Once a Final Fantasy XIV account moves from the Free Trial to the full game through the Starter Edition, it cannot return to the Free Trial. This does not depend on whether a subscription is currently being paid: Square Enix's terms state that purchasing a version of the game removes Free Trial eligibility. The 30 days included with the Starter Edition are initial game time for the paid version, not an extension of the subscription-free trial.
One distinction matters before buying: the eligibility rules refer to purchasing the game, while activation instructions distinguish acquiring a code from registering it to a service account. Confusing those events, or assuming the 30-day period starts with the first paid subscription charge, can lead to the wrong decision.
Free Trial versus Starter Edition: more than a content difference
On the official page checked in October 2026, the Free Trial allows progression up to level 80 with no playtime limit. It includes A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, Stormblood and Shadowbringers, but restricts social and economic features such as the market board, trading with other players, hiring retainers and joining Free Companies. Square Enix may change these conditions.
The Starter Edition is a commercial license for the full game. It removes trial-specific restrictions and includes an eligible initial 30-day play period, but continued access afterward requires a subscription. Buying the Starter Edition does not automatically provide every later expansion, either: check the official edition comparison before making a purchase.
| Question | Free Trial | Registered Starter Edition |
|---|---|---|
| How long can you play? | No time limit while the account remains eligible | Eligible initial 30 days; a subscription is then required |
| Social and trading features | Restricted | Trial-specific restrictions lifted |
| Return to the Free Trial | Remains a trial while eligible | No return on the same upgraded account |
What ends the trial: the purchase, the code or registration?
The Free Trial terms, updated April 27, 2026, state that players who purchase any version of the game are no longer eligible for the Free Trial on any platform. This formal rule should guide the purchasing decision.
The activation process, however, differs by store. On Windows, Mac and Steam, the retail license is linked to a service account using a registration code and the Mog Station upgrade process. Steam's official instructions explicitly separate buying the game, obtaining a code and registering it. It is therefore inaccurate to say every PC code purchase instantly starts the 30-day game-time period. Equally, an unredeemed code should not be treated as proof that the Free Trial terms still allow access.
For digitally purchased console versions, the storefront can grant the license before it is assigned to a service account when the game is launched. Check the specific situation in Mog Station and the platform guidance instead of applying PC registration rules everywhere.
When do the 30 days begin, and when is a subscription needed?
Square Enix says that registering an eligible full-game copy to a service account grants 30 days of game time, a benefit associated with the Starter Edition or Complete Edition. The product page adds that this period can only be granted once per platform on a given service account and does not apply again to a platform with an existing registered license.
After the included period ends, continuing to play the full game requires an active subscription. Letting a subscription expire, stopping payment or staying away from the game does not reactivate the Free Trial. Nor does it turn a purchased license into a free account. Check the actual activation status and remaining game time on the service account instead of inferring them solely from the transaction date.
A decision tree to follow before buying
- Want to keep playing without a subscription? Stay on the Free Trial while it meets your needs. Do not buy the Starter Edition expecting to return to the same trial later.
- Need locked features such as the market board or Free Companies? Upgrading may be worthwhile if you accept the future subscription requirement.
- Want content beyond the Starter Edition? Compare Starter, Complete Edition and the expansions required on your platform. An expansion alone is not a substitute for the base-game license.
- Already purchased a code but unsure whether it was registered? Check your service account status and purchase details before activating anything. The operational distinction does not override the official eligibility rules; ask support if uncertain.
- Already upgraded? Check your remaining game time and subscription status in Mog Station. The next step is managing or restoring paid access, not returning to the Free Trial.
Service accounts, Steam and switching platforms
A Square Enix Account is the primary login, while a service account holds a Final Fantasy XIV license and its access rights. One Square Enix Account may contain multiple service accounts, but that does not convert an upgraded account back into a Free Trial. Square Enix also limits the trial to one platform per Square Enix ID. Creating a separate account does not automatically restore characters from the old one.
Another common mistake is treating standalone Windows and Steam as interchangeable. Their PC licenses cannot be registered to the same service account. Official support also specifies that a Free Trial begun through Steam must upgrade using the Steam version. Existing Free Trial characters are retained when their original service account is correctly upgraded, so players do not have to start over.
How to check your account in Mog Station
Sign in to Mog Station with the correct Square Enix Account, choose the relevant service account and open Service Account Status. Its platform table lists which licenses are registered. Also check the subscription status and remaining game time. If the edition you bought is missing, check the platform, account region and platform-specific activation instructions before buying another copy.
The practical decision comes before upgrading: the Free Trial can remain free and time-unlimited within its restrictions, while the Starter Edition moves the account to a full-license and subscription model. This October 2026 check reflects the then-published official rules, which can change; subscription prices and special platform arrangements have not been generalized across regions.
