Spoiler warning: the following text reveals the full story and ending of X-Men (2000). It covers the first film only and does not include events from X2 (2003).
X-Men (2000) follows Wolverine and Rogue as they arrive at Professor Charles Xavier's school and become involved in Magneto's attempt to turn human world leaders into mutants. Magneto wants to prevent further persecution of his people, but chooses to use Rogue as the power source for a machine that puts thousands of lives at risk. The story culminates in a rescue mission at the Statue of Liberty in New York.
The first film in the X-Men theatrical series, directed by Bryan Singer, is built around a conflict that goes beyond its fights. Xavier believes humans and mutants can coexist, while Magneto expects persecution to return and intends to alter the balance of power by force. Wolverine and Rogue enter that struggle while searching, above all, for safety and answers about their identities.
Magneto's past and the fear of mutants
The movie opens in 1944, in Nazi-occupied Poland. Young Erik Lehnsherr is separated from his parents at a concentration camp and, in desperation, bends a metal gate with a power he does not yet understand. The experience helps explain his fear that people regarded as different will be persecuted again, but it does not make his later methods any less dangerous.
Years later, US Senator Robert Kelly advocates compulsory registration for mutants. Jean Grey speaks against the proposal, and Charles Xavier worries about the reaction of his former friend Erik, now known as Magneto. Both men recognize the prejudice mutants face but disagree about what to do. Xavier wants to protect them and build trust; Magneto believes humans will stop controlling mutants only when their political advantage has been taken away.
How Rogue meets Wolverine and reaches Xavier's school
Marie, a teenager who later calls herself Rogue, discovers her ability when she kisses her boyfriend and leaves him in a coma. Her touch drains other people's life force and, when she touches another mutant, can temporarily absorb that mutant's abilities. Frightened and unable to lead a normal life at home, she flees to Canada.
There she meets Logan, also known as Wolverine, who earns money through cage fights at a bar. He has metal claws, heightened senses and a healing factor, but remembers little about his past. Although initially unwilling to have company, he eventually lets her travel with him. On the road, they are ambushed by Sabretooth, one of Magneto's associates. Storm and Cyclops rescue them and take them to Xavier's school in Westchester.
The mansion is both a refuge and a place where young mutants learn to use their abilities. Rogue meets other students, including Bobby Drake, and starts to imagine a less isolated life. Logan is uneasy there and distrusts the team. Xavier initially believes Magneto is trying to capture him and asks him to stay while he investigates the attack. That interpretation turns out to be wrong.
The experiment on Senator Kelly exposes the machine's danger
While Xavier welcomes the newcomers, Mystique and Toad abduct Senator Kelly. Magneto uses him as a test subject for a machine powered by his magnetic abilities that artificially induces mutation in ordinary humans. Kelly acquires an abnormal ability and manages to escape, but the transformation is unstable.
Kelly seeks help at Xavier's school, where the heroes learn what happened. His body eventually breaks down into liquid, proving that the device does not safely transform people. The test also takes an enormous physical toll on Magneto. To repeat it on a much larger scale without paying that price himself, he needs somebody who can absorb his power. That person is Rogue.
Why Rogue runs away again and how Magneto captures her
Before she leaves, Logan has a nightmare tied to his fragmented memories. Rogue wakes him, and he reacts instinctively, accidentally stabbing her with his claws. She survives by touching him and absorbing his healing factor. The incident demonstrates the danger of their powers and makes remaining at the school emotionally harder for her.
Mystique exploits the situation. Disguised as Bobby, she convinces Rogue that Xavier is angry with her and that she should leave. Mystique also sabotages Cerebro, the device that amplifies Xavier's telepathy. Logan follows Rogue to a train and persuades her to return, but Magneto attacks the station, incapacitates Wolverine and abducts the girl. It becomes clear that the earlier roadside attack was intended to capture Rogue, not Logan.
During a confrontation with the police, Xavier tries to restrain Magneto through telepathy, but Magneto threatens the officers and forces Xavier to release his control of Sabretooth. The Brotherhood escapes. Xavier's responsibility now goes beyond offering shelter: he must find Rogue before Magneto can use her.
Magneto's plan for the summit of world leaders
The X-Men connect Kelly's experiment with Rogue's kidnapping. Magneto intends to transfer his magnetic abilities to the girl temporarily and force her to power the machine in his place. His target is a summit of world leaders on Ellis Island, near the Statue of Liberty. By turning the people who shape laws and governments into mutants, he hopes to compel them to defend the population they currently discriminate against.
His plan ignores the evidence that artificially induced mutations are fatally unstable and accepts that Rogue will probably die. Xavier attempts to locate her with Cerebro, but Mystique's sabotage puts him in a coma. Jean Grey repairs the device and identifies the enemy operation's location. Cyclops, Storm, Jean and Wolverine set out to prevent the machine from being activated.
Ending explained: the battle at the Statue of Liberty
At the Statue of Liberty, the X-Men face Toad, Mystique and Sabretooth. The fights delay the rescue, and Magneto manages to restrain the team. He forces Rogue to absorb his powers and operate the machine mounted on the monument. The effort threatens to kill her as the wave intended for the human leaders begins to spread.
Wolverine breaks free and rejoins the fight. With help from his teammates, Sabretooth is defeated. Jean and Storm help Logan reach the upper part of the machine. Magneto tries to stop him by controlling the metal in his claws, but Cyclops hits Magneto with an optic blast. Logan then destroys the machine before its effect can reach the leaders gathered on Ellis Island.
Rogue is close to death. Logan touches her and allows her to absorb his healing factor once more, saving her while leaving himself temporarily unconscious. The white streak that appears in her hair accompanies the traumatic transfer of powers. The immediate threat is over: Magneto fails, the summit is spared the mass mutation, and Rogue survives.
What happens to Wolverine, Xavier and Magneto afterward?
Xavier and Wolverine recover. The X-Men learn that Mystique did not die in the confrontation: she reappears posing as Senator Kelly, whose death is being concealed from the public. Xavier gives Logan a lead about his origins, directing him to an old military installation near Alkali Lake in Canada. The film closes that storyline by providing a direction for the search, not by revealing Wolverine's entire history.
Magneto is held in a prison built without metal, limiting his ability to use his powers. Xavier visits him and they play chess. The prisoner makes clear that he has not abandoned his convictions; the professor responds that he will continue to oppose him. The meeting brings the story back to its opening disagreement: one battle has been won, but the tension between protection, fear and radicalization remains.
The decisions by Xavier and Magneto that drive the story
| Turning point | Xavier's decision | Magneto's decision | Consequence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Registration debate | Argues for protection and coexistence. | Treats persecution as an imminent threat. | Politics sets the two groups on opposing paths. |
| Logan and Rogue arrive | Offers shelter and investigates the attack. | Seeks to capture Rogue for his project. | The girl becomes central to the conflict. |
| Abduction and machine | Organizes a search and rescue. | Chooses to use Rogue's power and risk her life. | The conflict moves to the Statue of Liberty. |
| After the battle | Helps Logan and maintains his opposition. | Remains imprisoned but refuses to abandon his ideology. | The immediate threat ends; the disagreement survives. |
Wolverine's role is to protect Rogue as the two strangers begin to trust each other. Her story, meanwhile, exposes the human cost of decisions supposedly made on behalf of mutants. Seeing Xavier and Magneto as offering different responses to prejudice is an interpretation of the film's structure, not a justification for Magneto's violence.
