Final Fantasy XIV on Nintendo Switch 2 requires a separate subscription, even for players already paying to play on PC, PlayStation, or Xbox. The special launch-time fee waiver ended on September 7, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. in each region. From September 8, the 30 days included with an eligible Starter Edition or Complete Edition registration began to apply. Once those 30 days expire, payment is required to keep playing the full version on the console.
The 50% subscription discount is for players who maintain an active, paid FFXIV subscription on another platform. The deciding factor is whether they still have valid game time on that other platform when the Switch 2 fee is charged. Having only another edition’s 30-day free-play period does not qualify, as explained in Square Enix’s September 2 notice.
From the launch waiver to the first payment
- August 4, 2026: FFXIV launches for Nintendo Switch 2. Square Enix temporarily waives subscription fees for the full version to support server stability.
- September 7, 11:59 p.m.: the promotional waiver ends, based on the time applicable to each region.
- Starting September 8: the 30-day free-play entitlement attached to the first eligible Switch 2 Starter Edition or Complete Edition registration begins to apply.
- After each player’s 30 days expire: a paid subscription becomes necessary to keep accessing the full version. Players who set up payment in advance have FFXIV Coins deducted when their free time ends.
For players whose 30-day entitlement started on September 8, the transition to paid service falls around October 8, 2026. This is a calculated reference point, not the same billing date for every account: eligible registrations completed later have their own entitlement periods. Check the expiry date displayed for your service account before purchasing coins or scheduling a renewal.
The included 30 days apply to the first eligible platform-license registration on a given service account. Buying another edition for a platform already registered does not repeatedly grant another free month. The Free Trial, meanwhile, remains free with its restrictions. It is distinct from the temporarily fee-waived full version.
Who qualifies for 50% off, and when does it not apply?
The discount reduces the additional Switch 2 subscription fee, not the subscription already paid for elsewhere or the game’s purchase price. Square Enix determines eligibility when the Switch 2 subscription payment actually takes place.
| Status when charged | 50% off? | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Paid subscription with valid remaining time on another platform, under the same service account | Yes | Active game time exists outside Switch 2. |
| Only another platform’s 30-day free-play period is active | No | A 30-day free period does not meet the discount requirement. |
| The other platform’s paid subscription expired before the charge | No | The qualifying condition is no longer met at billing. |
| The player subscribes only on Switch 2 | No | There is no other active subscription to qualify. |
For example, a player paying for FFXIV on PC may set up Switch 2 billing during the console’s 30 included days. The discount will apply only if valid PC game time still remains when the coins are deducted. If that time ends earlier, the reduced rate should not be assumed. Eligibility must also be considered at later renewals.
Existing players should register the Switch 2 license under the same Service Account that holds their characters and subscription. Creating a different service account prevents character sharing and does not make subscriptions belonging to separate service accounts interchangeable. Check the selected account before linking it to a Nintendo user profile: Square Enix says this link cannot be undone.
Nintendo Switch 2 subscription prices
The official price table uses FFXIV Coins for the Nintendo Switch 2-specific subscription, without translating the balances into Brazilian reais. These are virtual-currency amounts, not universal Nintendo eShop cash prices.
| Tier | Length | Regular cost | With 50% discount |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry | 30 days | 1,300 FFXIV Coins | 650 FFXIV Coins |
| Standard | 30 days | 1,500 FFXIV Coins | 750 FFXIV Coins |
| Standard | 90 days | 4,200 FFXIV Coins | 2,100 FFXIV Coins |
The amount actually paid in cash depends on the coin bundles sold through the Nintendo eShop region linked to the Nintendo Account and on any price changes. Treating one Coin as having a fixed cash exchange rate, or assuming a coin bundle will cost exactly half as much in reais, would be misleading. Square Enix also notes that subscription fees can change under the game’s user agreement.
When FFXIV Coins are actually deducted
The Switch 2 subscription is paid using FFXIV Coins purchased from Nintendo eShop and managed through the Mog Station. If payment is configured while the full version’s included 30 days are still running, the automatic coin deduction takes place when that free period ends, not necessarily when payment is set up. Discount eligibility is checked for that charge.
The Switch 2 subscription then uses automatic renewal while the coin balance is sufficient. If there are not enough FFXIV Coins, automatic renewal stops and the player must renew game time. Switch 2 coins purchased from Nintendo eShop cannot be replaced with coins bought for Xbox. The Nintendo and Square Enix account regions must also be compatible.
Nintendo Switch Online is not required to play FFXIV. That does not remove the separate Final Fantasy XIV subscription requirement for the full version. These terms were checked on October 22, 2026 and remain subject to Square Enix changes and regional account conditions.
