Spoiler warning: this article reveals events from the first Dune novel (1965), provides context from Dune Messiah (1969), and discusses the ending of Dune: Part Two. It does not present events from the novels as confirmed scenes in the unreleased third film, as of October 21, 2026.

Alia Atreides is Paul's younger sister, the daughter of Lady Jessica and Duke Leto. In Frank Herbert's first Dune novel, she is born during the story and takes part in the final confrontation while still a child. In Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part Two (2024), Alia remains in Jessica's womb, although Paul sees an adult version of her in a vision, played by Anya Taylor-Joy. The actress is confirmed for Dune: Part Three, but the new adaptation's choices should not be confused with events from the books.

Why is Alia considered pre-born?

Jessica is pregnant when she drinks the Water of Life during the ritual that makes her a Reverend Mother among the Fremen. The process gives her access to her female ancestors' memories. Because Alia is still developing in the womb, she also receives this awareness and these memories before forming an ordinary childhood identity. This condition sets her apart from Paul, even though both belong to House Atreides and are connected to the Bene Gesserit's plans.

In the novels, the Bene Gesserit fear children born with ancestral voices and memories because a personality that has not fully formed can struggle to resist their influence. That fear explains the derogatory term Abomination applied to cases such as Alia's. The label expresses the order's apprehension, not a medical diagnosis or proof that the character is controlled by another consciousness from birth.

What does Alia do in the first book?

The 1965 novel makes a time jump of roughly two years after Paul and Jessica join the Fremen. As a result, Alia is born and appears as a small child who can speak and act with an awareness that unsettles adults. The contrast between her young appearance and inherited knowledge is central to her literary introduction.

In the final confrontation, Alia kills her grandfather, Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, using a poisoned gom jabbar needle. The character also becomes associated with the name Saint Alia of the Knife. This decisive role was not simply left out of the film adaptation: Villeneuve changed the timeline and gave the Baron's death to Paul.

Why doesn't Dune: Part Two show a young Alia?

The 2024 film does not preserve the novel's multi-year jump. Jessica remains pregnant throughout the sequel while Alia communicates with her during gestation. After Paul drinks the Water of Life, he sees a future version of his sister with Anya Taylor-Joy's face. At the end of the adaptation, Paul, rather than Alia, kills Baron Harkonnen.

Co-writer Jon Spaihts told Inverse in March 2024 that the team considered where to place the time jump, but preferred to keep the emotional impact of House Atreides' fall immediate and to avoid the difficulty of presenting a small child speaking like an adult. In a Rotten Tomatoes interview, Denis Villeneuve said he had chosen Taylor-Joy before filming Part Two and designed her appearance as a bridge to the next story. Those are comments about the creative process, not descriptions of unreleased scenes.

What has Anya Taylor-Joy confirmed about Alia in Part Three?

In an interview published by TODAY on March 18, 2026, Taylor-Joy described Alia as having extraordinary perception and the voices of many generations inside her head. In the actress's account, the character is never entirely alone in a conversation. This helps explain the subjective burden of ancestral memories, but it does not establish any particular scene in the film.

At the publicity event covered by Omelete on March 17, the actress also stressed Alia's devotion to Paul: he is the person who makes her feel most understood, having connected with her even before her birth. The comment clarifies how Taylor-Joy interprets the siblings' bond. It does not establish that every event in Dune Messiah will be filmed exactly as written.

Does Part Three use the same time jump as Dune Messiah?

Not exactly, judging by the official outline. Dune Messiah, Herbert's second novel, begins about 12 years after the events of the first book. Warner Bros.' synopsis, however, places Dune: Part Three nearly two decades after Paul took control of the Imperium. Those are different time references, on top of the earlier adaptation change that kept Alia unborn at the end of Part Two.

Official materials confirm Taylor-Joy in the cast and present Paul as an emperor facing the consequences of his rule. They do not amount to a full account of Alia's fate in the film. Relationships, conflicts and later events from the novels must therefore remain clearly identified as book material until the adaptation is released.

When is Dune: Part Three coming out?

Warner Bros. Discovery Brazil lists Dune: Part Three for December 17, 2026 in Brazilian theaters. Warner Bros. gives December 18 for North America and international openings starting December 16, depending on the territory. These are announced dates and may change with release schedules.

The key distinction for following Alia is straightforward: the novel gives her a physical presence and a decisive action as a very young child; the second film retains her awareness but changes the age at which audiences meet her. Taylor-Joy will portray Alia in the third installment, but her cinematic path should be described only through what the film and its creators actually reveal.
