Witch Hat Atelier: why did Easthies try to erase Coco’s memories?

In episode 8, Easthies accuses Coco after her spell turns a cliffside to sand. Basic casting seals and altered ink change the explanation.

Spoiler warning: this article discusses events from episodes 7 and 8 of Witch Hat Atelier.

Easthies tried to erase Coco's memories because he interpreted an entire area turning to sand as evidence of forbidden magic, not because he had proved she knowingly cast an illegal spell. Episode 8 separates that accusation from the investigation's findings: Coco's drawn spell was basic, while Qifrey identifies a problem with the ink she used. The attempt to erase her memories is stopped.

How did a rescue become an accusation of forbidden magic?

In episode 7, Coco and Agott try to save Custas, who is trapped under a boulder after a landslide beside a river. Coco draws a rock-breaking spell and another seal to levitate herself and the boy. The rescue succeeds, but the spell aimed at the rock has a much wider effect than expected: part of the cliff and riverbank disintegrates into sand.

Members of the Knights Moralis arrive to find a large-scale change to the terrain. Easthies connects that scale of destruction to forbidden wartime magic. Coco acknowledges that she cast a spell but insists that the spell itself was not forbidden. The distinction matters: admitting she drew and cast it is not the same as admitting she intentionally used prohibited magic.

Why did Easthies want to erase Coco's memories?

The Knights Moralis enforce the laws and secrets governing the use of magic. Easthies believes a serious breach demands immediate action and prepares to remove Coco's memories of magic. His judgment relies on the visible aftermath, before the spell's unusual strength has been convincingly explained.

Richeh intervenes at the last moment, the restraints holding Coco and Agott are broken, and Tetia helps them land safely. Qifrey arrives and confronts Easthies. Coco's memories are therefore not erased in this sequence. The confrontation exposes a clash between rigid enforcement and listening to apprentices who were trying to save someone's life.

What does the investigation actually uncover?

After the confrontation, Easthies checks Coco's casting seals and looks for signs of other concealed spells, including on her body. According to Crunchyroll's episode 8 recap, he finds nothing incriminating. Animate Times likewise reports that the inspected seals correspond to basic magic, even though their effects had been extraordinary.

That undermines the initial accusation but does not mean the case is formally closed: Easthies says the incident will be reported to the Great Hall. The more precise conclusion supported by the sources is that the attempted memory erasure was interrupted, and this inspection did not establish that Coco deliberately cast forbidden magic.

How does the ink change the explanation?

Qifrey recovers Coco's ink bottle and notices something odd: even after she has drawn several seals, the bottle still seems full. At Nolnoa's shop, he observes an unusual bluish tint and tests the substance. A small spell also produces a disproportionately intense effect, suggesting that the fault was not simply in Coco's drawing.

Qifrey and Nolnoa discover a magical link between bottles that lets separate containers share their contents. Crunchyroll's account connects this clue to the mysterious Brimmed Caps and depicts one of their members adding blood to a bottle of ink. The evidence explains why Coco's ink was behaving abnormally, but it does not establish that she knew about the alteration.

An important distinction remains: the anime's official Japanese episode synopsis confirms that Qifrey identifies the ink as the source of the unexpected power. The details of the linked bottles and clues concerning the Brimmed Caps come from the fuller episode recap, not from that brief official synopsis alone.

What is answered, and what remains unresolved?

The episode separates three questions that initially look like one. The suspicion: Easthies sees an effect he considers consistent with forbidden magic. The action: Coco uses a basic spell to rescue Custas, but its outcome is abnormal. The material explanation: Qifrey discovers tampering with the ink and evidence pointing toward the Brimmed Caps.

The episode does not establish that Coco wanted to transform the terrain. Nor does Easthies' investigation become definitive proof of her guilt. The altered ink redirects attention toward the source of the interference and what Qifrey knows about it. Investigating a possible breach is not the same as proving that the apprentice committed it deliberately.
