Spoiler warning: this article discusses events from the first two seasons of The Apothecary Diaries. It does not reveal how Season 3's new mysteries are resolved.
Maomao leaves the palace after the Shi clan crisis because Jinshi's publicly acknowledged position changes the professional relationship between them. By taking on his responsibilities as the emperor's younger brother, he is no longer simply the influential palace administrator she worked alongside. For an apothecary of much lower social standing, remaining in his service on the same terms becomes inappropriate. Maomao returns to the pleasure district and resumes her work at Verdigris House. Her departure is not the same as a break between them.
What happened at the end of Season 2?
The change follows the suppression of the Shi clan's rebellion. Jinshi steps out from behind the identity that had shielded his position at court and openly acts as a member of the imperial family, including taking on duties connected with the conflict. Maomao, who was caught up in events at the clan's stronghold, survives the crisis and helps address its aftermath.
Episode 48, the second-season finale, focuses on what the operation left behind. The official synopsis describes Jinshi reuniting with Maomao after the children are rescued from the fortress, with both worrying about the other's injuries. They must also consider what Loulan was trying to protect. The following season's change of setting grows out of that conclusion, not out of a new punishment imposed on Maomao.
Why does Jinshi's identity affect Maomao's job?
For much of the story, Jinshi works in the palace administration under an identity that conceals his place in the imperial family. His position allows Maomao to work closely with him, investigating incidents and applying her knowledge of medicine and poisons. Once his official status as the emperor's younger brother becomes public, the distance between them is no longer merely a matter of everyday etiquette.
Social hierarchy is the key. Someone with Maomao's background and rank cannot simply remain an imperial prince's personal collaborator without that closeness taking on greater social and political significance. Crunchyroll explicitly frames her departure this way in its introduction to Season 3: she recognizes that a person of her standing should no longer work beside him. This explains the decision without recasting it as banishment, a loss of interest in pharmacy, or romantic rejection.
Where does Maomao go, and what does she keep doing?
She returns to the pleasure district where she grew up and resumes her profession as an apothecary at Verdigris House. She has not lost her skills or the habit of noticing problems that others overlook. What changes is her workplace and formal connection to the court, not the insight that made her useful inside the palace.
That new routine is the starting point of the official Season 3 synopsis. Something unusual about a meal leads Maomao to investigate a possible threat involving insects and crops. The production describes the threat as a warning sign to investigate, not as a disaster that has already occurred. Her investigation illustrates why her expertise remains valuable beyond the palace walls.
What changes for Jinshi and their relationship?
Jinshi now faces the obligations of state more directly. The production highlights his standing as the emperor's younger brother, Loulan's warning of a possible nationwide disaster, and rumors surrounding a mysterious figure who is influencing the public. He must address problems beyond the routines of the inner palace while Maomao works in a different social setting.
The separation makes contact more complicated, but it does not erase their established trust. The gap in rank still exists and is now harder to overlook. Nor does leaving the palace, by itself, establish that Maomao and Jinshi have become a couple or ended their relationship. Their feelings remain a separate question from his institutional responsibilities.
What can be established about Season 3 so far?
Season 3 began airing in Japan on October 2, 2026, with Crunchyroll announcing streaming across the Americas, including South America. Its second part was announced for April 2027. The production says the story will expand from the palace to city streets and beyond, but that premise does not reveal how the new mysteries or the protagonists' relationship will end. The supported starting point is clear: Maomao is working outside the court, Jinshi is fulfilling his imperial role, and the problems they confront still connect them.
