Yes, a Sim can be reborn in The Sims 4 without the Burning Soul trait. Reaching Dreams Fulfilled in Soul’s Journey, a feature of the Life & Death expansion, is enough to unlock rebirth. EA says a Sim reborn without that trait will not remember their former life. But that does not mean every trace disappears: the official guide also describes unusual connections when meeting people from a previous incarnation and a counter that tracks rebirths. It helps to distinguish recoverable memories, story-related bonds and the appearance you can choose for a new life.
Unlocking rebirth is not the same as unlocking past-life traits
The Dreams Fulfilled tier unlocks rebirth. Sims advance through Soul’s Journey by fulfilling Bucket List goals and other activities EA identifies, including Wants and Aspiration milestones. The Burning Soul trait comes later: the Sim must continue as a Ghost, make progress through Unfinished Business and complete The Big Picture. It is a later reward, not a requirement for basic rebirth.
That distinction affects the choice at death. A Young Adult, Adult or Elder Sim who has already reached Dreams Fulfilled can be reborn immediately, but will not yet have completed the ghost-specific stage needed for Burning Soul. Players seeking the advanced benefits should continue Soul’s Journey as a Ghost before beginning the next life.
Comparison: what changes with and without Burning Soul?
| Feature | Without Burning Soul | With Burning Soul |
|---|---|---|
| Access to rebirth | Yes, once Dreams Fulfilled has been reached. | Yes, after Dreams Fulfilled and the ghost-stage milestone that awards the trait. |
| Recoverable memories | EA says the reborn Sim does not remember their past life. | The trait unlocks specific ways to recover aspects of the previous life. |
| Former personality trait | No access to the documented special recovery interaction. | One trait can be reclaimed with Recall Past Life from the Teen stage onward. |
| Reward traits | No special recovery guaranteed by the guide. | They can be recovered with Peer Into Soul at a mirror; the interaction is repeatable. |
| Early development and childhood skills | The guide does not promise the special trait-related boosts. | Age-dependent developmental benefits exist, but they do not amount to a complete transfer of all skills. |
| Appearance and new household | Create a Sim lets players edit name, age, looks, genetics and family relationships. | The same creation and editing options are available. |
| Links to people from the past life | EA describes familiarity and connection markers for reborn Sims, not restoration of the old relationship. | Special links are also described; Burning Soul is not presented as a full reset of old relationship bars. |
| Rebirth counter | The number of rebirths remains recorded. | The number of rebirths remains recorded. |
Reading the comparison: when EA does not promise that an attribute transfers during ordinary rebirth, that does not prove every piece of save data is deleted. It means there is no official guarantee of that specific recovery. The documentation reviewed does not provide an exhaustive inventory of every value the game preserves or removes.
Not remembering is different from losing every connection
EA’s explanation has two layers. In the Burning Soul section, it states that a reborn Sim without the trait has no memories of their previous life. Further down, when discussing reborn Sims generally, the guide describes reunion effects: Odd Familiarity with former family members, Strange Connection with Sims who were good friends, and Reunited Soulmates! when encountering a past-life soulmate.
These links appear in Sim Profiles and enable their own interactions. EA also specifies that romance is unavailable between Sims who share the familial Odd Familiarity relationship. Not remembering the earlier existence therefore differs from the game world recognizing no trace of it. Equally, there is no basis for promising that friendship and romance bars automatically return at their former levels.
What can Burning Soul actually restore?
Burning Soul follows the Sim into the next life. From the Teen stage onward, Recall Past Life, available by selecting the Sim or another Sim, allows the recovery of one personality trait. Peer Into Soul, accessible at mirrors and usable more than once, is the way to recover reward traits. That difference between a one-time choice and a repeatable interaction matters when planning a new generation.
The trait also provides developmental advantages. EA mentions early-life milestones and skills, as well as boosts for Child Sims or younger depending on the age selected at rebirth. It does not follow that career levels, inventory, every skill or all personality traits are copied in full. EA also lists the ability for a living Sim with Burning Soul to initiate Transcendent WooHoo with a Ghost.
How to choose the right moment for rebirth
- Check Soul’s Journey in the Aspirations Panel and reach Dreams Fulfilled to unlock rebirth.
- Decide whether you want the extra benefits: if so, continue as a Ghost, complete Unfinished Business and reach The Big Picture before rebirth.
- Use the appropriate route: eligible living Sims receive a choice at death; Ghosts can select Rebirth at the Baleful Bog in Ravenwood.
- Customize the next life: the game opens Manage Worlds and then Create a Sim. A reborn Sim starts as an Infant resembling the previous Sim, but age, looks, genetics, relatives and other details can be edited.
Create a Sim also offers an option to reset the Sim to resemble their previous life. This is a visual editing choice, not evidence of automatic memory recovery. The rebirth counter can be found in Soul’s Journey once the Sim becomes a Young Adult again.
Scope and update note: these rules are based on EA’s official documentation consulted on October 24, 2026, for the Life & Death expansion. Later game updates may change interactions or rewards. The guide does not describe a universal rule for deleting or retaining every internal save value, so it would be inaccurate to claim that all memories are technically destroyed.
