Spoiler warning: this article reveals major events from Season 4 of Supernatural.
Dean Winchester was dead for about four months in the world of the living, but he describes his experience in Hell as roughly 40 years. For the first 30, Alastair repeatedly tortured him; eventually, Dean gave in and began torturing other souls. Without realizing it, he broke the first seal connected to Lucifer's release. Castiel was sent to pull him out of Hell and, according to his explanation, to try to prevent that plan from advancing. The season later reveals that Heaven's leadership had conflicting interests.
Why did four months on Earth amount to 40 years in Hell?
At the end of Season 3, Dean dies when his deal expires and hellhounds drag him away. As Season 4 begins in Lazarus Rising (4x01), he awakens inside his coffin, climbs out of his grave and discovers a handprint on his shoulder. At first, neither he nor Sam or Bobby can explain his return. Castiel introduces himself as an angel and says he rescued Dean on God's orders because Dean has work to do.
The duration of his experience becomes clear only in Heaven and Hell (4x10). Dean tells Sam that while about four months passed on Earth, he experienced approximately 40 years. This is a difference in how time passes or is experienced within the story, not a claim that his body was missing for 40 years in the human world. The series uses Dean's own estimate without establishing a universal conversion formula between Earth days and years in Hell.
What did Alastair do to Dean, and why was he traumatized?
Alastair subjected Dean to repeated torture. In his account to his brother, Dean describes his body being torn apart and restored so the suffering could begin again. At the end of every cycle, the demon offered him an escape: Dean could stop being the victim if he agreed to torture other souls.
He resisted for 30 years until he could bear no more. Once he agreed, he inflicted on other souls the suffering he had endured. Given the roughly 40 years he describes and the 30 years of resistance, that final stretch amounts to about ten years. The trauma involves both the violence inflicted on him and his guilt about what he subsequently did. When he tells Sam, Dean shows profound remorse and even wishes he could stop feeling anything.
Why did Dean's decision break the first seal?
In On the Head of a Pin (4x16), Castiel and Uriel force Dean to interrogate Alastair, now a prisoner of the angels. The demon reveals that Lilith's plan depended on breaking a righteous man in Hell. When Dean finally agreed to torture his first soul, he fulfilled the condition that opened the first seal. This began the sequence of seals whose breaking would allow Lucifer to be released.
Dean initially doubts the revelation, but Castiel confirms that his act did break the first seal. The distinction matters: Dean was involved in the event, but he did not know about the prophetic condition or consciously choose to free Lucifer. Alastair and the demons exploited his resistance until it collapsed.
So why did Castiel rescue Dean?
Castiel explains in episode 4x16 that the angels uncovered Lilith's plan and laid siege to Hell to reach Dean before he broke the first seal. They were too late: by the time Castiel pulled him out, the condition had already been fulfilled. That is why rescuing Dean did not prevent the first step toward the Apocalypse.
Castiel also says that, under the mission assigned to the hunter, the righteous man who began the sequence would be the only one able to end it. Dean therefore remained important even after the attempt to rescue him in time had failed. Castiel himself admits that his superiors do not tell him everything. His initial claim about an order from God should be understood as what he believed and communicated at that point.
How does the Season 4 finale change Heaven's story?
Lucifer Rising (4x22) adds a twist: Zachariah reveals that senior members of the angelic hierarchy wanted the Apocalypse to happen, expecting to defeat Hell afterward. Dean was meant to take part in the confrontation with Lucifer once he was released. This revelation means Heaven cannot be treated as a single group with identical intentions, and not every order passed to Castiel can be regarded as a transparent explanation.
Castiel begins questioning obedience to his superiors and chooses to help Dean attempt to prevent the last seal from breaking. His intervention does not stop Sam from killing Lilith, the act that breaks that final seal. This does not prove that Castiel originally rescued Dean for personal reasons or knew Zachariah's entire plan from the beginning. What the season shows is his change from carrying out orders to being willing to disobey them.
Which episodes reveal each part of the story?
| Episode | What it explains |
|---|---|
| 4x01, Lazarus Rising | Dean returns from the grave, and Castiel takes responsibility for rescuing him. |
| 4x10, Heaven and Hell | Dean explains the 40 years in Hell, 30 years of resistance and the torture of other souls. |
| 4x16, On the Head of a Pin | Alastair reveals the first seal; Castiel confirms it and explains the rescue attempt. |
| 4x22, Lucifer Rising | The senior angels' plan comes to light, and Castiel changes his position. |
Dean's return, then, does not erase what he endured in Hell. The rescue ends his suffering but comes after the first seal has been broken. Much of Season 4's tension comes from the difference between saving Dean, preventing Lucifer's release and discovering who in Heaven actually wanted to stop it.
