Mononoke: why are Ri, Kon and Ken different Medicine Sellers?

The 2007 TV series follows Ri, the films center on Kon, and the 2026 project introduced Ken. Here is how their swords, continuity and confirmed appearances differ.

In Mononoke, the Medicine Seller from the television series and the protagonist of the films are not the same individual with an updated design or voice actor. The TV character carries the Ri (離) sword; the film trilogy follows Kon (坤). A third seller, Ken (乾), was introduced in an official video on July 5, 2026. All three confront mononoke, but they are distinct figures within the franchise's mythology.

Director Kenji Nakamura explained the distinction during the films' production: the setting allows for 64 exorcism swords, and the number of Medicine Sellers who can exist at the same time depends on the threat. Eight swords form a special group known as Onmyō Hakke, linked to the eight trigrams. Ri, Kon and Ken identify the bearers of special swords, rather than three versions of a single protagonist.

Ri, Kon and Ken: who is who?

Minor spoiler warning: the comparison below identifies a character who takes part in the third film, Mononoke: Chapter Three - Hebigami (2026). It does not describe the final battle or ending.

Seller and swordWhere they appearWhat is established
Ri (離)The Mononoke TV series (2007); also features in the third film (2026).The Medicine Seller associated with the original series. The official character profile for the third film describes Ri as an experienced bearer of one of the eight special swords.
Kon (坤)The film trilogy beginning with Karakasa (2024), followed by Hinezumi (2025) and Hebigami (2026).The films' protagonist, voiced in Japanese by Hiroshi Kamiya. The director describes Kon as more inclined to take the initiative and put himself at risk to help others.
Ken (乾)Introduced in the new project's video released in July 2026.Ken's appearance, sword and voice actor, Hiroki Arai, have been announced. The video is not the same as a complete story starring the character being released.

Why do the TV series and films have different protagonists?

The difference is built into the fictional setting. Speaking to MANTANWEB in July 2024, Nakamura said that the idea of 64 swords had existed since 2006, although the TV series had not openly explored it. To explain the change to actor Hiroshi Kamiya, he compared the sellers to different heroes within a shared lineage, like the many Kamen Riders.

That resolves two common misconceptions. First, a change in voice or character design does not by itself explain identity: Ri and Kon were conceived as different individuals. Second, 64 is a possible upper limit under the rules described by the director, not a roster of 64 protagonists already shown on screen.

Their attitudes differ as well. According to Nakamura and Kamiya, Kon is more proactive about helping people in distress. This fits the trilogy's setting in the Ōoku, an area of the court he actively tries to enter. Their contrasting personalities do not mean that Ri and Kon operate under entirely separate supernatural rules.

Different swords, the same basic exorcism rule

The official website explains that an exorcism sword cannot be drawn until the seller uncovers three aspects of the supernatural event: Form (Kata, 形), Truth (Makoto, 真) and Reason (Kotowari, 理). The kanji 理 for the third condition should not be confused with 離, the character identifying Ri.

Another important distinction is the transformation known as Shingi: the seller takes on a combat form after releasing the sword. The change in appearance during that transformation does not, by itself, mean a new Medicine Seller has appeared. The most reliable way to distinguish Ri, Kon and Ken is by the bearer and named sword in official materials.

What did the 2026 announcement reveal about Ken?

In its July 5 announcement, Twin Engine introduced Ken as the third Medicine Seller publicly highlighted by the new project. The character was designed by Koko Nagata, who also worked on the films' designs, and is voiced by Hiroki Arai, who had previously played Medicine Sellers on stage. Nakamura described Ken as relaxed and talkative before a supernatural disturbance, then sharp and decisive once action is required. The sword features a vulture-inspired design, which the director connected to exceptional insight.

The announcement also confirmed three original novels, one starring each seller, for the Kadokawa Bunko imprint. The original announcement gave no publication dates. It also does not establish that Ken has already starred in a new TV season or a fourth film: an introductory video and a book announcement should not be mistaken for an audiovisual release.

Do all three belong to the same continuity?

The 2026 promotional material presents Ri, Kon and Ken within the same system of Medicine Sellers and swords. Official publicity confirms that Ri and Kon appear in the same film, the trilogy's third chapter, ruling out the idea that they are simply unrelated reinterpretations. Ken's precise relationship with the others, however, cannot be invented from an introductory video.

For the clearest view of how the idea developed, start with the 2007 TV series, continue through the three films released in Japan in 2024, 2025 and 2026, and then look at the July 2026 announcement. That is an order of releases and announcements, not a proven in-universe timeline for every seller.
