Factorio 2.1: can you play Space Age without Quality? What changes for the recycler

In Factorio 2.1, Space Age works without Quality because the recycler has its own official mod. Here is what still works, what disappears, and how to protect existing saves.

Yes. In Factorio 2.1, you can play the Space Age expansion with Quality disabled and still use the recycler. This became possible when Recycler was moved into its own official mod, required by Space Age, while Quality became a recommended but optional dependency. The development team marked the 2.1 branch as stable on October 23, 2026.

On October 24, 2026, the official website listed 2.1.23 as the stable release. The change does not remove the recycler from Fulgora or make Space Age free: it changes which expansion components must remain enabled.

Why Quality is no longer required

In version 2.0, Space Age required Quality because the recycler was tied to that component. This created a progression problem on Fulgora: disabling Quality would also remove the machine needed to process scrap and other items. The studio explained the issue in Friday Facts #442, published on June 12, 2026.

In 2.1, the recycler was separated into its own mod, called Recycler. Space Age still depends on it; Quality is now a recommendation enabled by default. So installing Space Age and switching off Quality alone is an officially supported setup, not a community modification.

Dependency matrix: which components must stay enabled

This comparison covers the expansion's official components, not third-party mods. Elevated Rails is also a Space Age dependency, but the columns focus on the changes to Quality and Recycler.

What the recycler still does without Quality

The recycler's core function remains intact: it reverses the crafting of many items and returns part of their ingredients. According to the official Factorio Wiki, the general rule yields an average of 25% of the materials, losing the other 75%; there are recipe-specific exceptions, and fluid ingredients are not returned.

On Fulgora, processing scrap remains part of progression. What disappears when Quality is disabled is the production of higher-quality item tiers through quality modules. Recycling and quality upgrading are related mechanics, but they are not the same system.

The Recycler described by Wube is an official expansion component. It should not be confused with third-party mods that add alternative recycling machines or modify quality probabilities. The 2.1 change history also records one specific recycling adjustment: pistols now recycle into themselves instead of their crafting ingredients.

What you lose, and what changed even if Quality stays enabled

Without Quality, the progression through higher-quality items, equipment and structures is unavailable. You also lose the advantages of the higher-quality locomotives and wagons introduced in 2.1. The Space Age campaign remains playable, but some factory and space-platform designs may require different solutions without upgraded equipment.

Even with Quality enabled, 2.1 closes off one particular strategy: quality modules can no longer be applied to asteroid reprocessing recipes. This is not a blanket ban on quality modules in recycling, nor the removal of the Quality system.

How to configure Space Age without Quality

The key distinction is between disabling Quality and disabling the recycler. The former is supported in 2.1; the latter conflicts with a Space Age dependency.

  • Update the game to the 2.1 branch and confirm the version installed.
  • In the official mod list, leave Space Age, Recycler and Elevated Rails enabled, and disable only Quality. Restart or reload mods if prompted.
  • Ideally, try the setup in a new map. If you want to apply it to an existing factory, use a copy of the save first.

What about older saves? Back up first

According to Friday Facts #449, Factorio 2.0 saves can be opened in 2.1. This does not guarantee that every factory will work exactly as before: the circuit network's Input/Output split, for example, may affect existing designs. The developers also warn that saves and blueprints upgraded to 2.1 cannot be downgraded to 2.0.

There is a separate concern when disabling Quality halfway through a campaign that already contains higher-quality items or entities. The sources consulted do not provide a blanket guarantee that those elements will be preserved or automatically converted. Do not treat this option as a risk-free migration; back up the save, check mod dependencies and test the copy before replacing your main playthrough.

Stable release and hotfixes as of October 24, 2026

Factorio 2.1 was declared stable on October 23. On October 24, the official download page showed 2.1.23 as the stable release, with its entry dated October 20 in the version history. No newer stable release was found in that check. The 2.1 branch focuses on improvements to existing systems rather than adding new planets or a new research tree.

Before updating an older installation, check the current version and official release notes again, especially if the save uses third-party mods. Space Age without Quality is supported, but compatibility with each additional mod needs to be checked separately.
