Spoiler warning: this article reveals the major twists and ending of Animals (2026).

In Animals (2026), Hector, not mayoral candidate Mark Kimball's son Denny, is kidnapped. The criminals mistake one boy for the other on Halloween. In the final confrontation, Hector's father Ramon kills the last kidnapper, saving both his son and Mark. The politician then rewrites the events to claim the heroic role and ends up winning the Los Angeles mayoral election.

The thriller directed, co-written by, and starring Ben Affleck premiered on Netflix on October 9, 2026. In Brazil, it is officially titled Sobrevivência; Animals is its original title. This distinction helps separate the film from unrelated productions with the same name.

How the wrong child is abducted: the Halloween sequence

  1. Two boys, matching costumes. Denny (Christopher Woodley) and Hector (Jacob Estrada) go trick-or-treating. Their identical or closely matching masked costumes cause the kidnappers to confuse them.
  2. The threat to the Kimballs. Mark (Ben Affleck) and Abigail (Kerry Washington) are told Denny has been taken. The criminal demands $7 million, and the parents believe their own son is in danger.
  3. The unexpected return. Denny comes home unharmed: he had become separated from housekeeper Cecilia (Adriana Paz) and found his way back. His arrival overturns the family's initial understanding.
  4. The victim's true identity. The child in captivity is Hector, the son of Ramon (Luis Gerardo Méndez), Cecilia's partner. The kidnapping has not ended; the family facing the immediate danger has changed.

The mistake changes the story's perspective. As long as everyone believes Denny is the victim, the Kimballs' money and influence are mobilized without hesitation. Once Hector is identified, the decision to help becomes entangled with Mark's electoral calculations.

Why doesn't Mark simply hand over the $7 million?

The Kimballs' prosperous image hides a problem: Mark has spent their money propping up his struggling campaign without telling Abigail. His campaign manager, Sam (Steven Yeun), turns to Dayle (Gillian Anderson), a fixer who can arrange the funds but charges heavily and takes the family home as collateral. What appeared to be a negotiation to save Denny becomes a decision about how much the Kimballs will sacrifice for Hector.

Dayle presents three choices: call the police, pay the ransom, or arrange to kill the kidnappers and recover the money. Mark chooses the third option. This resolves an important question about the ending: he brings the demanded cash to the exchange but does not intend to complete a peaceful payment. The plan calls for Rand (Chris Gann), who works for Dayle, to shoot the criminals.

Ramon faces a different predicament. As an undocumented resident of the United States, he lacks the Kimballs' protection, money, and political influence. He even confronts a man watching their property, but the suspect escapes. Meanwhile, Sam reminds Mark that his campaign needs Latino voters: abandoning Hector would carry public consequences. Family, moral, and electoral pressures now compete over every decision.

The Los Angeles River showdown, step by step

The exchange takes place in a run-down area beside the Los Angeles River. The approach crosses contrasting parts of the city, from affluent neighborhoods to industrial districts. Affleck told Tudum that this visual journey was designed to highlight the characters' social distance before bringing them together in one location.

  1. Mark enters the channel with the money. The kidnapper orders him by phone to descend the slope and count the stacks of cash. A man in a rabbit mask arrives with Hector in a small cart and pushes the boy downhill. Mark manages to catch him.
  2. Two masked men are shot. As the criminals approach the bag of money, Rand fires from his concealed position and kills both. The operation briefly appears successful.
  3. A third kidnapper appears. Dayle had calculated there were only two kidnappers. A third, hidden gunman shoots Rand and Dayle. Rand dies and Dayle is gravely wounded. Mark and Hector are in danger again.
  4. Ramon intervenes. After finding out where Mark is headed and following him, Hector's father shoots the final criminal, stopping the attack. Ramon secures his son's escape and prevents Mark from being killed.

The decisive shots are therefore not fired by Mark: Rand kills the first two kidnappers, and Ramon eliminates the third. Dayle dies following the attack. The film does not fully identify the trio or explain the entire background to their revenge. The public account Mark later gives erases precisely these distinctions.

What happens to Mark, Hector, and Ramon afterward?

Hector survives and is reunited with his father. Ramon, Cecilia, and the boy ultimately move to Mexico with the money that had been under Dayle's control. The outcome is bittersweet: Ramon saves two lives, yet the exposure of his immigration status leads him to leave the United States. The rescue gives him resources to start over, without public recognition for the shot that ended the confrontation.

Mark turns the tragedy into political capital. He takes Dayle's phone, which contains incriminating records of decisions made during the crisis, and is involved in hiding the bodies and evidence. He then maintains a version of events in which Ramon searched for his son but Mark himself shot the kidnapper. The politician receives a relatively mild punishment, including one year of probation and community service. He subsequently wins the Los Angeles mayoral race with increased support from Latino voters.

Abigail stays with Mark. The crisis exposes his secret use of their savings to fund the campaign and her affair with Ron Sperling (Ray Fisher). They argue and decide to stay together. That does not mean their moral conflicts are resolved: by the ending, their partnership also protects Mark's constructed public narrative. During a television interview he deflects a question about running for president; the film hints at a future ambition but does not show a presidential campaign.

Four assumptions the ending overturns

Initial assumptionWhat the ending confirms
Denny was kidnapped.Hector was taken by mistake; Denny returned home.
Dayle has the kidnappers under control. She underestimates them: there are three men, not two.
Mark pays an ordinary ransom. He brings the money but chooses an armed ambush.
Mark kills the last criminal and saves Hector alone.Ramon shoots the third man and saves Hector and Mark.

Why does Ramon become the protagonist at the end?

The shift is not merely an audience interpretation. Ben Affleck told Tudum he wanted Mark to move into the background and Ramon to take over the ending's central role. According to the director, the change is intended to disrupt familiar storytelling expectations without turning the twist into a gimmick. The result separates the person who performs the decisive action from the person with the influence to claim credit afterward.

It is also important to distinguish fact from interpretation: the film establishes that Ramon kills the last kidnapper and Mark receives the public credit; the editorial reading is that the contrast exposes how class, political power, and immigration status shape who gets to be called a hero. Luis Gerardo Méndez makes a similar point in his Tudum comments about Ramon potentially being treated as a criminal for the very act that turns Mark into an admired figure.
