Warning: this article contains spoilers for the entire story and ending of The Hangover (2009).

Doug was not kidnapped in Las Vegas. His friends left him asleep on a mattress on the roof of Caesars Palace as a prank, then forgot where they had put him because of the memory blackout caused by the substance Alan had slipped into their drinks. The mattress caught on a hotel statue, visible near the start of the search, had been thrown down by Doug as an attempt to signal for help.

The Hangover is the 2009 comedy directed by Todd Phillips and released in Brazil as Se Beber, Não Case!. The film first shows Phil making a desperate phone call to Doug's bride-to-be, Tracy, with only hours left before the wedding. It then returns to the beginning of the trip and follows Phil, Stu and Alan as they piece together a night they can barely remember.

The trip, the toast and the morning Doug vanishes

Doug travels from Los Angeles to Las Vegas with his friends Phil and Stu and future brother-in-law Alan in a Mercedes borrowed from Tracy's father. They check into Caesars Palace for the bachelor party. On the roof, they toast with Jägermeister. Later, Alan admits he had put a substance into the shots that he believed was ecstasy but was actually Rohypnol, referred to in the story as roofies. He did so without the others' knowledge. After the toast, the story jumps to the following morning: the suite is wrecked, a tiger is in the bathroom, a baby is in a closet, Stu is missing a front tooth and Doug has vanished.

Phil, Stu and Alan's clues, in the order they find them

  1. 1. The suite and the mattress. Along with the tiger, baby and missing tooth, the three discover Doug's mattress is gone. Outside, they spot a mattress caught on a hotel statue. They do not yet understand the signal.
  2. 2. A police cruiser instead of the Mercedes. When they request their car from the valet, a police cruiser arrives. The mix-up shows their night involved the police, but says nothing about where the groom is.
  3. 3. The hospital wristband. Phil notices a hospital ID band on his wrist. At the hospital, a doctor explains the effects of the substance found in his system and says the men had come from a chapel.
  4. 4. The wedding chapel. At The Best Little Chapel, photos and the ceremony organizer establish that Stu married Jade. She is the mother of Tyler, the baby the friends brought back to the suite. Outside, attackers demand to know where a man they are looking for is.
  5. 5. Visiting Jade. The men return Tyler to his mother and learn that Stu gave Jade his family ring during the wedding. Before they can get every answer, they are arrested over the stolen police cruiser.
  6. 6. The police station and the Mercedes. Police explain that the Mercedes was impounded. To get out in time, the trio submit to a humiliating stun-gun demonstration, then collect the car from the impound lot.
  7. 7. The man in the trunk. A naked man bursts from the Mercedes' trunk, attacks the group and escapes. He is later identified as Leslie Chow. After this encounter, Alan confesses that he put the substance in their drinks.
  8. 8. Mike Tyson's tiger. Back at Caesars Palace, the group meets Mike Tyson, who demands his animal back. After taking the tiger to his home, they watch security footage showing Doug still with the group amid the previous night's chaos.
  9. 9. Chow's demand. Chow returns and claims the friends stole casino chips worth $80,000. He says he has Doug and wants the money for the supposed hostage. Unable to find the chips, the friends decide to raise the cash.
  10. 10. Blackjack and the false rescue. Alan uses his ability to count cards to win money at the casino. At the arranged desert exchange, Chow hands over another man: a drug dealer also named Doug, who sold Alan the wrong substance.
  11. 11. The word that solves the mystery. A conversation with this other Doug about roofies reminds Stu of roof. He connects the word to the mattress stuck on the statue and realizes the groom may be on top of the hotel.
  12. 12. Returning to Caesars Palace. The three go up to the roof and find the real Doug alive, disoriented and badly sunburned. Their search ends in the very hotel where it began.

This is the order in which the clues emerge during the search, not a minute-by-minute timeline of the party. The forgotten night is reconstructed through witnesses, footage and scattered memories; the film does not replay every lost hour in full.

What actually happened during the missing night?

Alan triggered the memory loss by tampering with the toast. The events clarified later include the hospital visit, Stu's impromptu marriage to Jade, the stolen police cruiser and the removal of the tiger from Mike Tyson's property. Security footage confirms Doug was still with the others when they took the animal.

The strangest clues also acquire explanations. Tyler is Jade's son; Stu gave her his family ring during their wedding and pulled out his own tooth after accepting Alan's challenge about his skills as a dentist. Leslie Chow ended up locked in the Mercedes' trunk and is searching for missing casino chips.

The encounter with Chow creates the investigation's biggest wrong turn: because he has captured a man called Doug, the trio assume they have finally found the groom. In fact, the hostage is the dealer who supplied Alan with the pills. Photographs recovered at the end reveal additional moments from the night but should not be mistaken for a complete, ordered record of every event.

Why was Doug on the roof, and how did they find him?

The ending reveals that it was a prank. At some point during the night, the friends carried Doug, asleep on his mattress, up to the roof of Caesars Palace so he would wake up there. Under the influence of the substance, they failed to remember the prank the next morning. Chow had not kidnapped the groom.

Doug woke up stranded on the rooftop and threw the mattress down in an attempt to attract attention. It became lodged on a statue, but Phil, Stu and Alan initially treated it as just another bizarre clue. Thinking about roofies, the roof and the mattress finally allows Stu to understand what they saw.

When his friends return to the hotel, Doug is severely sunburned. The scene establishes where he was and explains the prank without recreating every minute of the night. The central misunderstanding was not that they had lost Doug somewhere in the city, but that they had forgotten him a few floors above them.

The ending: the wedding, casino chips and party photos

With the groom found and flights to Los Angeles unavailable, the four rush home in their damaged Mercedes. Doug reveals that he has had Chow's original $80,000 in chips, underlining how the ransom episode was driven by a false lead. Despite arriving late, he manages to marry Tracy.

Stu breaks away from his girlfriend Melissa after their troubled relationship. Before leaving Las Vegas, Jade returns his family ring and they consider meeting again. Near the end, Alan finds the digital camera that recorded the night.

The photos shown during the credits reveal episodes the characters could not remember, including Stu pulling out his tooth and scenes from the party. They complete the visual picture of the chaos, while Doug's whereabouts and the wedding have already been resolved.
