In Pokémon Legends: Z-A - Mega Dimension, the donuts Ansha makes from Berries serve two connected purposes: eating one awakens Hoopa's power, allowing it to turn distortions in Lumiose into hyperspace portals; during exploration, the ingredients can also grant effects that strengthen the Pokémon in your party. Those bonuses help against opponents whose hyperspace levels can push them above level 100, but they do not guarantee victory or mean that every Pokémon in that dimension exceeds that level.
Why does Hoopa need a donut to open a portal?
The expansion begins with spatial distortions appearing around Lumiose City. Hoopa can enlarge these distortions and transform them into passages to Hyperspace Lumiose, an altered version of the city. The trigger described by Pokémon is feeding Hoopa one of Ansha's donuts. The donut therefore awakens Hoopa's power; the Mythical Pokémon is what actually turns a distortion into a portal.
Ansha travels with Hoopa and makes the donuts using Berries collected by the player. The system supports expeditions into the new dimension, which Team MZ and Korrina help investigate. The official description presents the portals as access to an area for story and exploration, not as a way to randomly summon a particular Pokémon.
How do Berries change a donut's effects?
The donut's ingredients matter beyond opening the portal. According to Pokémon's official explanation from November 2025, different Berries can produce different effects while the party is in hyperspace, including making the player's Pokémon stronger. This separates access to the area, enabled by Hoopa, from preparing for the challenges on the other side.
Hyperspace Berries can be found inside Hyperspace Lumiose. Pokémon states that they produce better donut effects than ordinary Berries and are especially useful against foes with high hyperspace levels. The same explanation says particular ingredient choices may produce special donuts, but it does not provide a full recipe chart, odds, or guaranteed combinations. Such details should not be presented as officially established by that announcement.
From portal to challenge: what each step does
| Stage | Confirmed mechanic | Effect on the challenge |
|---|---|---|
| Distortion in Lumiose City | Hoopa eats Ansha's donut and enlarges the distortion. | The resulting portal provides access to Hyperspace Lumiose. |
| Making a donut | Ansha uses Berries; the ingredients affect the possible effects. | The party can gain advantages during an expedition, including stronger Pokémon. |
| Exploring hyperspace | Hyperspace Berries can be found in that dimension. | They can produce donuts with better effects than those made with ordinary Berries. |
| Facing hyper-strong Pokémon | Some opponents exceed level 100 because of hyperspace levels. | The bonuses help with preparation but do not guarantee victory. |
What does it mean for a Pokémon to exceed level 100?
Pokémon describes hyperspace levels that can push some Pokémon in Hyperspace Lumiose beyond the normal level 100 limit. This is a feature of encounters in that dimension. The materials reviewed do not say every opponent has such a level or that the level cap for progression throughout the base game has universally increased.
The area also contains species not ordinarily found in Lumiose and newly discovered Mega Evolutions. That expands the variety of encounters but does not establish which species will always appear above level 100. The documented connection is straightforward: Berries affect donut bonuses, Hyperspace Berries enhance those effects, and these resources help when facing exceptionally high levels.
Availability and changes after release
The Pokémon Company's announcement confirmed that Mega Dimension became available on December 10, 2025, for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. The DLC is sold separately and requires a compatible base game. Players must complete the main Pokémon Legends: Z-A story to progress through the additional campaign. Nintendo lists version 2.0.0 on December 9, 2025, while the commercial availability announcement is dated December 10. These are different records, and the patch date should not replace the announced release date.
Later updates made gathering ingredients more convenient. Version 2.0.1, released January 21, 2026, allowed players to buy several Berries at once at food stalls and made Berries available from Nouveau Café's Truck No. 3 after starting the DLC story. The update history reviewed lists version 2.0.2, dated March 18, 2026, as including general fixes without describing a change to the core donut-and-portal rule.
The confirmed sequence remains: ask Ansha to make a donut, feed it to Hoopa to access a distortion, and make use of ingredient-dependent effects while exploring. A particular recipe or guaranteed strategy against Pokémon above level 100 requires further evidence and cannot be inferred from the official announcements alone.
