Baldur’s Gate 3: What Happens When You Lose in Honour Mode?

Lost in Baldur’s Gate 3 Honour Mode? Learn how continuing in Custom Mode works, what happens to the golden die, and which save and combat rules remain.

In Baldur’s Gate 3, a total party defeat in Honour Mode ends the run’s eligibility for completing that difficulty, but it does not force you to delete your campaign. The game shows a summary of the journey and offers the option to continue the same adventure in Custom Mode. If you continue, you can still see the rest of the story, but that campaign can no longer earn Honour Mode’s golden 20-sided die.

The key distinction is between losing reward eligibility and losing all progress. The special combat rules and save system also matter: continuing does not automatically turn the run into a regular playthrough with unrestricted reloading.

What counts as a loss in Honour Mode?

The deciding point is a party Game Over, when no member remains able to keep the adventure going or recover the group. One companion falling does not, by itself, mean the campaign is over. After defeat, Larian says the game displays statistics about the attempt, including how long you lasted and how far you progressed, before offering the option to continue.

Honour Mode arrived with Patch 5 on November 30, 2023, as a challenge beyond Tactician: bosses gained Legendary Actions and other changes, while the ability to reload older saves to undo decisions was restricted. The idea is to make choices and mistakes consequential.

What stays and what do you lose after Game Over?

FeatureWhat happens if you continue
Campaign, characters and choicesYou can continue the adventure in the same save, now under Custom Mode; restarting the story is not mandatory.
Validity of the Honour Mode attemptIt ends. Continuing does not restore the status of a run completed without defeat.
Golden die and associated achievementThe defeated run is no longer eligible for the Honour Mode reward, even if you subsequently finish the story.
Legendary Actions and combat rulesThey can remain active under the inherited Honour ruleset. A change in the mode label to Custom does not necessarily mean ordinary combat.
Single-save restrictionAccording to player reports from March 2026, it remains enforced in the converted run and cannot be disabled through normal settings.
Other difficulty settingsSome Custom controls can be adjusted, such as enemy parameters, resting resources and character strength; the ruleset and single-save option remain locked in this situation.

The ability to continue and the loss of the reward are explained by Larian itself. The finer details of which controls remain locked or editable after Game Over come from players reporting their experiences on March 20 and 21, 2026. This distinction matters: those accounts are not an exhaustive official list of every interface option.

Can I turn off single-save or make the game easier after losing?

For a campaign that started in Honour Mode and was converted after defeat, March 2026 reports indicate that single-save and the Honour ruleset remain locked. Do not assume you can create multiple rollback points in that same adventure. Nor is there a normal menu option to reinstate the original, officially eligible run.

That does not mean every control is fixed. In the same discussion, players reported being able to change Custom difficulty options, including enemy aggression, camp supply costs and character power. Because these are community observations rather than a documented guarantee across every platform, check which controls are enabled in your installed version before planning any adjustments.

How can you keep Honour combat rules without risking an official run?

Since Patch 7, released in September 2024, you can start a new Custom Mode campaign and select the Honour ruleset in the rules dropdown. This allows the bosses’ special mechanics without making the campaign an official reward-eligible Honour run.

  1. When starting a new campaign, choose Custom Mode.
  2. In the ruleset dropdown, choose the Honour ruleset. Set the other difficulty parameters to the challenge you want.
  3. If you want the option to reload saves, leave single-save disabled. This will not grant the golden die or the achievement reserved for a valid Honour Mode completion.

Selecting only the Honour ruleset does not necessarily match all other difficulty settings to the original mode. To approximate Tactician’s intensity, also review combat, economy and resting options. Make these decisions when creating the campaign, because not every structural setting can be changed later.

Why do older answers about Honour Mode disagree?

When Patch 5 launched in 2023, the usual way to experience Honour-exclusive rules was to begin in Honour Mode itself. Patch 7 in 2024 added those rules to Custom Mode at the start of a new adventure. In 2025, Larian also addressed interface bugs that offered the wrong difficulty choices after Game Over or failed to save difficulty adjustments made after defeat.

Patch 6 had already distinguished voluntary switching from other difficulties into Custom from the restriction on Honour Mode. And Hotfix #36, issued March 26, 2026, addressed technical issues, including a Mac character-creation problem when starting in Honour Mode, without announcing a change to the defeat rules. That is why 2023 answers, post-Patch-7 instructions and experiences involving mods should not be treated as interchangeable.

What should you do if your run has already ended?

If your priority is seeing the characters’ stories through, choose to continue and review the Custom Mode options available. If you want the golden die, you will need to start another eligible Honour Mode attempt. Either way, handle the original campaign save with care: converting the run does not create a history of save slots that can undo defeats or decisions.
