Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 does not pick up David Martinez and Lucy Kushinada's romance where it left off. It is a standalone, ten-episode story with new characters in Night City. Netflix has announced an October 20, 2026 premiere, a date also confirmed by CD PROJEKT RED. The franchise's Brazilian website calls the new installment Cyberpunk: Mercenários 2.
The number 2 identifies another production set in the world of Cyberpunk 2077, but it does not mean that the 2022 anime's ending will be undone. This explainer reflects official announcements and interviews available as of October 19, 2026, before the premiere.
Spoiler warning: the following paragraphs reveal the ending of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (2022), but do not disclose events from Edgerunners 2.
How does David and Lucy's story end?
At the end of the 2022 anime, David tries to rescue Lucy as excessive cybernetic enhancements push him toward cyberpsychosis. The mission culminates in a confrontation with Adam Smasher, who is associated with Arasaka. David makes Lucy's escape possible, but dies in the fight. CD PROJEKT RED itself reaffirmed his death when it introduced the new project on July 4, 2025.
Lucy survives and reaches the Moon, a destination that became central to their relationship. She fulfills that dream without David beside her. Reading this ending as an expression of grief and longing is a dramatic interpretation; the sequence does not establish that David secretly survived.
David's journey therefore ends, while what Lucy does after her trip remains unexplained in the material discussed here. Leaving her future open is different from announcing a continuation centered on her.
Why is Edgerunners 2 a standalone story?
Netflix and CD PROJEKT RED describe the new anime as a standalone story with ten episodes and its own conflicts. It retains Night City, its megacorporations, and its mercenary underworld, but changes the central cast. It is a new plot in the same universe, not a remake or a direct continuation of David and Lucy's closing scenes.
The production still has creative links: animation studio TRIGGER returns, Kai Ikarashi takes over as director, Kanno Ichigo leads character design, and Bartosz Sztybor and Masahiko Otsuka remain involved in storytelling. Their return is not evidence that the original characters will also return.
| Type of connection | What is confirmed | What is not confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Story | A new, standalone ten-episode plot | A direct continuation of David and Lucy's romance |
| Setting | Night City and the world of Cyberpunk 2077 | A literal adaptation of the game's campaign |
| Characters | A new group featuring Weak, D, Roman, and Talia | Lucy's return or David's resurrection |
Who are the new series' main characters?
One of the announced central figures is Weak, formerly known as King, a veteran mercenary who has lost his status and must now live without cybernetic implants. Another is D, a nomadic Snake Nation netrunner hunting the person responsible for destroying his clan. Official descriptions place their intersecting paths within a story about revenge, family, and legacy.
The franchise website also introduces Roman, a young cinephile who wants to document real stories in a city dominated by braindance, and Talia, connected to the Maelstrom gang after a childhood in the corporate world. These are officially revealed starting points, not an account of what happens across the episodes.
How does David's story still influence the creators?
In an interview with GamesRadar+ ahead of the premiere, showrunner Bartosz Sztybor described a hypothetical writing exercise: what would David be like years later if he had survived? That idea helped inspire Weak. It is not a revelation that David is alive within the official continuity.
Sztybor contrasted the first protagonist's rise with the downfall of a once-famous figure in the second series. The connection is therefore thematic: how Night City turns ambition, celebrity, and failure into violent stories. Creative inspiration does not amount to the literal return of the character who inspired it.
How is the anime connected to Cyberpunk 2077?
Both series belong to the world of Cyberpunk 2077, sharing the city and elements such as implants, gangs, mercenaries, and corporate power. This shared setting does not turn Edgerunners 2 into a direct adaptation of V's campaign or confirm the appearance of any particular characters from the game.
Anime and game references already cross over: Cyberpunk 2077's update 1.6, called the Edgerunners Update, added secrets and equipment inspired by the first anime. This is a documented connection between the media, but it cannot establish which cameos, scenes, or items will appear in the second series.
Will Lucy appear in Edgerunners 2?
In promotional materials examined through October 19, 2026, Lucy has not been announced among the new story's central figures. David has likewise not been presented as a protagonist or survivor. The actors who portrayed both characters took part in the 2025 Anime Expo announcement panel to discuss the original series, not to confirm new roles.
A standalone story does not, by definition, rule out references or brief appearances. But speculation about Lucy's return is not confirmation of an appearance. The announcements reviewed do not explain what happens to her after her trip to the Moon.
When does it premiere, and do you need to watch season one?
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is scheduled to premiere on October 20, 2026, exclusively on Netflix. The franchise's Brazilian website confirms the date and ten-episode length. The official sources reviewed do not specify a Brazilian release time, Brazilian Portuguese dubbing for the new series, or a detailed episode availability schedule.
According to the producers' presentation, viewers can follow the new premise without knowing David's entire adventure. Watching the 2022 anime helps reveal the thematic parallels, but is not the same as a mandatory narrative prerequisite. Analysis of particular scenes, returning characters, or consequences must wait for the episodes actually shown.
