One Piece: Why Is the Anime Now Limited to 26 Episodes a Year?

Toei Animation introduced a two-cour schedule and a cap of 26 episodes per year in 2026. Here's why it changed, how the breaks work and why the main series aired 25 episodes in 2026.

The One Piece anime now releases no more than 26 new episodes of its main TV series per year because Toei Animation moved away from an almost year-round weekly schedule and introduced two broadcast blocks, known as cours, in 2026. According to the studio, the change is meant to make the storytelling more focused, bring the adaptation's pacing closer to Eiichiro Oda's manga and strengthen the production structure. The cap does not mean exactly 26 episodes are guaranteed every year.

The change was announced on October 28, 2025, during an official One Piece livestream. It took effect after a break from January through March 2026, with the Elbaph arc beginning on April 5. Episode 1180, broadcast on September 27, closed out the main series' new episodes for the year. Its return was announced for 2027, without a specific date.

Why did Toei reduce the episode count?

Ryuta Koike, a One Piece producer at Toei, described the reorganization as a strategic choice for the series' future. The announcement on the franchise's official Japanese website sets out a specific adaptation goal: to aim for approximately one manga chapter per anime episode while retaining the creative possibilities of animation. That is a production guideline, not a fixed formula for every episode.

The new approach also prioritizes advancing the main story rather than filling the annual schedule with recap episodes. In comments revisited by ORICON in September 2026, Koike denied that the change resulted from a lack of budget or a staff-overload crisis. Claims that the reduction was driven solely by money, or that every episode is guaranteed better animation, therefore go beyond what those statements establish.

The practical trade-off is fewer weeks with brand-new episodes and a schedule that the producer considers better suited to telling the story. Toei has not promised identical hiatus lengths or said that each cour will cover an entire story arc.

Was the 2024 hiatus the start of this schedule?

Not exactly. In October 2024, Toei had already suspended new Egghead episodes after episode 1122, announcing their return for April 2025. During that interval it broadcast the One Piece Fan Letter special and a re-edited version of the Fish-Man Island saga. That long break was an important precedent, but it was not yet the formal announcement of the 26-episode annual cap, which came in October 2025.

It is also important to distinguish the January-to-March 2026 production break from the division between that year's broadcast blocks. The gap between two cours need not last three months, and a broadcast pause does not automatically mark the end of a story arc.

How were the 2026 episodes scheduled?

PeriodWhat happened
October 28, 2025The maximum of 26 episodes per year and the two-cour structure were announced.
December 28, 2025Episode 1155 concluded Egghead on Japanese television.
January to March 2026A production break preceded Elbaph's premiere.
April 5 to June 28, 2026Elbaph's first block: episodes 1156 through 1168, 13 in total.
July 5, 2026The Nami-focused spin-off special One Piece Heroines aired. It is not a numbered main-series episode.
July 12 to September 27, 2026Elbaph continued with episodes 1169 through 1180, another 12 main-series episodes.
2027More new episodes have been announced, with no exact return date confirmed as of October 28, 2026.

That means 2026 had 25 new numbered episodes of the main One Piece series, from 1156 through 1180. The July special One Piece Heroines is a separate spin-off and should not be added to the main-series episode numbers. The announced 26 was a ceiling, not a promise to fill every slot.

Do two cours mean two different story arcs?

No. A cour is a television scheduling unit, generally associated with a broadcast block lasting about three months; a story arc is a division of the narrative itself. Egghead ended in December 2025, and Elbaph began in April 2026. Both 2026 broadcast blocks belong to Elbaph, which did not end just because that year's broadcasts stopped.

As of October 28, 2026, the confirmed information was that the main series would return in 2027. There was no official date for episode 1181 or a complete timetable for future blocks. The new model explains the longer gaps between releases, but it does not establish a future broadcast calendar.
