Metal Gear Solid Δ: does switching play styles restart the level?

Switching between New Style and Legacy Style reloads the current area in Metal Gear Solid Delta. Learn how to switch and what changes in the camera and aiming.

Yes. Switching between New Style and Legacy Style in Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater reloads the current map or level and sends Snake back to the beginning of that section. PlayStation Blog expressly warned about this in its August 22, 2025 hands-on report. It does not mean the entire campaign is erased or that a new game must be started.

In practical terms, switching after making progress through an area may mean traversing that section again. The official report does not specify how every temporary game state or save point is handled, so it would be misleading to promise that every recent action remains intact.

What happens if you switch styles during a mission?

The game lets you choose either control setup when starting, but the decision is not permanent. According to PlayStation's hands-on account, players may switch during a playthrough. The trade-off is a reload of the current area and a return to the start of the relevant section.

Three outcomes should be kept separate: restarting a section, restarting the whole campaign, and deleting a save file. The consulted documentation confirms the first. It does not describe the switch as wiping overall story progress or requiring a fresh campaign. To avoid repeating a difficult stretch, the safest approach is to experiment near the start of an area and use an available save before changing the setting.

How to switch between New Style and Legacy Style

GameWith's guide to the version of the remake covered in 2025 describes these steps:

  1. While playing, open the pause menu and select Options.
  2. Enter the Game settings section.
  3. Find Change Play Style or its equivalent in your interface language.
  4. Choose New Style or Legacy Style and confirm, keeping in mind that the section will reload.

The exact labels can differ depending on the game's language. This changes the play style for the ongoing game rather than merely remapping one individual controller button.

What changes in the camera, aiming and controls?

Producer Noriaki Okamura explained that the team aimed to preserve the identity of 2004's Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater without requiring newcomers to immediately master its older control scheme. The key distinction concerns how players see and control Snake, not a change to the remake's storyline.

Does switching the aiming view also reset the map?

Changing the aiming perspective is not the same as switching the entire play style. Within New Style, PlayStation's report describes switching from over-the-shoulder aiming to first-person view. It also says aim assist is enabled by default and can be turned off. Those are features within New Style; the reload warning specifically concerns changing between New Style and Legacy Style.

Therefore, players who only want to aim in first person do not need to select Legacy Style. The report does not connect ordinary use of this aiming view to a map restart.

Does the warning still apply after updates?

The clearest explanation of the section restart comes from a PS5 Pro hands-on session reported in August 2025. The producer also discussed changing styles in an Xbox Wire article, but that article did not explain what happens to the current area. Konami's January 26, 2026 notes for update 1.2.4, issued for all platforms, list text corrections and minor fixes, with no announced change to this rule.

As of the October 21, 2026 verification, the consulted official documents did not identify an explicit revision superseding PlayStation's warning. This is not proof that every situation works identically across PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC versions. To avoid surprises, assume switching will take you back to the beginning of the current section, and do it before advancing through a stretch you would rather not repeat.
