Spoiler warning: this article discusses the storytelling structure of The Witcher Season 4, including scenes from Episode 8. It does not reveal the main characters’ fates in the novels.
Nimue is a young woman fascinated by the stories of Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri, but she lives in their future. At the start of Season 4, storyteller Stribog says that approximately 100 years have passed since the events he is recounting. The time jump shows how the witcher’s adventures have become legend and introduces Nimue’s potential connection to Ciri. It does not confirm Geralt’s death or reveal how the saga ends.
What exactly takes place 100 years later?
Season 4 moves between the main trio’s adventures and scenes of people who know about those adventures through accounts passed down much later. Stribog, played by Clive Russell, tells a group of children a tale about Geralt and a kikimora, the creature associated with the series’ Season 1 opening. Nimue, played at this age by Eve Ridley, challenges his version.
During their disagreement, Stribog places the events he is describing roughly a century in the past. This is a relative time reference, not a specific calendar year on the Continent. Nor does it mean that every scene in the main storyline occurs exactly 100 years before every scene featuring Nimue.
| Storyline | What we see | How it connects |
|---|---|---|
| Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer’s era | The saga’s events, including the family’s separation and their journeys in Season 4. | These are the events Stribog recounts as history. |
| Young Nimue’s future | The girl listens to Stribog, questions his accounts, and examines Jaskier’s book. | Stribog places the remembered events about 100 years earlier. |
| Adult Nimue’s future | In Episode 8, she says she intends to study at Aretuza. | This is years after Nimue’s childhood, still within the future storyline. |
There are therefore two different shifts: first, the century separating Geralt’s adventures from the people hearing about them; then, the years between young Nimue and adult Nimue. Netflix explicitly describes the second meeting as taking place many years later without specifying an exact interval.
Who is Nimue, and why does she challenge Stribog?
Nimue is not introduced as one of Geralt’s traveling companions. She has grown up hearing and reading about him. Her preferred source is Half a Century of Poetry, credited to Jaskier, the bard who belongs to the main timeline. For Nimue, oral accounts and written versions do not necessarily tell the same story, and she argues about those differences with Stribog.
That disagreement has a clear narrative purpose. Speaking to TVLine, showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich explained that the opening explores how stories change depending on the teller. The series also revisits familiar moments with Liam Hemsworth playing Geralt after Henry Cavill left the role. It stages different viewpoints, but does not by itself establish that earlier events have been erased from canon or that Nimue has traveled through time.
How is Nimue connected to Ciri?
In Jaskier’s book, Nimue spots an illustration labeled Cirilla and the Lady of the Lake. She takes it as a possible sign that she will have a part to play in Ciri’s story. That is the character’s own interpretation, not confirmation of how the connection will unfold in the adaptation.
The clue points toward Andrzej Sapkowski’s novel The Lady of the Lake, which Netflix has named among the books informing the final seasons. But the Season 4 illustration does not disclose Ciri’s literary ending. Treating the novel’s title, the caption beneath the illustration, and Nimue’s identity as one definitive revelation would erase the very uncertainty the show preserves.
When Nimue reappears as an adult in Episode 8, Sha Dessi plays her. She tells Stribog that she plans to study at Aretuza, and he gives her his copy of Half a Century of Poetry, suggesting that her involvement may still matter. What the episode shows is the beginning of her own journey, not the completion of a mission involving Ciri.
Why does this timeline matter for Season 5?
The past storyline follows Geralt’s attempt to find Ciri while she and Yennefer are on separate paths. Nimue’s storyline shows how those experiences reach later generations, filtered through memory, books, and competing versions. The series thus introduces an observer who might eventually become more than a reader of legends.
On April 18, 2024, Netflix announced that Season 5 would be the last and that the two final seasons would draw on Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, and The Lady of the Lake. This confirms the broad direction of the adaptation, not which choices or outcomes from the novels will be carried over unchanged. As of October 25, 2026, the sources reviewed for this article did not establish an officially confirmed exact premiere date for Season 5.
The crucial distinction is that the 100-year gap explains where Nimue stands in relation to the legend, not how Geralt’s story ends. Stribog’s account establishes the past; the illustration connects Nimue’s interest to Ciri; and her departure for Aretuza leaves her future role open.
