Spider-Man's black suit first reached readers in The Amazing Spider-Man #252, which went on sale in the United States on January 31, 1984. Its in-universe origin did not appear until months later, in Marvel Super-Heroes Secret Wars #8. This was not a continuity mistake: Marvel published Peter Parker's return before the monthly crossover had finished showing what happened to him on Battleworld.
Two different timelines explain the apparent contradiction. Publication order follows when comics became available to readers. Story chronology begins with the heroes being taken to the Secret Wars, continues with Peter acquiring the suit, and ends with his return to Earth. Those sequences do not match.
When did the original comics actually go on sale in 1984?
The Grand Comics Database records for the original US issues distinguish cover dates, typically set months ahead, from actual on-sale dates. The timeline below includes the two other Spider-Man series published alongside the main title.
| Original issue | Cover date | US on-sale date | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marvel Super-Heroes Secret Wars #1 | May 1984 | Jan. 24, 1984 | The Battleworld miniseries begins. |
| The Amazing Spider-Man #252 | May 1984 | Jan. 31, 1984 | The black suit's first published appearance, as Peter returns. |
| Marvel Team-Up #141 | May 1984 | Feb. 14, 1984 | Another ongoing title follows the hero's return. |
| Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man #90 | May 1984 | Feb. 14, 1984 | A parallel installment of the return, with a brief appearance by Peter. |
| Marvel Super-Heroes Secret Wars #8, direct edition | December 1984 | Aug. 7, 1984 | Shows Peter acquiring the costume on Battleworld. |
| Marvel Super-Heroes Secret Wars #8, newsstand edition | December 1984 | Aug. 28, 1984 | The same story, with a later recorded distribution date. |
So it is accurate to say that #252, #141, and #90 all carry May 1984 cover dates, but misleading to call them simultaneous releases. Issue #252 went on sale about two weeks earlier. Likewise, the December 1984 date on Secret Wars #8 is not its retail release date: the historical records show August and distinguish distribution channels. All dates in this table refer to the original US editions, not later editions in other countries.
What happens first in the story itself?
Spoiler warning: the following section explains how Spider-Man obtains the suit and returns from Battleworld.
In story order, the heroes vanish from Earth, and Secret Wars follows their battles on Battleworld. In issue #8, while looking for a way to repair his damaged outfit, Peter approaches what he believes is a costume-producing machine. A small black mass spreads over his body and becomes a black-and-white suit.
Later in the fictional timeline, the Secret Wars conclude and Peter returns to Earth still wearing it. That is where The Amazing Spider-Man #252, titled Homecoming, picks up his story. Readers saw the new appearance and some of its abilities before the ongoing crossover actually showed the suit's acquisition. Later stories established that the costume was a living alien organism rather than ordinary fabric.
Why did Marvel show the outcome before the origin?
The crossover's publication structure provides the answer. In a 2019 SYFY WIRE oral history, Jim Shooter described a coordinated plan: characters would disappear from their regular titles and return changed soon afterward. Their ongoing books would continue on schedule while the 12-part miniseries gradually filled in the adventure that had taken place away from Earth.
According to the creators interviewed for that report, Spider-Man's new look was one of those planned changes. Tom DeFalco, who was involved with both the event and Spider-Man's book, and artist Ron Frenz also recalled some readers' initial backlash and the need to coordinate the costume's progress across the titles. These accounts support a deliberate editorial structure, not the idea that Secret Wars #8 was written merely to fix an accidental error in #252.
One distinction matters especially for collectors: #252 is the earliest published debut in this group, while Secret Wars #8 depicts the in-story origin. Neither should be confused with Eddie Brock's later full debut as Venom.
Reprints account for some conflicting dates
Marvel's current catalog also lists facsimiles. Its reprint of Amazing Spider-Man #252 is dated April 17, 2019; the facsimile of Secret Wars #8 is dated August 14, 2024. Neither is the original 1984 issue. Even Marvel's original #252 listing gives May 1, 1984, reflecting its May issue dating, while historical on-sale records identify January 31. A useful timeline must establish which edition and which kind of date each source is describing.
In short, readers saw the result in January 1984 and could read the origin scene beginning in August. To follow the fictional sequence instead, read the events of Secret Wars before Amazing Spider-Man #252.
