Spoiler warning: this article reveals the ending of Star Wars Rebels and major events from Ahsoka Season 1.
Thrawn did not die or simply vanish after Star Wars Rebels. With help from the purrgil, Ezra Bridger carried him and the Imperial Star Destroyer Chimaera into another galaxy. Both ended up stranded on Peridea, but their paths diverged: Thrawn worked to restore his ship and gained the support of the Great Mothers, while Ezra lived among the Noti. The first season of Ahsoka explains how Morgan Elsbeth's operation eventually brought the admiral back to his home galaxy.
The timeline: from Lothal to Peridea and back
- Rebels Season 4 finale: as Lothal is being liberated, Ezra surrenders to Thrawn and boards the Chimaera. A pod of purrgil breaks through the Imperial blockade and carries the ship, Ezra, and the admiral away in a hyperspace jump. Their destination remains unknown to those left behind.
- Exile in another galaxy: the official Databank identifies Peridea, a world connected to the ancestors of the Nightsisters and to purrgil migration routes, as the destination of Ezra and Thrawn. This is not a planet near Lothal.
- The unseen years: Thrawn finds the Great Mothers' fortress and awakens the witches dwelling there. With Enoch and his Night Troopers, he works to rebuild the Chimaera. Ezra, meanwhile, makes a home with the Noti, Peridea's nomadic inhabitants.
- A rescue takes shape: after the Empire falls, Morgan Elsbeth remains loyal to Thrawn. She retrieves a map containing coordinates to another galaxy and prepares the Eye of Sion, a vast hyperspace ring capable of making the required journey.
- Ahsoka Episode 6, Part Six: Far, Far Away: Morgan reaches Peridea and reunites with Thrawn. Sabine Wren finds Ezra among the Noti. Ahsoka later reaches the planet as well, following the purrgil.
- Ahsoka Episode 8, Part Eight: The Jedi, the Witch, and the Warlord: Thrawn departs with the Great Mothers, his troops, and the Chimaera attached to the Eye of Sion. Ezra manages to return by hiding aboard and reunites with Hera Syndulla; Ahsoka and Sabine remain on Peridea. The admiral reaches Dathomir.
What did Thrawn actually do during his exile?
The documented answer is narrower than the notion that he spent the entire period commanding a secret fleet. The Star Wars Databank confirms that Thrawn discovered the Great Mothers' fortress, allied with its inhabitants, and worked with Enoch and the Night Troopers to rebuild the Chimaera. The witches also helped him survive on Peridea. Those are the established elements of his preparations to escape.
The official sources consulted do not provide a continuous account of his exile. They do not establish the exact order of every repair, the length of each stage, or a complete record of encounters between Thrawn and Ezra during those years. Filling in those blanks with specific battles, journeys, or schemes would turn speculation into canon.
Why do Peridea and the Eye of Sion matter?
Peridea is in another galaxy, at the end of an ancient purrgil migration route. This connects the jump Ezra set in motion in Rebels with the difficulty of getting home. Thrawn's destination was not part of a conventional Imperial retreat. Morgan's recovered coordinates and the hyperspace ring known as the Eye of Sion provide the way out that Thrawn lacked when he vanished.
Morgan operates outside Peridea and keeps ties to the Nightsisters' legacy; the Great Mothers provide help at the other end of the journey. Once the Eye of Sion arrives, it attaches to the Chimaera. The operation brings the ship, its remaining personnel, and the Dathomirian allies together, making Thrawn's return a tangible threat to the New Republic rather than a rumor about his whereabouts.
Where was Ezra while Thrawn waited?
Disappearing together did not make them companions or allies. The Databank describes Ezra living among the Noti, separate from Thrawn's command. Sabine finds him during the search in Ahsoka. In the finale, he secretly boards the enemy ship and gets home, while Ahsoka and Sabine are left in the other galaxy. The same rescue mission produces two very different outcomes.
Rebels, Ahsoka, and the Legends books are not one timeline
The official chronological viewing order places Rebels before the original film trilogy and Ahsoka after Return of the Jedi, during the New Republic era. Years pass within the story; these shows are not set immediately back-to-back. The disappearance at Lothal and the return through Peridea belong to the present-day canon.
Thrawn first appeared in Timothy Zahn's 1991 novel Heir to the Empire, a story subsequently classified as Star Wars Legends. Although the character also exists in current canon, events from those older novels cannot automatically explain what he did on Peridea. Two editorial versions of a character do not create a single shared biography.
What does Ahsoka Season 1 actually resolve?
It establishes where Thrawn was, how he survived, and how he returned. It also makes the cost of that escape clear: Ezra reaches his home galaxy, but Ahsoka and Sabine remain behind. Thrawn's arrival on Dathomir closes the exile storyline shown by the end of Season 1, without supplying a complete account of every missing year or confirming how he will use his forces afterward.
