The Witcher: Which Books Are Behind Netflix’s Final Two Seasons?

Netflix has named three Andrzej Sapkowski novels as the source material for The Witcher's Seasons 4 and 5: Baptism of Fire, The Tower of Swallows, and The Lady of the Lake. The streamer announced this group on April 18, 2024, when it confirmed that Season 5 would end the series. That does not establish a one-book-per-season structure or prove that any particular scene from the novels will appear on screen.

Season 4 premiered on October 30, 2025, and all eight episodes are now available on Netflix. Season 5 remains the announced final installment. To understand the closing stretch, it helps to distinguish the books' reading order, the adaptation plan, and what has actually been released.

What are the three books, and in what order should you read them?

In Brazilian publisher WMF Martins Fontes' numbered collection, the three novels named by Netflix are volumes 5, 6, and 7, following Blood of Elves and The Time of Contempt. Within the central five-novel saga, however, they are novels three, four, and five: the collection's first two volumes, The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny, are short-story collections.

Position in the Brazilian collectionBrazilian titleEnglish titleRole in the literary saga
5Batismo de FogoBaptism of FireInjured after the crisis among the sorcerers, Geralt begins searching for Ciri during the war and gathers allies along the way.
6A Torre da AndorinhaThe Tower of SwallowsThe pursuit of Ciri grows more prominent as Geralt and his companions continue trying to reach her.
7A Senhora do LagoThe Lady of the LakeThe fifth and final novel in the central saga brings together the narrative threads leading to the literary ending.

One English-title detail can cause confusion: Netflix calls the book The Tower of the Swallow in its announcement, while the Orbit/Hachette edition uses The Tower of Swallows. These are names for the same novel, not separate books.

These numbers describe the cited Brazilian book collection, not an episode schedule. Season of Storms, classified as a prelude in that boxed edition, is not one of the three novels Netflix named for the final seasons.

How do the books relate to the final two seasons?

Netflix's announcement treats Seasons 4 and 5 together as an adaptation of all three novels. Its synopsis for Season 4 begins after the separation of Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri following Season 3, as they cross a war-ravaged Continent. That premise aligns with the starting situation in Baptism of Fire, but it does not set a fixed boundary between individual books and seasons.

The crucial distinction is between literary source material and a scene confirmed for the television adaptation. Netflix can rearrange storylines, combine characters, or move events between episodes. A conflict described in The Tower of Swallows or The Lady of the Lake is not evidence that Season 5 will film it or reproduce it in the same way. Likewise, finding material already adapted in Season 4 does not make every remaining chapter a confirmed shooting script.

Netflix confirmed Liam Hemsworth as Geralt for both final seasons and Laurence Fishburne as Regis. That casting change does not alter the novels' order or establish which passages the show will use.

Do you need to read the entire collection first?

To follow the novels without losing the relationships built across the saga, the natural route starts with The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny, continues through Blood of Elves and The Time of Contempt, and then reaches the three final books listed above. Readers who only want to identify the sources for Seasons 4 and 5 can begin with Brazilian volumes 5 through 7, but those books depend on earlier events and character connections.

It is also important not to mix the video games, short-story collections, and main novels into a Netflix season-by-season chronology. The company identified specific Sapkowski books, not one complete novel assigned to each production year.

What is confirmed about the fifth and final season?

As of October 28, 2026, Netflix still identified Season 5 as the final season, but the consulted sources did not provide an officially confirmed exact premiere date. An August 7, 2026 report by What's on Netflix pointed to 2027 as the revised expectation after earlier promotional material had linked the season to 2026. This should be attributed to independent reporting, not presented as Netflix's official postponement announcement.

The three-novel source list, then, is an explicit confirmation from Netflix. The precise way the remaining material will become the show's ending still calls for a distinction between what Season 4 has already shown and what Season 5 will actually release. This guide avoids revealing the novels' ending.
