Spoiler warning: this article reveals the entire story and ending of Leprechaun (1993).

In Leprechaun (1993), the pursuit begins when Daniel O'Grady steals one hundred gold coins from an Irish creature. Ten years later, Tory Redding and her new acquaintances accidentally free it. In the climax, Tory finds the four-leaf clover that can weaken the creature, Alex fires it into the monster's mouth, and Nathan sets fire to the well into which it falls. A final voice from the well, however, leaves the threat unresolved.

Written and directed by Mark Jones, the horror comedy stars Warwick Davis as the leprechaun and Jennifer Aniston as Tory. This recap covers only the film released in the United States on January 8, 1993, with a 92-minute running time according to the American Film Institute (AFI). It does not incorporate events from any sequel.

How did O'Grady steal the gold and imprison the leprechaun?

Daniel O'Grady returns from Ireland to his North Dakota farm and tells his wife that he captured a leprechaun and took its treasure. The creature follows him home. When it emerges inside the house, Mrs. O'Grady falls to her death down the basement stairs. Her husband tries to fight back with a gun and discovers that a four-leaf clover weakens the intruder's powers.

O'Grady locks the leprechaun in a crate, places the clover on its lid and prepares to burn the makeshift prison. Before he can carry out his plan, he suffers a stroke. The creature therefore remains trapped in the house, while the secret of the clover stays with the man who first confronted it.

Ten years later: Tory arrives and the creature is accidentally released

J. D. Redding comes to stay at the old property with his daughter Tory, who is from Los Angeles. While the house undergoes repairs, they meet Nathan Murphy, his younger brother Alex, and Ozzie Jones. Tory initially dislikes the condition of the house but decides to stay after meeting Nathan.

Exploring the basement, Tory and Nathan discover the crate. Later, Ozzie investigates the sound of a child's voice and inadvertently brushes away the clover resting on the lid. Without that protection, the leprechaun breaks free. Ozzie warns the others, but his story seems too absurd to believe. Removing the clover, rather than any ritual performed by Tory, is what releases the creature.

The missing coin: why is returning the gold not enough?

Ozzie follows a rainbow with Alex and discovers a gold coin. When he bites it to check whether it is real, he accidentally swallows it. Alex finds a bag with the other 99 coins. They hide the treasure in the property's well, thinking they might use it to help Ozzie.

That split explains the monster's obsession: the amount of gold the characters can recover does not account for the hundredth coin. The creature is not simply after a bag of riches. It demands that not one piece of its collection remain beyond its reach.

The attacks and killings during the hunt for the treasure

The first victim is Mrs. O'Grady, in the prologue. During the pursuit ten years later, the leprechaun injures Tory and bites J. D.'s hand, requiring medical treatment. Alex and Ozzie take a coin to a shop to have it assessed; after they leave, the monster kills the proprietor by attacking him with a pogo stick. It also pursues a police officer who stops it on the road and eventually breaks his neck in the woods.

The violence continues at the farmhouse. Nathan catches his leg in a trap, Ozzie's call to the police is not taken seriously, and the leprechaun uses a small vehicle to attack the group as they try to leave. The danger extends even to people who had nothing to do with the original theft: the creature attacks those it encounters while trying to recover its coins. The movie combines these deaths and assaults with grimly comic situations.

Why does the leprechaun keep attacking after getting its gold back?

When Alex reveals where they hid the treasure, Tory retrieves it from the well and hands over what they found. For a moment, the pursuit seems as though it could end without another fight. But counting the pieces reveals the coin Ozzie swallowed. The leprechaun attacks again because it considers its gold collection incomplete.

Nathan's gunshots are not enough to stop it: with its magic restored, the enemy can return to the fight. Ozzie then remembers that O'Grady survived the first encounter and lives in a care facility. Tory goes to see him to learn the weakness that might end the hunt.

How do Tory, Alex and Nathan defeat the leprechaun?

O'Grady tells Tory to look for a four-leaf clover, the plant that allowed him to imprison the monster ten years earlier. Tory returns to the property and searches for one while the creature threatens her friends. Alex prepares a trap in the barn but is attacked. Their escape depends on combined efforts, not on Tory defeating the leprechaun alone in combat.

  1. Tory finds the clover: she obtains the plant that can neutralize the enemy's power.
  2. Alex hits the target: he uses a slingshot to launch the clover into the leprechaun's mouth.
  3. The creature falls into the well: its body begins to disintegrate, but the remains still try to climb out.
  4. Nathan sets fire to the well: he uses gasoline and fire to prevent the monster's immediate return.

The crucial step is the clover touching the creature. Fire enters the sequence only after the clover causes its body to deteriorate, when the remains still pose a danger of escaping.

Ending explained: did the leprechaun die, and what happened to Tory?

After the explosion, the police arrive and Tory reunites with her father, who was injured during the attacks. Alex, Nathan and Ozzie survive the final confrontation alongside her. The group stops the immediate pursuit without handing over the coin Ozzie swallowed.

The unsettling detail comes from the well itself: the leprechaun's voice can still be heard, insisting it will keep searching for every last piece of its gold. The film therefore presents a physical defeat of the creature but does not establish its permanent destruction. The threat remains in the final scene; that is not proof that it has already escaped.

The chain of events is straightforward: O'Grady steals the gold and learns the clover's role; Ozzie brushes the clover off the crate and swallows a coin; Tory returns the treasure, but the missing piece keeps the conflict alive; and the same type of clover, now delivered by Alex, allows Nathan to stop the monster in the well.
