Gears of War: E-Day takes place on Emergence Day, 14 years before the events of the original Gears of War. It follows the beginning of the Locust invasion on Sera and portrays Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago at an earlier point in their lives than in the first game. In the games' story chronology, E-Day comes first, even though it was released on October 6, 2026.
The 14-year gap refers to the fictional timeline, not the release calendar. The original Gears of War arrived in 2006, while E-Day launched in 2026. The releases are 20 years apart, but the newer game's story takes place earlier.
Where does E-Day fit in the Gears of War timeline?
Space.com's chronology guide, updated on October 14, 2026, arranges the games by when their stories happen. The opening stretch of that timeline runs as follows:
| Story order | Game | Position relative to E-Day |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Gears of War: E-Day | Emergence Day, beginning of the Locust invasion |
| 2 | Gears of War: Judgment | After E-Day and before the original Gears |
| 3 | Gears Tactics | After Judgment and before the original Gears |
| 4 | Gears of War (original) | 14 years after Emergence Day |
This table shows the order of events, not the order in which the games were released. It also avoids assigning specific in-universe dates to the games in between. For the E-Day question, the confirmed reference point is the 14-year interval leading to the first Gears.
What is Emergence Day?
No ending spoilers: Emergence Day is the moment the Locust Horde rises from beneath Sera and begins its assault on humanity. E-Day is built around encountering that threat when the protagonists barely understand it, rather than joining a war that has already continued for years.
Marcus and Dom are younger here. The Coalition describes them as veterans of the Pendulum Wars who must confront an enemy unlike anything they have faced. Their relationship, and how they respond to the invasion's beginning, help explain why this period matters to the later games.
Why is E-Day neither a spin-off nor Gears 6?
Xbox Wire explicitly clarified when introducing the project in 2024 that E-Day is not a spin-off. It is a new entry in the mainline series, set earlier in its chronology. The game returns to the origins of Marcus, Dom and the conflict with the Locust, but it does not remake the original game's 2006 campaign.
That also explains why it is not a direct continuation of the events of Gears 5. The Coalition chose to tell an origin story before pushing the main storyline into a different period. According to the studio, that choice does not mean abandoning what happened in Gears of War 4 and Gears 5.
Should you start the series with E-Day?
That depends on the experience you want. For story chronology, start with E-Day, then continue to Judgment, Gears Tactics and the original Gears of War. For release order and the series' development over time, begin with 2006's Gears of War instead.
These orders answer different questions. E-Day depicts the conflict's beginning, which shapes the later games; the original title shows that same universe 14 years later. That distinction is all you need to place E-Day without memorizing every date in Sera's history.
