Batman: White Knight reading order: Harley Quinn, Red Hood and Generation Joker

Follow the Batman: White Knight reading order, learn where Harley Quinn, Red Hood and Generation Joker fit, and see which extras are already collected.

The most practical reading order for Batman: White Knight is to start with White Knight, continue with Curse of the White Knight, add Harley Quinn, move through Beyond the White Knight with Red Hood between issues #4 and #5, and finish with Generation Joker. The Von Freeze special is supplementary and already appears in collected editions of Curse. This is a recommended reading sequence, not an attempt to arrange every scene in internal chronological order.

This is an alternate continuity created by Sean Murphy, often called the Murphyverse, outside the main Batman comic-book continuity. Its miniseries form a self-contained line: readers do not need to follow DC's regular monthly Batman titles before starting.

Reading order by individual issues

  1. Batman: White Knight #1-8 (2017-2018). The starting point, establishing the reversal between Batman and the Joker, now known as Jack Napier.
  2. Batman: Curse of the White Knight #1-8 (2019-2020). The direct sequel, involving the Wayne family history and a conflict with Azrael. The 2019 one-shot Batman: White Knight Presents Von Freeze #1 can be read here as additional background.
  3. Batman: White Knight Presents: Harley Quinn #1-6 (2020-2021). A spin-off set after Curse that focuses on Harley, her family, and an investigation into new crimes in Gotham.
  4. Batman: Beyond the White Knight #1-4 (2022). The beginning of the next major arc, which moves this universe into a future Gotham and revisits Batman's legacy.
  5. Batman: White Knight Presents: Red Hood #1-2 (2022). Two Jason Todd issues published between Beyond #4 and #5. This is a convenient interlude before the main story reaches its conclusion.
  6. Batman: Beyond the White Knight #5-8 (2022-2023). Resume and complete the main arc.
  7. Batman: White Knight Presents: Generation Joker #1-6 (2023). A post-Beyond spin-off starring Jackie and Bryce, the children of Harley Quinn and Jack Napier.

Note: the following paragraphs mention characters' starting circumstances after Curse and Beyond, without detailing those stories' endings.

Where do Harley Quinn, Red Hood, and Generation Joker fit?

Harley Quinn links Curse to the next stage. According to DC's official synopsis, it begins two years after the events of Curse of the White Knight. It shifts attention to Harley's life as the mother of Jack Napier's twins and to a criminal investigation. It develops the characters and consequences but does not replace the eight issues of Curse.

Red Hood is not a single-issue special: this miniseries has two issues. Its story looks back at Jason Todd's post-Robin years and introduces his connection with Gan, while the larger framing links it to the conflicts in Beyond. Its issues were released after Beyond #4 and before #5. This is a publication-based placement, not a claim that every memory in Jason's story happens at that point in the fictional timeline.

Generation Joker comes last. DC explicitly presents it as spinning out of Beyond the White Knight. It follows the twins Jackie and Bryce and a holographic record of Jack Napier. Starting here would reveal elements best discovered in the earlier books, which is why the recommended place is after Beyond concludes.

Specials and collections: what is already included?

Book or editionContents confirmed by DCPractical choice
Batman: White KnightIssues #1-8.Essential; the complete opening story.
Batman: Curse of the White KnightCurse #1-8 and Von Freeze #1.Essential main arc; do not buy Von Freeze again if it is listed in your edition.
Batman: White Knight Presents: Harley QuinnIssues #1-6 plus a story from Harley Quinn Black + White + Red, digital chapter 6.Recommended spin-off; the added chapter is not a seventh issue of the miniseries.
Batman: Beyond the White KnightBeyond #1-8 plus both issues of Red Hood.Essential sequel; this collected edition removes the need to purchase Red Hood separately.
Batman: White Knight Presents: Generation JokerIssues #1-6.Read this spin-off after Beyond.
Harley Quinn and Generation Joker: The Deluxe Edition (2025)Both complete six-issue miniseries.Combines two books in one volume but does not change where each story fits in the reading order.

The Von Freeze special tells a story set long before the central adventures, connected to the Fries and Wayne families. That earlier setting does not make it the best entry point. When buying collected editions, check the table of contents, as formats and reprints may differ.

Publication order is not internal chronology

The distinction is especially clear with Red Hood. Beyond #4 reached US comic shops on June 28, 2022; Red Hood #1 and #2 were released in August; Beyond #5 followed on September 27. This sequence supports inserting the spin-off between the two main-series chapters. It does not mean every scene in the spin-off occurs after issue #4's events.

The same principle applies to Von Freeze: since it is a story about the past, it could appear near the beginning of a strictly chronological list, but its background works better alongside Curse. Generation Joker, meanwhile, relies on circumstances established after Beyond. Combining these different systems without explanation creates contradictory reading lists.

What is the shortest route for new readers?

To follow only this universe's major Batman arcs, read White Knight, Curse of the White Knight, and Beyond the White Knight, in that order. For the expanded route, add Harley Quinn before Beyond, read the two Red Hood issues during Beyond, and leave Generation Joker until last. Von Freeze and the extra Black + White + Red chapter enrich the background, but require no separate purchase if they are already included in the collection you own.
