Is Naruto x Ninkū a Naruto sequel? The four-episode crossover explained

Announced on October 10, 2026, Naruto x Ninkū is an original four-episode crossover, not a regular new Naruto season. Here is what is confirmed about its story, staff, premiere status, and the separate Shadow Rising manga.

No. Naruto x Ninkū was not announced as a regular continuation of Naruto, a new season of Naruto Shippuden, or a sequel to Boruto. It is an original four-episode crossover that brings Naruto characters together with those of Ninkū, Kōji Kiriyama's work that influenced Masashi Kishimoto. Unveiled on October 10, 2026, at New York Comic Con, the anime is in production. As of October 19, no premiere date or viewing platform had been confirmed for Brazil.

The announcement included a teaser and a promotional visual. The distinction that matters is the format: the production is described as a limited anime series with an original story, not the start of a lengthy new season continuing Naruto's main chronology.

What is Naruto x Ninkū about?

According to the official introduction, Kakashi gives Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura a mission but cannot join them. Naruto temporarily takes charge of Team 7. Along the way, the three become lost in another world and meet Fūsuke, the young Ninkū protagonist whose face resembles a frog's.

That is the announced premise, not a recap of released episodes. The production has not revealed the mission's full development, the outcome of the encounter, or the runtime of each installment. The appearance of a younger Team 7, also mentioned by Naruto's Japanese voice actress, helps identify the characters' life stage, but it does not establish that the story will change the canon of existing series.

Why is Ninkū so important to Naruto?

Created by Kōji Kiriyama, Ninkū began serialization in Weekly Shōnen Jump in 1993 and received an anime adaptation in 1995. Its story follows Fūsuke and other practitioners of a fictional martial art combining elements of ninjutsu and karate. The franchise also had the Ninkū Second Stage manga, published from 2005 to 2011.

Kishimoto said in the official materials that he started drawing Naruto because he wanted to see a continuation of Ninkū. To him, Fūsuke is a kind of creative mentor to Naruto. Discussing the collaboration, he said that he had finally been able to make a continuation of Ninkū in the sense he had wanted. This expresses the creative connection between the works; it does not make the crossover a regular new Naruto season. Nor does it, on its own, establish a shared chronological continuity between the two franchises.

Who is making the four episodes?

Masashi Kishimoto and Kōji Kiriyama are supervising the entire story. Animation production is handled by PIERROT FILMS, with Noriyuki Abe directing and Tetsuya Nishio designing the characters. These professionals have ties to the screen histories of both series, which provides context for the creative team without predicting what the episodes will show.

The official site confirms Junko Takeuchi as Naruto, Rika Matsumoto as Fūsuke, Noriaki Sugiyama as Sasuke, Chie Nakamura as Sakura, and Kazuhiko Inoue as Kakashi, among other members of the Japanese cast. The project page also lists FLOW songs for the opening and ending, respectively GO!!! and Viva Rock.

When will it premiere, and where can it be watched in Brazil?

A premiere date has not been confirmed. The October 10 announcement unveiled the teaser and visual but gave no release schedule for the four episodes, broadcaster, streaming service, or Brazilian availability. There is therefore no basis for promising a simulcast, Brazilian Portuguese dubbing, or a simultaneous international release.

The June 2027 date discussed at the same event should not be mistaken for the crossover's premiere. June 2027 is the announced release window for the Naruto Card Game, not Naruto x Ninkū. October 10, 2026, was the announcement date, not the anime's release date.

Is the new Naruto Shadow Rising manga a separate project?

Yes. The panel separately revealed Naruto Shadow Rising, a new Naruto manga drawn by Masashi Kishimoto. Its teaser featured storyboard sketches with Naruto, Kakashi, Sasuke, and Sakura, as well as the Hokage faces carved into the mountain, including a seventh carving under construction. Those images are an announced preview, not a definitive plot synopsis.

The official announcement provided neither a publication date nor a chapter count. The team pointed to Jump Festa 2027, scheduled for December 19 and 20, 2026, as the venue for further information. Shadow Rising is a manga; Naruto x Ninkū is the four-episode animated limited series. They are not two names for the same production.

What else was announced at New York Comic Con?

The NARUTO: What's Next? panel covered initiatives in different formats. This table separates the announcements so that a date or feature belonging to one project is not mistakenly assigned to another.

Director Destin Daniel Cretton also sent a message about the live-action Naruto adaptation, without announcing a film release date. The four-episode announcement should therefore be understood for what it is: a meeting of two ninja stories involving their creators, with broadcast details still pending.
