Is Battlefield REDSEC Really Free? What You Get Without Battlefield 6

You can play REDSEC without buying Battlefield 6. Learn which modes are free, where Portal access stops, how progression carries over, and what purchases are optional.

Yes. Battlefield REDSEC is free to play, and you do not need to buy Battlefield 6. Electronic Arts provides REDSEC as a standalone experience: you can download it, enter matches and play alongside people who own Battlefield 6. Free access does not, however, include the campaign or every mode and map in the paid multiplayer game. You need an EA Account, a continuous internet connection and compliance with your platform's requirements.

REDSEC launched on October 28, 2025, alongside Battlefield 6 Season 1. The practical distinction is that REDSEC provides its own ongoing free-to-play offering, while the full game expands the content you can access. Cosmetic purchases and Premium Battle Pass tiers are optional.

What can you play for free in Battlefield REDSEC?

The free offering includes several match types, not just Battle Royale. Exact playlists and events can change between seasons:

  • Battle Royale: survival matches with environmental destruction, vehicles and squad-based teamwork. In the launch format described by EA, 100 participants play as either 25 four-person squads or 50 duos on the Fort Lyndon map.
  • Gauntlet (called Arena in Brazilian Portuguese): an objective-based competition with elimination rounds. The format presented at launch places eight four-person squads into missions that determine which teams advance.
  • REDSEC Ranked: a competitive squad-based Battle Royale mode with its own points, ranks and rewards. EA says REDSEC is enough to enter without purchasing Battlefield 6, although you must reach Career Rank 5 before playing.
  • Portal within REDSEC: lets you find, play and create community experiences using the available free resources, including areas of Fort Lyndon. This does not unlock every Battlefield 6 Portal map and mode.

In particular, EA explains that a Portal creation using content exclusive to the full game can require ownership of Battlefield 6, even when it appears in the community experience browser.

Playing REDSEC for free does not give you all of Battlefield 6. Anyone specifically looking for the campaign or the classic paid multiplayer modes should be aware of those limits.

Does progress in REDSEC carry over to Battlefield 6?

Yes. Overall progression is unified through your EA Account. If you start in REDSEC and later gain access to the full Battlefield 6 game, EA says your progress, unlocks and settings carry over with your account. Each experience also has its own challenges, so this does not mean every objective can be completed in both.

The Battle Pass is shared between REDSEC and Battlefield 6 rather than being a separate pass for the free game. Premium rewards and paid cosmetics do not change REDSEC's entry price: buying these extras is not required to access its free modes. Reward availability and events may vary from season to season.

Where can you download REDSEC, and what do you need?

According to EA's access guide, REDSEC is available for PC (EA app, Steam and Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Search the digital storefront for “Battlefield REDSEC” and choose the free option rather than accidentally selecting a paid Battlefield 6 edition.

  1. Open your PC or console's digital store and find Battlefield REDSEC.
  2. Download the free experience and install the required updates.
  3. Sign in with an EA Account and link your platform account if prompted.
  4. Maintain an internet connection to launch the game and join matches.

Additional platform conditions may apply, including account or subscription requirements in certain regions. EA recommends checking your store's rules and the minimum PC specifications before installing. Free to download does not mean playable offline.

Can you play with friends who bought Battlefield 6?

Yes. EA confirms that REDSEC players can squad up with Battlefield 6 owners in compatible REDSEC modes, including across supported platforms. Full-game owners access these experiences through the same launcher; this does not automatically unlock paid modes for friends who installed only REDSEC.

Is a Battlefield 6 free trial the same as REDSEC?

No. As a concrete example, EA's access guide lists a temporary free trial of the full Battlefield 6 game from October 15 to 19, 2026 on PlayStation and Steam. That trial offers broader access during the stated period, but it is time-limited. EA explicitly says players can still access REDSEC for free when the trial ends. The distinction matters because a dated promotion is not the same as REDSEC's ongoing free-to-play offering.

Information checked on October 19, 2026. Modes, playlists, rewards and regional requirements may change with subsequent updates.
