Spoiler warning: this article reveals the main events and ending of Mad Max: Fury Road (2015).

Furiosa returns to the Citadel because she learns that the Green Place, her childhood home, no longer exists as a refuge. Max realizes that crossing an immense salt flat without a known destination may be more dangerous than confronting Immortan Joe and taking his fortress, which still has water and crops. This change of goal turns the women’s escape into an attempt at liberation. The recap below covers only the events depicted in the 2015 film.

The full story in chronological order

1. Max is captured and Furiosa diverts the War Rig

In the post-apocalyptic wasteland, Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy) struggles to survive alone, haunted by people he failed to protect. He is captured by the War Boys of Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne), ruler of the Citadel. Because his blood can help a sick soldier, Max is held as a donor for Nux (Nicholas Hoult). The stronghold concentrates scarce resources, especially water, and Joe keeps its population dependent on his authority.

Meanwhile, commander Furiosa (Charlize Theron) sets off in the War Rig on a supply mission. Instead of following the planned route, she veers away: she is smuggling five women held captive by Joe out of the Citadel, Angharad, Capable, Toast, the Dag and Cheedo. When Joe discovers their escape, he sends his fighters and allies after them. Nux joins the chase with Max fastened to the front of his car, still being used as a blood supply.

2. The sandstorm forces Max and Furiosa to cooperate

Furiosa drives into a sandstorm to shake off her pursuers. Nux tries to catch the truck but loses his vehicle, and Max manages to break free. After the storm, he finds Furiosa and the five women beside the War Rig. Suspicious, he tries to take it and escape alone, but its security mechanism prevents him from getting far. His only practical option is to strike a temporary agreement with Furiosa and travel together.

At this point Max is still chiefly concerned with staying alive. Furiosa wants to get the escapees beyond Joe’s reach. Their cooperation grows out of necessity, not instant trust or a shared plan to overthrow the ruler.

3. The canyon and Angharad’s death

Their route leads through a canyon controlled by bikers, with whom Furiosa had arranged safe passage in return for fuel. The arrival of Joe’s army disrupts the deal and triggers another clash. During the chase, the pregnant Angharad falls from the truck while trying to help the others and is fatally run over by Joe’s own vehicle. The escape has now cost the group an irreversible loss.

Nux, having failed to retrieve the women, begins to question his devotion to his leader. When Capable finds him hiding inside the truck and shows him compassion, he encounters a kind of human connection different from the obedience he was taught.

4. The swamp, the Bullet Farmer and Nux’s change of heart

At night, the truck becomes stuck in a muddy area. Max and Furiosa try to hold back the pursuers, including the Bullet Farmer, one of Joe’s allies. Furiosa damages the enemy’s eyesight; Max goes off to confront him beyond the others’ view and returns with guns and ammunition. Nux helps free the vehicle and begins assisting the people he was supposed to capture.

Their alliance changes: Max is no longer acting only to escape, while Nux, once eager to die for Joe’s approval, starts making choices that protect the group. Furiosa’s destination is still the Green Place, the fertile land she remembers from childhood.

5. The Vuvalini reveal that the Green Place is gone

Furiosa meets members of the Vuvalini, a community of women associated with the place where she grew up. The reunion shatters her expectations: the once-fertile region has become the ruined swamp they already crossed. The home that inspired the entire journey can no longer shelter the escapees.

With no safe destination, Furiosa and the others consider crossing a vast salt flat in the hope of finding somewhere habitable. Max initially walks away. This is the crucial turn in the plot: the hope of returning to the past gives way to the need to build a future using resources that still exist.

6. Max proposes returning to the Citadel

Max comes back with another possibility. The Citadel has water and vegetation, while much of the force that defended it has left to pursue the truck. If they can get past Joe and block the canyon passage, Furiosa and her allies may reach the fortress before the rest of his army. The plan is dangerous, but it has a concrete objective, unlike a journey into the salt without a destination.

Furiosa accepts. Rather than only searching for the sanctuary of her childhood, she now confronts the source of the violence from which the women escaped. Returning does not mean surrendering to Joe. It means trying to take control of the Citadel away from him.

7. The return battle, Joe’s death and Nux’s sacrifice

On the way back, Joe’s vehicles intercept the group. Some Vuvalini are killed, Toast is captured and Furiosa suffers a serious wound. Max fights Rictus, Joe’s son, while Furiosa reaches the tyrant’s vehicle to rescue Toast. Toast’s distraction gives Furiosa the opening she needs to hook Joe’s mask into the vehicle’s machinery and kill him.

To prevent the pursuers from passing through the canyon, Nux deliberately destroys the War Rig, dying in the crash and blocking the route. The survivors continue in Joe’s vehicle. Max transfuses his own blood to help Furiosa, closing the circle opened when he was held as an unwilling donor.

8. Furiosa is welcomed and Max vanishes into the crowd

The group reaches the Citadel with Immortan Joe’s body. Seeing that their ruler is dead, the inhabitants celebrate. Furiosa, the surviving women and the remaining Vuvalini are raised to the upper levels of the fortress. Max does not go up with them: after an acknowledging glance at Furiosa, he walks away and disappears among the people.

Why does Furiosa return instead of continuing to flee?

Three factors drive the decision. First, the Green Place is no longer a real option. Second, crossing the salt flat would be a gamble with no identifiable destination. Third, the Citadel’s water and crops genuinely exist, although Joe controls them. Max turns that knowledge into a strategy: take advantage of the army’s temporary absence to seize a place capable of supporting the survivors.

There is also a shift in meaning, an interpretation of the events shown. At first, Furiosa tries to save people by removing them from the system oppressing them. By the end, she must return and change who controls that system. The film contrasts the search for a lost past with the possibility of building a different life in the present.

What does the ending mean for Max, Furiosa and Nux?

For Furiosa, Joe’s death ends the tyrant’s direct rule and opens the possibility of reorganizing the Citadel. The crowd’s welcome suggests support for liberation, but the film ends before showing what stable government looks like, whether all the water will be distributed, or what future conflicts might arise. Saying that she has already solved every problem there would go beyond what the ending shows.

Max regains a degree of connection with others without giving up his life as a wanderer. Donating blood willingly reverses the violence inflicted on him at the start and helps save Furiosa. Nux completes a transformation of his own: he abandons his desire to die for Joe’s approval and chooses to sacrifice himself to protect his new allies. Their choices are different, but each rejects the tyrant’s way of thinking.

What happens in the 2015 film, and what was explained in Furiosa (2024)?

Fury Road introduces Furiosa as an adult and shows her memories of the Green Place, the five women’s escape and the return to the Citadel. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024) is a prequel released later that develops events preceding the 2015 chase. This recap does not treat scenes, characters or retrospective explanations from the prequel as revelations made within Fury Road. The reason for returning is understandable from the 2015 film alone.
