Wang Miao is the nanomaterials researcher played by Zhang Luyi (Edward Zhang) who anchors much of the scientific investigation in Three-Body, the 2023 Chinese television series. In Netflix’s 3 Body Problem, released in 2024, he does not appear as an individual lead with the same name and story arc. Instead, the mystery follows a group of scientist friends, the Oxford Five. Auggie Salazar and Jin Cheng take on the functions most directly comparable to his.
The main distinction is who encounters each clue, not simply the shows’ different episode counts. The comparison below identifies narrative functions supported by official descriptions and production material, rather than claiming the creators sanctioned a one-to-one character replacement chart.
Scope: the premises and early developments of the 2023 and 2024 series, without revealing their endings.
Who is Wang Miao in the Chinese adaptation?
According to WeTV’s official description, Three-Body opens in 2007 as inexplicable scientific results and the deaths of researchers unsettle the academic world. Wang Miao, a nanomaterials specialist, is recruited by police investigator Shi Qiang to help examine a group connected to an organization known as the Frontiers of Science.
This premise places Wang Miao at the intersection of laboratory research, a police investigation and the mysterious Three-Body game. He provides a central viewpoint as the scientific clues point to a much wider mystery. The Chinese series was directed by Yang Lei and has 30 episodes; Yu Hewei plays Shi Qiang. Its platform listing should not be taken as evidence that every episode is available in every country.
Who takes on Wang Miao’s functions in Netflix’s series?
The series by David Benioff, D. B. Weiss and Alexander Woo brings together Auggie, Jin, Saul, Jack and Will, former students of professor Vera Ye. Rather than give one scientist the nanotechnology research, the countdown and the route through the game, it organizes these story threads around characters with personal ties to one another.
The table describes each thread’s role at the beginning of the mystery. Shared functions are dramatic parallels, not proof that two characters from separate adaptations are canonically the same person.
| Role in the mystery | Three-Body (2023), Tencent | 3 Body Problem (2024), Netflix | What can be concluded |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nanotechnology | Wang Miao, a nanomaterials researcher. | Auggie Salazar, a nanofiber specialist. | A close professional and technological parallel. |
| Countdown | The phenomenon is tied to Wang Miao’s investigation. | Auggie sees numbers in her field of vision. | A similar clue, not an identical character. |
| The Three-Body game | Wang Miao is the main route into the game’s mystery. | Jin Cheng explores the game, joined by Jack Rooney. | The virtual investigation no longer depends on one lead. |
| Scientific anomalies | Wang Miao probes the scientific crisis with other researchers. | Jin examines physics data; Saul works in laboratory research. | The scientific thread is spread across the group. |
| Police investigation | Shi Qiang recruits Wang Miao and pursues the clues. | Clarence Shi (Da Shi) investigates deaths and reports to Thomas Wade. | The detective role remains, with changed relationships. |
| Past and present | Ye Wenjie connects earlier history to the mystery. | Ye Wenjie still links the two timelines. | The character remains, not necessarily with identical scenes. |
Is Auggie Netflix’s Wang Miao?
Partly. Auggie, played by Eiza González, is a nanotechnology pioneer who begins seeing a disturbing countdown. Wang Miao is also associated with nanomaterials research and the countdown mystery in the Chinese story. This is the easiest parallel to spot, but it does not cover his entire investigative role.
The search for answers within the game is assigned chiefly to Jin Cheng (Jess Hong), a theoretical physicist who receives the virtual-reality device; Jack Rooney (John Bradley) also joins this thread. Saul Durand (Jovan Adepo) works in physics research amid baffling accelerator results, while Will Downing (Alex Sharp), a physics teacher, deepens the group’s human dimension. It would be misleading to describe Saul, Jack or Will as individual copies of Wang Miao.
What happens to Shi Qiang and Ye Wenjie?
Not every central element is redistributed in the same way. In the Chinese show, Shi Qiang works alongside Wang Miao during the investigation. Netflix introduces the investigator played by Benedict Wong as Clarence Shi, also known as Da Shi; he operates under Thomas Wade, played by Liam Cunningham. The detective function survives, but the surrounding relationships change.
Ye Wenjie remains important in both adaptations as the connection between China’s past and the scientific mystery in the present. Netflix casts Zine Tseng and Rosalind Chao as her younger and older selves. This does not establish that every scene, relationship or revelation involving her occurs in the same way in the Chinese version.
Why did Netflix create the Oxford Five?
Netflix’s Tudum quotes Alexander Woo explaining that the protagonists of Cixin Liu’s book trilogy had little contact with one another, so the writers created the Oxford Five to maintain an ongoing circle of friendship on television. Official material also describes chronological changes, expanded and added characters, and a contemporary setting centered largely on the United Kingdom.
Tencent’s synopsis instead foregrounds Wang Miao, Shi Qiang and an investigation set in China. Netflix’s first season has eight episodes and combines the opening mystery with threads that point toward later parts of the trilogy, as reported by Superinteressante. That helps explain why neither every character nor every stage of the plot has an exact counterpart.
How should viewers compare the two versions?
For the Chinese series, the useful question is how Wang Miao collects scientific clues and moves the investigation forward with Shi Qiang. For the Netflix series, pay attention to who carries each strand: Auggie faces the countdown and the technological problem; Jin explores the game; Saul, Jack and Will add distinct paths within the group; Clarence Shi handles the intelligence investigation.
So “Auggie replaces Wang Miao” is only accurate with a qualification: Auggie takes on some of his functions, while others are redistributed. Both adaptations draw on Cixin Liu’s work, but choose different focal characters, locations and structures. WeTV’s episode listing does not guarantee worldwide streaming availability.
