Daft Punk's original Random Access Memories, released in 2013, has 13 tracks. The 10th Anniversary Edition, released in May 2023, keeps those 13 and adds nine recordings, for a total of 22. The Drumless Edition, released in November 2023, returns to the original album's 13 songs but presents them without percussion. That is the key difference: the anniversary edition expands the content, while Drumless changes how the familiar music sounds.
This distinction clears up a common misconception. Nine bonus tracks do not mean nine entirely new, finished songs, and Drumless having 13 tracks does not make it a straightforward reissue of the 2013 mixes.
Original vs. 10th Anniversary vs. Drumless: the comparison
| Edition and release date | Tracks | Additional content | What changes in the audio |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original, May 17, 2013 | 13 | None of the anniversary edition's nine bonus tracks | The recordings and arrangements of the album's original presentation |
| 10th Anniversary, May 12, 2023 | 22 (13 + 9) | Demos, studio material, alternate recordings, and a track previously exclusive to the Japanese CD | The main addition is bonus material, not a wholesale replacement of the original 13 recordings with drum-free versions |
| Drumless, November 17, 2023 | 13 | None of the 10th Anniversary edition's nine bonus tracks | Percussion removed from all 13 songs, according to Daft Punk's official description |
What does the original 2013 album offer?
This is the record in the running order in which listeners first encountered songs such as Give Life Back to Music, Giorgio by Moroder, Get Lucky, and Contact. Its sound brings together studio-played instruments, electronic production, and contributors including Nile Rodgers, Pharrell Williams, Giorgio Moroder, and Julian Casablancas. For the rhythmic dynamics originally intended for the record, or simply its 13 songs without supplementary material, this is the reference edition.
Drumless follows the same track order as the original. Choosing between the two is therefore not about finding another song; it is about hearing the same selection with or without its percussion layer.
What was added to the 10th Anniversary Edition?
Daft Punk describes the May 12, 2023 edition as an expansion featuring nine additional tracks and approximately 35 minutes of material released for the album's tenth anniversary. Both the artist's official listing and the two-CD physical edition list 22 tracks in total, with the bonus material placed after Contact.
- Horizon Ouverture and Horizon (Japan CD): the latter brings back a track that had already been released on the Japanese CD. It was therefore not an entirely unheard composition worldwide.
- GLBTM (Studio Outtakes), GL (Early Take), and LYTD (Vocoder Tests): their titles identify studio outtakes, an early take, and vocoder experiments, respectively. They offer glimpses of the working process and alternate stages, rather than three conventional, fully finished new songs.
- Infinity Repeating (2013 Demo) and Prime (2012 Unfinished): the former features Julian Casablancas's vocals in a period recording presented as a demo, while the latter is explicitly labeled an unfinished piece from 2012.
- The Writing of Fragments of Time and Touch (2021 Epilogue): the first documents an aspect of the creative process with Todd Edwards; the second is labeled a 2021 epilogue on the release.
The promotional description of “unreleased music” therefore needs context: this collection brings together sketches, experiments, alternate versions, and a song already known from a regional release. It is especially useful to listeners interested in how the album took shape. The bonus-track count should not be mistaken for a count of wholly new compositions.
What actually changes on Drumless?
According to the official page, Random Access Memories (Drumless Edition), released on November 17, 2023, removes percussion from every track. It retains the original running order and all 13 song titles, without including the anniversary edition's nine bonuses. Pitchfork reported the project in September of that year, when the percussion-free version of Within was presented as an early preview.
For a listener comparing the recordings, that absence can make vocals, harmonies, and textures that were partly masked by the beats easier to notice. This is a listening consequence of removing percussion, not an announcement of new lyrics, newly recorded vocals, or new compositions. “Drumless” also does not mean “instrumental”: vocal parts remain on songs that have them.
Which edition should you listen to?
- First listen or original experience: choose the 2013 album, with its 13 tracks and percussion intact.
- Interested in demos and the making of the record: choose the 2023 10th Anniversary edition, with the original album plus nine bonus tracks.
- Want to compare arrangements, textures, and the role of drums: choose Drumless and switch between its tracks and the 2013 versions.
There is also a separate technical distinction: the label's tenth-anniversary announcement mentioned an availability of the original album in Dolby Atmos spatial audio. That concerns a playback format or mix and is not another name for the nine bonus tracks or the percussion-free concept. Physical configurations, digital formats, and streaming availability can vary by country and over time. When choosing, check the edition name, track count, and track listing on the store or platform rather than relying on the cover artwork alone.
