Control: Is AWE Required Before Alan Wake 2, and When Does It Unlock?

AWE is optional before Alan Wake 2. Learn when the Control expansion unlocks, how to reach it, and why two 505 Games support answers conflict.

You do not have to play Control’s AWE expansion before Alan Wake 2. Alan Wake 2’s official FAQ explicitly describes Control and AWE as optional, though recommended for players interested in the wider Remedy universe. To unlock AWE within Control, 505 Games’ dedicated instructions say to finish main story mission 7, The Face of the Enemy. A different support article contradicts that requirement, so the distinction matters.

Is AWE required to understand Alan Wake 2?

The official answer is no. Alan Wake 2 was designed to welcome players who have not experienced the earlier games. Those who have played Alan Wake and Control can recognize more references, organizations and consequences; newcomers do not need to complete a checklist of games to follow the sequel’s main story.

The key difference is between shared continuity and a narrative prerequisite. Control and Alan Wake belong to an interconnected world, and AWE makes that relationship explicit. This gives the expansion value as extra context without turning it into a mandatory chapter before starting Alan Wake 2.

Exactly when does AWE become available in Control?

In its article specifically about accessing the expansion, 505 Games gives a clear trigger: finish the seventh main story mission, The Face of the Enemy. A new mission will then direct players to the Sector Elevator in the Executive Sector of the Oldest House. This requirement concerns progress in Control’s campaign, not completing Alan Wake.

  1. Check the content entitlement: use an edition that includes AWE or have the expansion purchased and installed for your platform. Ultimate Edition includes the expansions, while separate add-on access depends on the edition and license.
  2. Advance Control’s main story: complete mission 7, The Face of the Enemy. Do not confuse it with a seventh mission from another game.
  3. Follow the new mission: check your active missions and proceed toward the Sector Elevator in the Executive Sector. This leads toward the expansion area.

The dedicated guides do not list completing The Foundation as an AWE requirement. These are separate expansions: the same 505 Games support site connects The Foundation to finishing the main campaign, but ties AWE to mission 7. Having access does not mean you must start the DLC immediately.

Why does an official support page say AWE requires finishing the game?

505 Games’ own documentation is inconsistent. A general troubleshooting article about missing Ultimate Edition DLC says, in parentheses, that chapter 7 unlocks The Foundation and completing the game unlocks AWE. That reverses the requirements given in two more targeted help articles: one about entering AWE and another about Season Pass installation on PS4. Both specify mission 7 for AWE, while the PS4 guide places The Foundation after the campaign.

Those pages do not explain the discrepancy. Because the mission-7 instruction directly addresses AWE access and is supported by another dedicated article, it is the more consistent practical guidance. Claiming that all of Control must be finished would conceal a genuine conflict in the publisher’s documentation.

What does AWE add to the connection between Control and Alan Wake?

Released on August 27, 2020, AWE takes Jesse Faden into the Investigations Sector of the Oldest House, an area connected to so-called Altered World Events. In its launch explanation, 505 Games says the Federal Bureau of Control also investigates incidents involving Bright Falls, the town associated with Alan Wake. Light and darkness, key elements of that story, help establish the connection.

This supplies an institutional perspective on events already associated with Alan Wake: players see how the Bureau classifies and investigates them. The expansion works as a bridge of context between the games rather than a replacement for either story. Its purpose can be explained without spoiling AWE’s ending.

What playing order makes sense?

For players who want to follow how the references developed, one suggested editorial order is Alan Wake (2010), Control (2019), AWE (2020), and Alan Wake 2 (2023). This roughly follows release order and the way players discovered those connections. It is not a required chronology of in-universe events.

Within Control, finishing the main campaign before AWE may help preserve the flow of Jesse’s journey. That is a storytelling preference, not the technical unlock condition published by 505 Games. Someone ready to begin Alan Wake 2 can go straight to it and return to AWE later without violating any requirement established by its creators.

What should you check if AWE does not appear?

First distinguish story progress from installation and licensing. If you have not completed mission 7, you have not met the stated story gate. If you have, check whether your edition includes AWE and whether it is installed. For PS4 Season Pass owners, 505 Games specifically advises downloading the expansion from its PlayStation Store page on the console, then restarting the game or reloading the save.

A separate support article discusses a possible Steam Family Sharing license conflict for certain cases of missing Ultimate Edition DLC. This is not a universal diagnosis and does not justify reinstalling indiscriminately. Checks should be tailored to platform, edition, license and progression before more disruptive steps.
