Elden Ring Nightreign: what changes when you play solo, as a duo or as a trio?

Nightreign supports expeditions with one, two or three players. Learn about the official difficulty adjustments, the duo mode added in version 1.02, solo benefits and how to set your party size.

Arte de fantasia sombria dividida em três cenários, com um guerreiro sozinho, dois aventureiros juntos e um grupo de três diante de criaturas gigantes entre ruínas.

Elden Ring Nightreign can be played solo, as a duo or in a three-player team. The difference goes beyond having more characters in combat: your chosen party size defines the expedition format and triggers balance adjustments. Two-player expeditions were officially added on July 31, 2025, with update 1.02. Before that, the game had launched with a focus on three-player co-op and a solo option.

Bandai Namco did not publish a table of exact boss HP or damage percentages for each party size in the 1.02 notes. Numerical comparisons shared by players should therefore not be presented as official rules. What is confirmed is balancing based on participant count, alongside specific measures for solo play.

Solo, duo and trio: a practical comparison

Party sizeConnectionDocumented balancingWhat it means in practice
1 player (solo)Can be played offlineThe official guide confirms reduced enemy HP for solo play; update 1.01.1 added one automatic revival per night boss battle and increased rune gains. You choose your own route and face danger without teammates who can revive you.
2 players (duo)Online co-opVersion 1.02 enabled two-player expeditions and confirmed that balance adjusts to party size. You can support and revive each other and split tasks without having to fill the party with a third player.
3 players (trio)Online co-opThe official guide describes three-player co-op as the game's primary balancing target.More skill combinations and more teammates available to help, but a greater need for coordination.

These differences do not establish a universal difficulty ranking. How a run feels also depends on your familiarity with the characters, team composition and how much time you spend exploring Limveld before its nighttime encounters.

What difficulty changes did the patches confirm?

Solo compensation was documented early on. The official guide, published on June 17, 2025, states that enemies have reduced HP in one-player expeditions. Update 1.01.1, released on June 2 of that year, increased runes earned in solo runs and introduced an automatic revival after defeat, available once per night boss battle. This does not grant unlimited lives or remove the pressure of crossing the map without assistance.

For duos, the decisive change arrived in 1.02. Both Bandai Namco's patch notes and FromSoftware's Japanese notice document the new party size and balancing tied to participant count. Neither document specifies how much HP each boss gains or loses with two players. Official scaling can be confirmed, but universal numerical percentages cannot.

For trios, cooperative play remains the reference point. The publisher's guide states that the game was primarily balanced for groups of three. Teammates can revive a downed player by attacking them before their near-death gauge expires, and each character's abilities offer different tactical options. With three players, coordination helps take advantage of those options without guaranteeing an easy win.

How to select one, two or three players

  1. At Roundtable Hold, interact with the expedition table and select your target.
  2. Open the Matchmaking Setting tab and find Number of Players, the party-size option introduced by update 1.02.
  3. Choose 1, 2 or 3. To team up with friends, use the matching password options as directed in the game.
  4. Return to the Target tab and start the expedition. If you began matchmaking by mistake, the menu lets you cancel before matching finishes.

To play without an internet connection, select offline play in Network settings and keep the expedition set to one player. Cooperative play requires a connection. Older guides may call this setting Expedition Type: update 1.02 renamed it Number of Players. Being alone at Roundtable Hold does not, by itself, mean that the next expedition will be solo.

Which party size fits your situation?

  • Solo: suits players who want to explore at their own pace and learn routes and decisions without negotiating them. Enemy adjustments and solo-specific benefits are in place, but no other player can rescue you.
  • Duo: a practical choice for two friends who want to agree on a route together. You can divide attention between enemies, combine abilities and rescue your partner; a third player is not required.
  • Trio: fits players seeking the co-op experience the game was principally designed around. Three characters expand opportunities for support, offense and revival, provided the group manages objectives and positioning.

Every party size keeps the expedition's structure: exploration on the first two days, nighttime bosses, then a final confrontation on day three. The safe circle closes in as the run progresses. In other words, a larger party does not remove time pressure.

What about later game updates?

Interface details and balance can change through patches. When the official pages were checked on October 21, 2026, the game's patch listing still showed hotfix 1.03.5, published on March 31, 2026. It fixed a multiplayer performance issue without announcing the removal of duo mode. Bandai Namco advises players to apply the required update for online play. The core point of this comparison remains the official support for one-, two- and three-player expeditions, without invented scaling figures.
