5 Centimeters per Second: why is the live-action film from 2025 but its North American release from 2026?

The live-action adaptation opened in Japan on October 10, 2025, and began its North American theatrical release on October 23, 2026. Here is how the regional release dates relate to the 2007 animated film.

The live-action 5 Centimeters per Second is a 2025 Japanese film because it premiered in Japan on October 10 of that year. Its North American theatrical rollout began on October 23, 2026, through GKIDS. Those are two regional release dates for the same adaptation, not two separate remakes.

There is also a third production to keep separate: Makoto Shinkai’s original animated film, released in 2007. It is the source of the new feature, but it is not the same production as the film directed by Yoshiyuki Okuyama.

Three dates that distinguish the anime from the live-action film

Year and marketProductionDirectorWhat the date refers to

Beginning October 23, 2026, North AmericaThe same 2025 live-action adaptationYoshiyuki OkuyamaStart of the North American theatrical rollout announced by GKIDS.

Calling it a "2025 film" refers to the adaptation’s original release. The 2026 date instead marks a later theatrical window in another market. A regional release schedule does not change the year of its Japanese premiere.

How the distribution timeline took shape

On September 22, 2024, Makoto Shinkai’s official works website announced the first live-action adaptation of one of his animated films, then planned for fall 2025 in Japan. Yoshiyuki Okuyama was already attached as director, with Hokuto Matsumura in the lead, Spoon. as the production company and Toho as the Japanese distributor.

The film subsequently opened in Japan on October 10, 2025. Fuji Television identifies it as an adaptation of Shinkai’s animation and describes a story following different stages of Takaki Tono’s life. GKIDS also confirms that Japanese release date in its own announcements.

On August 22, 2026, GKIDS announced its acquisition of the film’s North American distribution rights. On October 8, it set the theatrical opening for October 23, 2026. These documents establish the sequence of announcements and releases, but they do not explain the specific reason for the roughly one-year gap between markets. Blaming production delays, dubbing or changes to the film would be speculation.

What separates the 2007 original from the 2025 adaptation

The 2007 animation was written and directed by Makoto Shinkai and follows Takaki’s emotional journey through three connected stories, according to GKIDS’ listing for the original film. The 2025 feature is a new live-action production directed by Yoshiyuki Okuyama, with a screenplay credited to Ayako Suzuki in the official English-language production materials.

Hokuto Matsumura plays Takaki Tono, Mitsuki Takahata plays Akari Shinohara and Nana Mori plays Kanae Sumida. Fuji Television’s description spans roughly 18 years of the protagonist’s life. Those details identify the adaptation’s characters and scope, but synopses and press releases alone cannot establish whether its ending matches or changes the animated film’s conclusion.

Does the North American announcement confirm a release in Brazil?

No. GKIDS’ announcement concerns North American theaters and does not provide a Brazilian release date. The official sources consulted do not establish a simultaneous release in other countries either. The company also said more information about its home-entertainment plans would follow, without giving a specific physical or digital release date for the live-action film in that announcement.

So when 2007, 2025 and 2026 appear next to the same title, the crucial distinction is whether the reference points to the original animation, the live-action film’s first Japanese release or its subsequent North American distribution.
