Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 (titled Stranger Things: Histórias de 85 by Netflix in Brazil) takes place between Seasons 2 and 3 of the original live-action series. Its first animated season begins in January 1985, while its second moves toward Valentine’s Day of the same year. Netflix confirms this chronological placement, but that does not automatically make every animated event a mandatory part of the live-action continuity.
The distinction matters: where the animated show fits on the timeline is established; how strictly its stories must count as canon remains more qualified, especially in comments from showrunner Eric Robles.
The chronological order of Stranger Things and Tales From ’85
Minor spoiler warning: the sequence below mentions the original Season 2 ending and the animated show’s opening premise, but does not reveal the endings of either animated season.
- Late 1984, Stranger Things Season 2: the group faces the events surrounding Hawkins Lab. Eleven closes the gate to the Upside Down, and the season ends with the school’s winter Snow Ball.
- January 1985, Tales From ’85 Season 1: Netflix explicitly places the animated opening in this month, with the friends reunited in a snow-covered Hawkins. The previous gate is closed, yet another paranormal mystery emerges.
- Early 1985, Tales From ’85 Season 2: the story picks up immediately after the animated first-season finale and approaches Valentine’s Day on February 14. This is the animated show’s second season, not Season 3 of the original series.
- Summer 1985, Stranger Things Season 3: the live-action story returns to Hawkins months later, around Starcourt Mall and the events leading up to the US July 4 holiday.
The year in the title Tales From ’85 refers to the fictional setting, not its release year. The animated series premiered on Netflix on April 23, 2026, with ten episodes in Season 1; Season 2 arrived on September 17, 2026. The live-action and animated shows have separate season numbering.
What is confirmed, and why is canon still debated?
Netflix presents the animation as a story within the Stranger Things universe, positioned between Seasons 2 and 3, with Matt and Ross Duffer serving as executive producers. That establishes the intended setting and the creators’ involvement, but does not by itself settle whether every new animated adventure is an unquestionable event in the live-action narrative.
In an April 2026 interview with Radio Times, Robles explained that the team wants to preserve the starting point of Season 3, while acknowledging that major new creature-filled adventures cannot fit perfectly into the period as depicted in the original series. His solution is to let the animation stand as its own adventure without reshaping the main story. In another interview, reported by What’s on Netflix, Robles also suggested that the entire animated show could be removed from the timeline without damaging the central narrative.
That is why some coverage uses “soft canon” or “optional canon.” Those labels are journalistic interpretations, not a formal Netflix canon classification. The careful distinction is this: Tales From ’85 has a confirmed timeline slot; the complete, compulsory incorporation of each event into main-series canon has not been established to the same standard.
What watch order makes sense?
For chronological viewing, watch the first two seasons of the live-action original, followed by both seasons of Tales From ’85, then live-action Season 3. If you prefer the story as originally released, you can also watch all five seasons of the main series first and approach the animation as a separate expansion of the 1985 gap.
The second option does not require assuming that every animated adventure occurred exactly as shown within the main continuity. That is the difference between an official chronological placement and mandatory canon. This guide addresses the location of the two animated seasons, not a breakdown of their endings.
