Spawn Universe reading order: where to start with King Spawn, Gunslinger Spawn and The Scorched

A short reading path starting with Spawn’s Universe #1, followed by three distinct spin-offs and their first collected volumes, without confusing a useful recommendation with strict continuity.

Arte sombria de quadrinhos com anti-herói de capa vermelha e olhos verdes no centro, pistoleiro de chapéu à esquerda e equipe armada à direita diante de uma cidade em ruínas.

To enter the expanded Spawn universe without reading hundreds of comics, the most useful starting point is Spawn’s Universe #1. Then choose the opening arc of King Spawn to follow the main character and his infernal power struggle, Gunslinger Spawn for the gunslinger stranded outside his own era, or The Scorched for a team-based story. Each first collected volume contains issues #1 through #6 of its respective series.

If you want to sample all three branches, a practical sequence is Spawn’s Universe #1 → King Spawn Vol. 1 → Gunslinger Spawn Vol. 1 → The Scorched Vol. 1. This is an editorial recommendation designed to introduce their different approaches, not an official scene-by-scene continuity order.

What is the starting point for the expanded universe?

Image Comics published Spawn’s Universe #1 on June 23, 2021, as the introductory special for the expansion created by Todd McFarlane. The issue opens up story paths involving Spawn, Gunslinger Spawn, She-Spawn and Medieval Spawn, setting up characters who would appear in their own titles.

The new series did not replace the original ongoing Spawn comic. They share a universe and can intersect, but each foregrounds different characters and kinds of stories. Starting with the subject that interests you is therefore more useful than treating the entire continuity as required reading.

King Spawn, Gunslinger Spawn or The Scorched: which should you pick?

SeriesWhat it focuses onWhere to start
King SpawnAl Simmons, threats linked to Hell, and the struggle surrounding the idea of a king Spawn. This is the branch most centered on the main character.King Spawn #1 or King Spawn Vol. 1 (issues #1–6).
Gunslinger SpawnA gunslinger connected to the Old West who finds himself in the modern world, dealing with revenge and survival.Gunslinger Spawn #1 or Gunslinger Spawn Vol. 1 (issues #1–6).
The ScorchedA team story involving Hellspawn-related characters and the struggle between Heaven, Hell and Earth, with a lineup that can change. The Scorched #1 or The Scorched Vol. 1 (issues #1–6).

These are not three names for the same storyline. King Spawn expands Spawn’s own journey, Gunslinger Spawn follows its own lead, and The Scorched brings together characters such as Spawn, She-Spawn, Gunslinger, Redeemer and Medieval Spawn. Each book establishes its premise in its first issue.

Four reading paths, from the shortest to the broadest

  1. I want the most direct route into Al Simmons: read Spawn’s Universe #1, then King Spawn #1–6. Turn to the main Spawn series later if you want additional context.
  2. I want supernatural Western action: read the special and move to Gunslinger Spawn #1–6. Its first arc introduces the time-displaced character.
  3. I want to see the team come together: read the special, go through Gunslinger Spawn #1–6 to better know that team member, then read The Scorched #1–6. The Gunslinger detour is a contextual suggestion, not a publisher-imposed prerequisite.
  4. I want to try all three approaches: read the special, then the first volumes of King Spawn, Gunslinger Spawn and The Scorched, in that order. You do not need to alternate individual issues to complete this introductory route.

Entry-level editions and the box set containing the opening stories

The first collected volumes of King Spawn, Gunslinger Spawn and The Scorched each gather six issues. For trade-paperback readers, that means three books and one special rather than a marathon through the main ongoing series.

Image also lists the Spawn’s Universe Box Set, released on November 29, 2023, containing a new printing of the special and the three first volumes. The box set is a useful reference for identifying the complete introductory package, not a guarantee of stock, price or a locally published edition. Check language, contents and availability with your country’s publisher or retailer.

Do you need to read hundreds of issues of the original series?

Not for this minimum reading route. Spawn began in 1992, and the spin-offs draw on a mythology built over many years. Longtime readers will therefore recognize more references, but newcomers do not have to read more than 300 back issues before trying the new titles.

If you would rather learn Al Simmons’s origin first, Spawn Origins Vol. 1 collects Spawn #1–6. That is an optional trip back to the franchise’s original starting point, not a mandatory part of the short 2021-era route.

Publication order is not a rigid in-universe timeline

The debut issues were published in this order: Spawn’s Universe #1 on June 23, 2021; King Spawn #1 on August 25, 2021; Gunslinger Spawn #1 on October 20, 2021; and The Scorched #1 on January 12, 2022. Although early announcements had targeted a 2021 release for The Scorched, Image’s listing for the published first issue gives January 2022.

The in-universe chronology does not always match publication order. A specialist collecting guide notes, for example, that the opening Gunslinger Spawn arc takes place before The Scorched #1. Once the stories begin to intersect more closely, an issue-by-issue interleaved order may be helpful. For a first read, the important distinction is between that strict chronology and the practical reading path suggested here.
