Spoiler warning: the following recap reveals deaths, major plot turns and the complete ending of Anaconda (1997).
In Anaconda (1997), documentary filmmaker Terri Flores’s expedition along the Amazon River is diverted by hunter Paul Serone, who wants to capture a giant snake. The journey ends with Terri, Danny Rich and anthropologist Steven Cale alive. Serone is swallowed by one of the snakes, and Danny delivers the decisive blow in the final showdown. The deaths are not all caused by one animal: the film features at least two adult anacondas in its main attacks.
Directed by Luis Llosa, the film follows a crew originally hoping to document the Shirishama people. The chronology below separates Serone’s actions from the snakes’ attacks and does not confuse this story with other entries in the franchise.
Why the crew travels to the Amazon
Terri Flores is directing a documentary about the Shirishamas, a community the expedition hopes to find deep in the rainforest. She travels with cameraman and childhood friend Danny Rich, anthropologist Steven Cale, producer Denise Kalberg, sound engineer Gary Dixon, narrator Warren Westridge and boat captain Mateo.
Before the expedition is introduced, the opening shows another man trapped aboard his boat by a creature. He shoots himself to avoid being caught. That death matters to the tally: he is not shown being eaten, but dies by suicide during an attack.
Serone’s plan and the takeover of the boat
The filmmakers take in Paul Serone, who presents himself as a knowledgeable local guide and says he can help locate the Shirishamas. In reality, he is hunting a huge anaconda and wants to capture it, even at the passengers’ expense. His arrival turns a research trip into a hunt.
When Cale has a severe reaction after a wasp sting, Serone creates an emergency airway and saves his life, although the anthropologist is left incapacitated. With his chief opponent out of action, Serone asserts control over the crew, redirects the boat and promises Gary a share of a reward to secure his cooperation. Helping Cale does not make Serone’s purpose any safer.
Timeline: the attacks along the river
- Prologue: A man alone on a boat is cornered by a creature and kills himself before it can reach him. The incident establishes the danger, but is not part of Terri’s journey.
- Meeting Serone: The crew accepts the supposed guide. After Cale’s medical emergency, Serone takes control and leaves the documentary route to seek the snake.
- The abandoned boat and Mateo: Investigating another boat uncovers clues that Serone, Mateo and the man from the prologue knew one another. Mateo falls into the water and is killed by an anaconda.
- The bait and Gary: Serone lures the snake with a dead monkey, hoping to capture it. Gary is crushed and swallowed. Terri tries to intervene, but Serone prevents her from shooting; the others subdue and tie him up.
- The waterfall: With the boat stuck, Denise tries to avenge Gary, but Serone strangles her. Another anaconda attack kills Westridge amid an escape and a falling tree. Terri shoots the snake, and Danny knocks Serone into the river after Cale strikes him with a tranquilizer dart.
- The abandoned facility: Serone returns, uses Terri and Danny as bait and is swallowed by the second anaconda. An explosion fails to end the threat; Danny kills the snake with an axe. Terri, Danny and Cale continue and find the Shirishamas.
Who dies and what causes each death
| Character | Fate | Cause or circumstances |
|---|---|---|
| Man in the prologue | Dies from a self-inflicted gunshot | His decision while cornered by a creature |
| Mateo | Dies in the river | Attack by the first anaconda in the main storyline |
| Gary Dixon | Crushed and swallowed | Anaconda lured by Serone’s trap |
| Denise Kalberg | Strangled | Murdered by Paul Serone, not by a snake |
| Warren Westridge | Dies during the waterfall sequence | Anaconda attack and fall during the escape |
| Paul Serone | Swallowed and later regurgitated | Second, larger anaconda during the last trap |
| Terri, Danny and Cale | Survive | The three resume their search for the Shirishamas |
Why the attacks do not all involve the same snake
The key distinction is that Terri shoots the anaconda involved in the waterfall sequence in the head, yet the danger continues. Farther downstream, a second and larger snake appears at the abandoned facility where Serone sets his next trap. Terri’s shot is therefore not simply an ineffective attack on the animal from the last showdown.
The creature in the prologue also threatens a man before Terri’s expedition begins, but that isolated opening does not securely identify which adult snake is present. There is no need to assign an individual snake to an attack the film does not explicitly connect.
The final showdown: Serone’s trap and the fire
After falling into the river during the waterfall confrontation, Serone returns and captures Terri and Danny at an abandoned riverside facility. He ties them up and covers them in animal blood to attract a bigger anaconda, using them as bait. The snake starts constricting the captives, but escapes Serone’s capture attempt and swallows him instead.
Terri and Danny get free. During the chase, Terri discovers a nest of baby snakes and tries to escape through a smokestack. Danny pins down the snake’s tail with a tool and starts a fire that leads to an explosion. Although the burning animal is thrown into the water, it comes back. Danny finally kills it with an axe blow to the head. The fire is therefore not the finishing blow.
Who survives and what the closing scene means
The expedition’s survivors are Terri Flores, Danny Rich and Steven Cale. Cale spends much of the journey unconscious or weakened by his allergic reaction, but survives. Terri and Danny overcome Serone and the snakes, while the other members of the party die along the way.
After the struggle, the three continue along the river and finally encounter the Shirishamas, the original purpose of the documentary. The ending brings the expedition back to its initial mission without undoing the human cost of Serone’s diversion. This recap refers only to the Anaconda film released in 1997.
