Star Wars: Peridea or Dathomir? The Nightsisters’ Origins Explained

Peridea is the ancestral world of the Dathmiri; Dathomir is the Nightsisters’ familiar homeworld. Canon distinguishes them without detailing their full migration.

Peridea is the ancestral home of the Dathmiri, forebears of the Nightsisters, while Dathomir is the planet where the order became established and is best known. They are two distinct worlds in Star Wars canon: Peridea lies in another galaxy, whereas Dathomir is home to the witches' tradition seen in The Clone Wars and revisited in Ahsoka. Official sources establish this ancestral connection, but do not spell out when or how any migration between the planets took place.

Notice: mild spoilers for Ahsoka Season 1 (2023).

Why is Peridea considered the ancestral world?

The official Star Wars Databank describes Peridea as an ancient world in a distant galaxy and the home of the Dathomirian ancestors. Its entry for the far galaxy is more specific still: it identifies Peridea as the ancestral homeworld of the Nightsisters' forebears, called the Dathmiri. That wording provides the documentary basis for calling Peridea an ancestral origin.

There is an important distinction in what that means. Ancestors living on Peridea do not, by themselves, prove that the Nightsister order already had the same organization, rituals, or political structure later seen on Dathomir. The official material establishes ancestry, not a complete account of how the order was founded.

In Ahsoka, Peridea is shown as a landscape of ruins and ancient remains. It also contains the Great Mothers' fortress, another link to the witches' tradition that does not make the two planets one and the same.

Why is Dathomir still the Nightsisters' homeworld?

The same Databank describes Dathomir as the planet of the Nightsisters' stone fortresses, surrounded by forests, mountains, and swamps. There, the matriarchal order ruled local society, practiced Force-related magick, and lived alongside the Nightbrothers, who resided apart from the witches. This is the society that Star Wars: The Clone Wars explored most directly.

During the Clone Wars, Dathomir's story includes Mother Talzin's leadership, conflicts involving Asajj Ventress, and an attack by General Grievous's forces. Those events belong to the known history of the clan on Dathomir. The revelation of more distant ancestral roots does not retroactively relocate them to Peridea.

There is also a particularly clear individual example: Morgan Elsbeth's official profile says she was born a Nightsister on Dathomir. An ancestral connection to Peridea therefore does not prevent later generations and characters from calling Dathomir their birthplace.

What do the Great Mothers reveal about the connection?

On Peridea, Ahsoka introduces Klothow, Lakesis, and Aktropaw, the three Great Mothers. The Databank identifies them as Dathmiri witches and describes their fortress as the place where ancient Nightsister ancestors use their magick. This links a distant lineage to the tradition seen on Dathomir; it is more than a visual resemblance.

Morgan Elsbeth provides another part of the connection. Her official profile says the Great Mothers communicate with her across vast distances and summon her to Peridea. The fortress entry mentions visions and dreams. These accounts support a spiritual and cultural bond between the witches, but they do not provide a complete family tree or explain the historical formation of every clan.

Do the purrgil prove how the witches reached Dathomir?

No. Peridea's official entry says fragmentary Jedi archives describe the planet as the endpoint of a migration route followed by purrgil, creatures able to travel across the space between galaxies. The text explicitly concerns the purrgil's route. It does not say that Nightsister ancestors rode them, nor does it provide dates, vessels, or stages of a journey from Peridea to Dathomir.

Connecting the creatures' route to a possible journey by the witches remains a hypothesis, not an explanation confirmed by the Databank. The reliable distinction is therefore both historical and geographical: Peridea is the ancestral world associated with the Dathmiri; Dathomir is the home of the Nightsister order documented in the better-known stories. The precise path between those two stages still lacks a complete official timeline in the sources consulted.
