No. In updated versions of Baldur’s Gate 3, Minthara no longer needs the “Temporarily Hostile” condition to be recruited while you protect the tieflings. The route is to knock her unconscious with a non-lethal attack in Act 1, resolve the Emerald Grove conflict in the refugees’ favor, and meet her again in Act 2. Stealing an item to trigger temporary hostility is advice from older guides, not a current requirement.
Spoiler warning: the sections below contain light spoilers about Act 1 and Act 2 locations and objectives, but do not reveal the game's ending.
Where did the Temporarily Hostile rule come from?
With Patch 5, released on November 30, 2023, Larian allowed Minthara to appear at Moonrise Towers after being knocked out in Act 1. In that early implementation, players circulated a specific workaround: provoke her until she became Temporarily Hostile before using non-lethal attacks. This procedure became embedded in guides written at the time, although the official Patch 5 notes did not establish it as a general rule.
| Update | What changed | Practical consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Patch 5, Nov. 30, 2023 | Minthara knocked out in Act 1 could return at Moonrise Towers. | Opened a route to spare her without supporting the grove raid. |
| Patch 6, Feb. 16, 2024 | Larian expanded valid knockout methods. Community documentation records the removal of the temporary-hostility requirement. | You no longer need to steal or deliberately trigger a “temporary” fight before knocking her out. |
| Patch 7, Sep. 5, 2024 | Larian fixed the flow so a knocked-out Minthara would go to Moonrise Towers. | Her return no longer hinged on the narrower circumstances described in early Patch 5 guides. |
| Patch 8, Apr. 15, 2025 | Further fixes made her arrival at Moonrise Towers more reliable. | The non-lethal recruitment route received additional stability improvements. |
There is an important distinction: “Temporarily Hostile” describes a character's combat attitude, while “Knocked Out” describes the result of the encounter. Patch 6 does not enumerate every internal condition it removed; the explanation that the old requirement was dropped comes from Minthara's community documentation, considered alongside Larian's official expansion of valid methods.
How to recruit Minthara without killing the tieflings
- In Act 1, choose to protect Emerald Grove and its refugees. Do not join the goblin invasion or complete a raid against the grove.
- Before fighting Minthara inside the Shattered Sanctum, or while defending the grove during a raid, make a manual save. You do not need to make her Temporarily Hostile.
- Enable “Toggle Non-Lethal Attacks” under the party's passives. This setting applies across controllable party members, but does not make spells or ranged attacks safe finishing blows.
- Lower Minthara's hit points and deliver the final blow with a melee weapon attack or an unarmed strike. Confirm she is unconscious, not dead, and avoid fire, poison, hazardous surfaces, or extra damage that might kill her.
- Protect the tieflings: if you are tackling the leaders in the goblin camp, also deal with Priestess Gut and Dror Ragzlin, and complete the refugees' quest before traveling to another region.
- In Act 2, reach Moonrise Towers, follow Minthara's situation, and help her escape imprisonment. Only then can you invite her to camp as a companion.
Which choices can still ruin this route?
- Accidentally killing Minthara: a spell, arrow, or ongoing damage can finish her off even with non-lethal attacks enabled. The knockout blow must be melee.
- Destroying or abandoning Emerald Grove: supporting the massacre defeats the goal of saving the refugees. Traveling to Rosymorn Monastery Trail or leaving through Grymforge before resolving their quest can also complete it automatically with fatal consequences for the tieflings.
- Mistaking a knockout for immediate recruitment: Minthara does not permanently join the party in Act 1. Recruitment requires the meeting and rescue in Act 2.
- Delaying her rescue until after defeating Ketheric Thorm: according to the Patch 5 notes, leaving her alive in prison after Ketheric's death can cause her to die.
Do you still have to avoid a Long Rest or steal in front of her?
Neither trick should be treated as a universal requirement. The “Temporarily Hostile” condition and the old advice to defeat all three leaders before taking a Long Rest belong to earlier guide versions. Patch 7 made Minthara's return after a knockout more reliable. You still need to finish the refugees' quest before crossing a regional transition that ends it.
If Minthara does not show up in Act 2, first check whether she actually died, whether the grove quest was completed, and whether the campaign uses mods or a save made on an older version. A game update does not necessarily undo every outcome already stored in a save file. In that situation, the safer option is to return to a save from before the decisive encounter, if one exists.
