Spoiler warning: this article reveals the entire story and ending of Norbit (2007).

In Norbit (2007), Kate returns to the orphanage where she grew up with Norbit, but her fiancé Deion joins forces with the Latimore family to seize the property and turn it into a nightclub. Norbit discovers the fraud and interrupts the wedding by exposing Deion's past. In the end, Norbit and Kate reunite and take over the orphanage.

Directed by Brian Robbins and distributed by Paramount Pictures, the 2007 comedy features Eddie Murphy as Norbit, Rasputia and Mr. Wong. The recap below follows the childhood friendship, the manipulation of the couple and the final showdown in story order.

Childhood at the Golden Wonton and a promise to Kate

Abandoned as a baby, Norbit Albert Rice is taken in by Mr. Wong, who runs the Golden Wonton restaurant and orphanage. There he meets Kate Thomas, another child growing up at the home. They become inseparable and pretend to marry beneath a large tree, using candy rings. That childhood ceremony becomes a memory that shapes the entire story.

The friends are separated when Kate is adopted and leaves. Years later, school bullies attack Norbit, and Rasputia Latimore comes to his defense. What initially looks like protection develops into an unequal bond: she claims him as her boyfriend, and the relationship eventually leads to marriage in adulthood.

Why Norbit's marriage to Rasputia becomes a trap

As an adult, Norbit works for the construction company run by Rasputia's brothers, Big Jack, Blue and Earl. They also intimidate local shopkeepers through demands and threats. At home, Rasputia monitors, humiliates and assaults her husband, while her brothers reinforce the fear that keeps him from resisting them. The film presents much of this as slapstick, but the relationship it depicts is defined by coercion and violence.

The marriage reaches a breaking point when Norbit discovers Rasputia with her dance instructor, Buster. After an argument, he discards his wedding ring and unexpectedly sees Kate again at a puppet show for the orphanage children. She has returned intending to buy and preserve their old home. There is another obstacle, however: she is engaged to Deion Hughes.

What Deion is really planning to do to Kate

Deion does not share Kate's wish to keep the orphanage operating. Instead, he joins forces with the Latimore brothers to gain control of the property and turn it into an adult nightclub. Rasputia takes part in the manipulation of Norbit and Kate. Kate's intended marriage thus becomes a tool in the scheme, threatening the very place she hopes to protect.

The plot unfolds on three fronts:

  • Deion conceals his financial motives and his partnership with the Latimore family from Kate.
  • The brothers pressure Norbit into giving Kate documents, disguising a transfer involving the restaurant's liquor license as routine paperwork.
  • Norbit and Kate's renewed closeness becomes a threat to the scheme because it might prompt her to question her fiancé and the papers she signs.

The kiss, Rasputia's threat and the painful separation

Norbit and Kate begin spending time together again with help from people in town. Their old friendship returns, and Kate even teaches him how to ride a bicycle. During a rehearsal for her wedding to Deion, they kiss. The moment makes Kate reconsider the marriage ahead of her, but Rasputia witnesses their growing closeness.

Rasputia threatens to hurt Kate if Norbit sees her again. When Kate comes looking for answers about the paperwork and Deion's behavior, she finds Norbit confined to the basement of his house. To keep her safe, he pretends to despise her and says deliberately hurtful things. Rasputia adds to the lie, convincing Kate that Norbit has been deceiving her. His attempt to protect her backfires: Kate loses faith in her friend, and Norbit considers leaving town.

The investigation into Deion changes Norbit's mind

Before he leaves, Norbit receives information from a private investigator he previously hired. The records point to four marriages over six years and roughly $300,000 gained through divorce settlements. That history gives Norbit a concrete reason to suspect Deion intends to exploit Kate.

The Latimore brothers reveal the extent of the operation and lock Norbit up again to prevent him from warning her. He escapes and heads toward the wedding on a bicycle. The skill Kate taught him now becomes his way of reaching her. People who support Norbit also help delay the ceremony.

The interrupted wedding and the collapse of the con

Norbit reaches the church before Kate marries Deion and exposes both the scheme against the orphanage and the groom's past. His letter about the divorces is unreadable after falling into water, so at first he cannot convincingly prove what he says. But he has invited Deion's former wives, who arrive with children and confront him. Exposed, Deion flees, and the wedding is called off.

The Latimore brothers retaliate by attacking Norbit. Townspeople who once feared the family step forward to defend him, while Rasputia pushes toward him. Mr. Wong ends the confrontation with an outrageous intervention: he strikes Rasputia with a harpoon, sending her running. Her brothers leave town as well. The scene marks the public defeat of the people who controlled Norbit and intimidated the community.

Ending explained: Do Norbit and Kate end up together?

Yes. With Deion exposed and the Latimores driven away, Kate reconciles with Norbit. The two take over the Golden Wonton and genuinely marry beneath the same tree where they played at being married as children. The story comes full circle: a place once associated with separation becomes the center of the life they build together.

The film saves one more joke for its villains. The closing narration says, as a rumor, that Rasputia and her brothers may have moved to Mexico to open a nightclub, where she performs. It is the movie's final gag, not another scheme against Kate.

What the ending means beyond the jokes

Two conflicts run through the film: whether Norbit can choose his own future and whether Kate can save the place where they grew up. Deion and the Latimores see the orphanage as a business opportunity; Kate wants to preserve it as a home for other children. Norbit can stop the fraud only when he overcomes his fear and exposes the scheme in front of the town.

The return to the tree wedding completes the childhood storyline, while the townspeople's intervention reverses the Latimores' former hold over the community. The resolution is about more than Norbit winning Kate's affection: he regains the freedom to decide, and the orphanage stays with someone committed to caring for it.
