Spoiler warning: this article reveals the entire story and ending of Tremors (1990).

In Tremors (1990), Val McKee and Earl Bassett try to save the residents of Perfection, Nevada, from four underground creatures that hunt by detecting vibrations in the ground. By the end of the film, all four Graboids are dead, but each meets a different fate: one crashes into a concrete barrier, another is shot by Burt and Heather Gummer, the third swallows an explosive, and Val drives the last one over a cliff. The sequence of these deaths is crucial to understanding the ending.

How the attacks begin in Perfection

Val and Earl make a living doing odd jobs and decide to leave the tiny community of Perfection. On their way out, they find Edgar Deems dead on top of an electrical tower. He died of dehydration after remaining up there rather than coming down, behavior that only makes sense once the underground threat is revealed.

The pair then discover sheep farmer Fred dead, his flock slaughtered. Nearby, road workers Carmine and Howard also become victims: Carmine is dragged away by a creature while operating a pneumatic tool, and Howard is killed by falling rocks. The road is blocked, the telephone lines are dead, and getting help from beyond the valley grows increasingly difficult.

After escaping another attack in their truck, Val and Earl discover a snake-like appendage caught on its axle. It looks like a separate small monster, but the explanation comes later: it is one of the tentacles inside a much larger creature's mouth. Meanwhile, local doctor Jim and his wife Megan are attacked near their trailer. Jim is pulled beneath the ground, and the earth swallows Megan's car.

The Graboids are revealed and the first creature dies

Unable to leave Perfection by road, Val and Earl try to reach help on horseback. One of their horses is attacked and an enormous creature bursts from the ground after the men. During the chase, the monster slams into the concrete wall of a drainage channel and dies on impact. This is the first Graboid death, occurring before the residents devise any elaborate defense.

Seismology student Rhonda LeBeck finds the pair and examines the body. The creature has no visible eyes, and tentacles protrude from its mouth, explaining the fragment found on the truck. Rhonda's seismic recordings suggest at least three more monsters. Another Graboid soon traps all three people on a cluster of rocks; they realize it tracks movements and sounds transmitted through the soil. The next morning they use poles to cross the gaps between the rocks and reach Rhonda's truck.

The town attacks, Walter's death, and Burt and Heather's defense

Back in Perfection, the group warns their neighbors. Storekeeper Walter Chang gives the creatures the name Graboids. Attacks reach the town itself: Melvin must flee a monster, Rhonda gets caught in barbed wire, and Val comes to her aid. A Graboid then breaks through the market floor and drags Walter to his death. Residents seek refuge on rooftops while Rhonda reaches the water tower.

At Burt and Heather Gummer's home, another creature breaks through the walls of their shelter. They respond with their collection of weapons and shoot it dead. This is the second Graboid killed, leaving two alive. The monsters are no longer merely chasing footsteps, however: they begin shaking structures. One topples Nestor's trailer, knocking him from his elevated refuge and dragging him underground.

Val, Earl, and the others realize that staying on the buildings will not keep them safe. They plan an evacuation toward the mountains and their rocky ground. A moving lawn mower, deliberate noise, and water released by Rhonda provide distractions while Val reaches a tracked loader and attaches a trailer. The residents climb aboard; Burt and Heather bring guns and homemade explosives.

The desert trap and the final two deaths

The escape toward the rocks fails when the two remaining Graboids cause the vehicle to drop into a pit dug in its path. The group abandons the transport and scrambles onto elevated rocks, only to find itself surrounded again. Burt's explosives become their only immediate offensive option.

Earl attracts one creature by throwing stones and sends out a lit charge for it to swallow. The blast kills the third Graboid. The same approach fails against the last one: the creature spits the bomb back, setting off the remaining explosives and forcing Val, Earl, and Rhonda away from their safe position.

Val changes tactics. Carrying their last charge, he runs toward a cliff edge and draws the monster after him. He throws the explosive behind the creature, and the blast drives it forward. Unable to stop its charge, the fourth Graboid passes over the edge and dies on the rocks below. The ending does not depend on a more powerful weapon: Val turns the predator's momentum and the terrain against it.

All four Graboids: order and cause of death

OrderLocationHow the Graboid diesWho helps resolve it
1stDrainage channel with a concrete barrierCrashes into the concrete while chasing the menVal and Earl escape; the death is accidental
2ndBurt and Heather's shelterIs killed by the couple's gunfireBurt and Heather
3rdRocks on the route to the mountainsSwallows a lit explosive chargeEarl and the survivors
4thCliff edgeIs driven over the edge and crashes onto rocksVal, with Earl and Rhonda fleeing alongside him

This count covers the four animals identified in the story. The snake-like tentacles are parts of their mouths, not extra Graboids; nor does the film establish exactly which individual monster carried out every attack before the creatures were identified.

Who survives and what the ending actually explains

Val, Earl, Rhonda, Burt, and Heather survive, as do Nancy, Mindy, Miguel, and Melvin. The deaths shown include Edgar, Fred, Carmine, Howard, Jim, Megan, Walter, and Nestor. The film ends the immediate threat posed by those four Graboids in the area without providing a definitive scientific origin for the species. Rhonda considers the discovery extraordinary, but her hypotheses are not confirmed explanations of the animals' age or where they came from.

After the battle, the story returns to its central characters: Val, previously determined to leave, grows closer to Rhonda, and they kiss. The conflict is resolved through an understanding of vibrations, the shelter offered by rocky surfaces, and collective improvisation. Explosives help, but the last monster is defeated only because the chase carries it into terrain from which it cannot recover.
