If you already own Invincible Universe Compendium, Vol. 1, you do not need to buy Atom Eve and Rex Splode's origin miniseries or either Guarding the Globe trade paperback separately just to read the same stories. Image Comics' edition collects 29 issues: Invincible Presents: Atom Eve #1-2, Invincible Presents: Atom Eve & Rex Splode #1-3, both Guarding the Globe series #1-6 each, and Invincible Universe #1-12.
The key distinction is between the Universe Compendium and the three Invincible Compendiums that follow Mark Grayson's main storyline. They complement one another; they are not four consecutively numbered volumes of the same collection.
Which trade paperbacks duplicate material you already own?
This comparison concerns stories, not covers, prices, or printing extras. The first collected volume can be titled Rexsplode, while the original miniseries spells the character's name Rex Splode. Both refer to the same five origin-story issues included in the larger book.
| Separately sold trade paperback | Issues included in Universe Compendium | Would buying both duplicate stories? |
|---|---|---|
| Invincible Presents: Atom Eve & Rexsplode, Vol. 1 | Invincible Presents: Atom Eve #1-2; Atom Eve & Rex Splode #1-3 | Yes. All five issues are in the Compendium. |
| Guarding the Globe, Vol. 1 | Guarding the Globe, first miniseries, #1-6 | Yes. All six issues are in the Compendium. |
| Guarding the Globe, Vol. 2 | Guarding the Globe, second series, #1-6 | Yes. These six additional issues are in the Compendium. |
| Invincible Universe, Vol. 1 | Invincible Universe #1-6 | Yes. All six issues are in the Compendium. |
| Invincible Universe, Vol. 2 | Invincible Universe #7-12 | Yes. The series’ final six issues are in the Compendium. |
The total is 2 + 3 + 6 + 6 + 12 = 29 issues. Pay attention to the numbering of Guarding the Globe: its second volume also starts at #1. These are not reprints of the same six issues, but two distinct six-issue series, and the larger book contains both.
What does each part cover?
Atom Eve and Rex Splode: the two Invincible Presents: Atom Eve issues tell Samantha Eve Wilkins' origin story. The three Atom Eve & Rex Splode issues explore more of that past and the characters' connection. The Compendium's contents do not list a separate Rex Splode solo miniseries under that name.
Guarding the Globe: the first miniseries follows Brit as he assembles an international Guardians of the Globe team while Invincible is away during the Viltrumite War. The second series returns to the team for new missions. Distinguishing these two runs matters when shopping for individual issues that both bear the number #1.
Invincible Universe: its 12 issues shift attention to other heroes and the fallout from developments in the main comic, expanding the shared setting. The series was originally collected into two trade paperbacks containing #1-6 and #7-12. Both are included in the Universe Compendium.
How does it differ from the three Invincible Compendiums?
| Book | Main contents listed by Image Comics | Relationship to spin-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Invincible Compendium, Vol. 1 | Invincible #0-47 | Main series, without the five spin-off issue groups listed above. |
| Invincible Compendium, Vol. 2 | Invincible #48-96 | Main-series continuation, not the spin-off collection. |
| Invincible Compendium, Vol. 3 | Invincible #97-144 | Conclusion of the main series, not the Universe Compendium. |
| Invincible Universe Compendium, Vol. 1 | 29 issues across five spin-off groups | Supplementary Atom Eve, Rex Splode, Guarding the Globe and Invincible Universe material. |
Owning only the three Invincible Compendium volumes does not automatically give you these 29 spin-off issues. Conversely, the Universe Compendium alone does not replace the 144 regular issues of Invincible. The table reflects the principal contents announced for the referenced paperback editions, without assuming that every format or reprint has identical bonus material.
What would still need a separate purchase?
If you only want the specified Atom Eve, Rex Splode, Guarding the Globe and Invincible Universe stories, you do not need additional individual issues from these five sequences. Other shared-universe series, including Tech Jacket, Brit and The Astounding Wolf-Man, are not listed as complete runs among these 29 issues. A character's appearance or mention does not mean that their solo comics are collected. The same caution applies to later titles bearing the Invincible Universe name, such as Battle Beast: the 2023 Compendium has a fixed contents list.
When should you read it?
Comic Book Herald's reading guide recommends starting with Invincible's early chapters before Eve and Rex's retrospective origin stories. It places Invincible Universe #1-12 after Invincible #102, which is in the third main Compendium. Having all the material in one physical book makes collecting simpler, but it does not mean you must read that book from first page to last before continuing Mark's main storyline.
How can you check an edition and avoid buying duplicates?
This comparison uses the English-language Invincible Universe Compendium TP, Vol. 1, released by Image Comics on June 7, 2023, listed at 640 pages by the publisher, with print ISBN 9781534399969. The digital edition has eISBN 9781534398078. For a Brazilian edition, translation, reprint, or different format, check the issue list in the publisher's listing and in the book itself: a similar title, page count, or cover image alone does not establish identical contents or extras.
