Secret Wars: who created Battleworld in 1984 and who ruled it in 2015?

The Beyonder created 1984 Battleworld as a battle arena. In 2015, Doctor Doom assembled remnants of the Multiverse and ruled the planet as God Emperor. Here is how their origins and powers differ.

Spoiler warning: this explanation reveals how Battleworld was created and what happened to it in the 1984 and 2015 comic stories.

In Secret Wars (1984), the Beyonder creates Battleworld by assembling fragments of other worlds into an arena where heroes and villains must fight. In Secret Wars (2015), Doctor Doom creates and rules a different version of that planet with power taken from the Beyonders after the Multiverse collapses. The two settings share a name, but they are not one planet that simply changed rulers.

1984: an arena built by the Beyonder

In Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars, a 12-issue miniseries written by Jim Shooter with Mike Zeck among its principal artists, the Beyonder transports the Avengers, the X-Men, Spider-Man, and numerous villains to a setting assembled from pieces of other worlds. The premise is an experiment in conflict and desire: the opposing groups are promised the fulfillment of their wishes if they defeat their enemies.

Doctor Doom is among those summoned. He rallies some of the villains and tries to reach the power behind the contest, but he did not create the original planet. During the story, he briefly steals the Beyonder's power. That changes the balance of the confrontation without changing Battleworld's origins. Ultimately, the Beyonder takes back his power and the survivors return to Earth, with the Thing, Ben Grimm, remaining behind for a time.

2015: the incursions and Doom's reconstruction

Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribić's event begins with a very different crisis. Incursions cause parallel realities to collide and disappear. The final collision involves Earth-616 and Earth-1610, the Ultimate Universe. The catastrophe ends the existing Multiverse, leaving fragments from which another Battleworld can be assembled.

An important distinction is the Beyonder in the 1984 adventure versus the Beyonders, a group of cosmic entities involved in the multiversal destruction plan. Doctor Doom and Owen Reece, Molecule Man, act against that plan. Doom takes the Beyonders' power and, with Molecule Man playing an essential role in sustaining it, uses that power to combine pieces of destroyed realities. The result is 2015's patchwork Battleworld.

This is not the original tournament starting over. The new Battleworld consists of what remains of many universes, turned into a society controlled by the self-styled God Emperor Doom.

Who rules Battleworld in 2015?

Doom holds supreme authority, while individual domains have rulers who answer to him. The Thor Corps acts as a policing force, and Doctor Strange serves as sheriff. Behind Doom's image of unlimited power, Molecule Man remains essential to the energy sustaining this reality.

That political structure makes the contrast clear. In 1984, a cosmic being builds an arena for a forced contest, and Doom attempts to seize the organizer's power. In 2015, Doom sets the rules himself, governs the territory, and presents his authority as the foundation of the world.

Where should you start reading?

For the original storyline, begin with all 12 issues of Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars (1984). To understand why the 2015 version exists, the most useful setup is the incursions storyline in New Avengers (2013) and the accompanying Avengers run, followed by the nine issues of Secret Wars (2015). Tie-in miniseries set across its domains expand the world without replacing the main story.

The 2015 ending reinforces the distinction: once Doom loses his source of power to Reed Richards, his rule over Battleworld ends, while Reed and Molecule Man help restore the Multiverse. This is not merely another handover of the 1984 planet. These are two Battleworlds, built through different mechanisms at different points in Marvel Comics continuity.
