fires. John also changes from an absent figure into an active participant in the pursuit.

Ending explained: why does the demon escape after John is rescued?

In episode 21, John attempts to mislead Meg with a fake Colt while his sons try to save a mother and her baby. Sam and Dean prevent another tragedy in the house, but miss their chance to kill the demon. Meg captures John, turning the next episode into a rescue mission.

In Devil’s Trap, Bobby helps contain Meg. The brothers free John and later discover that their enemy has possessed him. The demon reveals that the deaths of Mary and Jessica are tied to its interest in Sam. When John briefly regains control, Sam uses the Colt, but shoots his father in the leg instead of killing him. That decision saves John’s life and allows the demon to escape.

The final attack happens after the confrontation: a possessed truck driver crashes into the Impala as Sam drives an injured John and Dean toward the hospital. The episode ends without showing the three men recovering. The antagonist remains free, his plans for Sam are unresolved, and the family’s immediate fate is left in suspense.
