Digimon Adventure: (2020) is a reboot, not a sequel to Digimon Adventure (1999). Toei Animation explicitly introduced it as a new version of the original series. It restarts Taichi and Agumon's adventure in a different story set in 2020. You therefore do not need to watch the 1999 anime before starting the 2020 show.
The key distinction for viewing order is this: Digimon Adventure 02, released in 2000, continues the 1999 story. It does not follow the plot of the 2020 reboot.
Why is the 2020 series a reboot?
In the 1999 television series, seven children arrive in the Digital World and must survive, understand their surroundings and find a way home. Toei's catalog lists 54 episodes for the original production. This is the starting point of the classic Adventure continuity.
When announcing the 2020 project, Toei described a completely revamped version featuring a new adventure for Taichi Yagami, Agumon and the other DigiDestined. The story is explicitly set in 2020, when a serious network disruption strikes Tokyo. Taichi is introduced once more as a fifth-grade pupil who becomes caught up in the Digital World while trying to help his family.
This fresh beginning does not fit the idea of following the same Taichi years after the events of the 1999 episodes. The 2020 show brings back recognizable characters and concepts but introduces them within a restarted storyline. A reboot does not mean an episode-for-episode remake, and the official material does not support treating the two shows as a single timeline.

Where does Digimon Adventure 02 fit?
Digimon Adventure 02 began in 2000 and is set three years after Taichi and his friends' adventure. Toei identifies it as a sequel to the first anime: Daisuke Motomiya, also known as Davis, and Veemon belong to a new group of protagonists, while the story builds on a Digital World already shaped by earlier events.
That is why the anime to watch before Adventure 02, if you want to understand the characters' past, is the 1999 series rather than the 2020 production. The 02 in its title belongs to that classic continuity; it does not designate a second season of the reboot.
The films can also be confusing because of their dates: Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna is a 2020 movie about the original-era characters as they grow older. Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning, released in 2023, revisits the Adventure 02 group. Neither should be confused with the television series rebooted in 2020.
What is the best viewing order?
- To follow the original continuity: start with Digimon Adventure (1999), followed by Digimon Adventure 02 (2000).
- To get into the franchise without prerequisites: you can start with Digimon Adventure: (2020), which introduces its own characters and conflicts afresh.
- To compare the approaches: watch the 1999 show first and the 2020 show afterward. That is a comparison order, not one shared chronology.
In short, two similarly titled works call for two different answers: Digimon Adventure: (2020) restarts the story; Digimon Adventure 02 continues the 1999 series. Keeping them separate prevents the timelines from being mixed up.
