007 First Light: Is the game’s James Bond part of the movie timeline?

007 First Light tells a standalone James Bond origin story. Here is why it is not a Daniel Craig prequel, which familiar characters appear and whether you need to know the films.

007 First Light is not part of the continuity of the James Bond films. IO Interactive created a standalone origin story for the agent in collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios. The game is therefore neither an adaptation of an existing film nor an official prequel to the Daniel Craig movies. It draws on the franchise's characters and traditions to tell its own story.

That distinction matters because this Bond is also at the start of his career. Seeing him before he becomes the famous 007 may bring Casino Royale (2006) to mind, but similar origin-story premises do not place events on the same timeline.

Which James Bond appears in 007 First Light?

In the premise outlined by the developer, Bond is 26, serves as a Royal Navy air crewman and attracts MI6's attention after demonstrating courage and initiative. His actions in Iceland lead to his recruitment into the agency's revived 00 programme. Still impulsive and unfamiliar with the secret service's rules, he must learn how to operate as an agent.

The game follows that development. M recognises the young recruit's potential, while John Greenway, a former 00 agent in charge of training, represents a more disciplined approach. These are details from the officially presented story, not an account of a past already established by the films.

Why isn't it a prequel to Daniel Craig's films?

A prequel depicts earlier events within the same narrative continuity. For First Light to qualify as a prequel to Casino Royale, the game would have to be officially placed before that film and follow the same version of Bond. IO Interactive describes something different: a reimagined, original, standalone origin.

Released in 2006, Casino Royale launched Daniel Craig's era as the cinematic agent. 007 First Light offers another portrayal, performed by Patrick Gibson through acting and performance capture. No official connection has been announced that would make the game's journey the backstory of Craig's screen incarnation. Calling it a sequel or an adaptation of scenes from a particular film would be equally inaccurate.

What comes from the films, and what was created for the game?

James Bond's identity remains recognisable: MI6, international operations, M, Q, Moneypenny, specialised gadgets, infiltration, chases and situations in which charm and improvisation can work as well as force. This heritage is part of the franchise's language, but sharing characters or motifs does not establish a shared chronology.

The cast includes Patrick Gibson as Bond, Priyanga Burford as M, Alastair McKenzie as Q and Kiera Lester as Moneypenny. Lennie James plays John Greenway, introduced as Bond's mentor in this story, while Lenny Kravitz plays Bawma. A distinct cast and new relationships underline that the game presents its own versions rather than reproducing the films' performers.

Do you need to watch the films before playing?

No. The story begins with Bond's recruitment and explains his development within its own setting. Familiarity with the 007 movies may help you spot references and recognise expectations associated with the character, but it is not necessary to understand the starting point.

  • If you've never watched 007: you can follow the young recruit and the people he meets at MI6 without studying a film timeline.
  • If you know the franchise: M, Q, Moneypenny and spy gadgets are familiar references, not evidence that the same events happened on screen.
  • If you're interested in the gameplay: the design combines third-person action, stealth, technology, combat and driving, with different ways to overcome obstacles.

IO Interactive, known for Hitman, released the game on May 27, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Its launch announcement distinguishes those platforms from other versions, so the date should not automatically be applied to every console.

What is confirmed about continuity?

QuestionAnswer supported by official sources
Does the game adapt a movie? No. The story was created specifically for 007 First Light.
Is it Daniel Craig's Bond backstory? It has not been presented as a prequel or as part of the Craig films' continuity.
Do familiar characters return?Yes. M, Q and Moneypenny appear in versions played by the game's cast.
Must you know the films? No. The narrative is designed to stand on its own.

In short, First Light shares James Bond's identity and familiar elements while telling its own origin story. It is best approached as a self-contained interpretation of 007, not as a missing chapter of the film series.
