Wicked: For Good: Which Songs Are New, and Which Was Already on Broadway?

Wicked: For Good has two songs written for the movie. The Wicked Witch of the East was already performed on stage, although it was omitted from the original 2003 Broadway cast album.

Wicked: For Good features two original songs written for the film: “No Place Like Home,” performed by Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, and “The Girl in the Bubble,” performed by Ariana Grande as Glinda. “The Wicked Witch of the East,” however, is not a newly written song: it was already part of the stage musical but was left off the 2003 Original Broadway Cast Recording. Confusing a song's debut with its first inclusion on a commercial album is the source of much of the misunderstanding.

Minor spoiler warning: this comparison discusses the dramatic purpose of some songs in the story's second act, without revealing the ending.

Which two songs were written for Wicked: For Good?

In its November 21, 2025 announcement of Wicked: For Good - The Soundtrack, Universal Music Brazil explicitly identifies two new Stephen Schwartz compositions. The song list on Schwartz's own website likewise labels only “No Place Like Home” and “The Girl in the Bubble” as new song. They qualify as new because they were composed for the film adaptation, not merely because they appear on the 2025 album.

“No Place Like Home” is Elphaba's number, sung by Cynthia Erivo. In an interview with ELLE, Schwartz explained that the song was conceived to show her attachment to Oz: Elphaba tries to persuade animals preparing to leave to stay and resist. The songwriter said the number went through several versions before reaching its form in the film.

“The Girl in the Bubble” belongs to Glinda, played by Ariana Grande. According to Schwartz, it gives her room to acknowledge how sheltered and privileged her life has been and to consider what she is prepared to change. He said he wrote this song first, and relatively quickly. These are the composer's stated intentions, rather than an invented interpretation of the film.

Which song existed on stage but was missing from the 2003 album?

That song is “The Wicked Witch of the East.” The Broadway database IBDB lists it in Act Two of the original Wicked production, which opened on October 30, 2003, and credits it to Elphaba, Nessarose and Boq. In other words, the number was part of the theatrical show long before Wicked: For Good.

The confusion arises because the original cast album, released on December 16, 2003, omitted the number. Ticketmaster reports that the omission was meant to avoid spoiling the plot, since the sequence involves substantial dialogue and important story developments. This explains why the recording was absent, not why the stage song would have been absent.

The 2025 film soundtrack credits the number to Marissa Bode, Cynthia Erivo and Ethan Slater. Republic Records describes it as a track not previously included on the Original Broadway Cast Recording. This is a new recording of an existing stage number, not a third newly written Schwartz song for the film.

Side-by-side: new to the film or new to the album?

What about other tracks with different titles or recordings?

The movie album, released on November 21, 2025, contains 11 tracks. Several are familiar numbers from the show's second half, including “Thank Goodness / I Couldn’t Be Happier,” “Wonderful,” “I’m Not That Girl (Reprise),” “As Long As You’re Mine,” “No Good Deed,” “March of the Witch Hunters” and “For Good.” They are new performances in an adaptation, which does not automatically make them new compositions.

The opening track, “Every Day More Wicked,” also has its own title on the 2025 track list. It is important to distinguish track titles, film arrangements and songs written from scratch: Schwartz's repertoire list and the label's announcement still identify only two new compositions. A track listing alone is not grounds to count every differently named or presented number as a newly written song.

Why add two songs to the screen adaptation?

Schwartz told ELLE that the filmmakers identified two points at which music would best express what was happening inside the main characters. “No Place Like Home” deepens Elphaba's relationship with Oz; “The Girl in the Bubble” accompanies a defining moment of self-reflection for Glinda. The Broadway comparison therefore reveals a specific adaptation choice: adding two character solos while retaining the established musical structure of Act Two.

The answer depends on what, exactly, is being counted. Songs written specifically for the film: two. A number that already existed on stage but appears on the movie album after being omitted from the original Broadway recording: “The Wicked Witch of the East.” “For Good” and the other familiar numbers belong to the earlier theatrical score, now performed by the film cast.
