Warning: the following article contains full spoilers for Scream 2 (1997), including the killers’ identities and the ending.
The sequel begins inside a movie
Directed by Wes Craven and written by Kevin Williamson, Scream 2 (1997) follows Sidney Prescott at college after the Woodsboro murders. The new killers are Mickey Altieri, a fellow student, and a woman posing as reporter Debbie Salt, who is actually Billy Loomis’s mother. Mickey wants fame through a criminal trial; she wants revenge on Sidney for her son’s death.
The first attack occurs during a screening of Stab, a fictional movie dramatizing the original film’s murders. Phil Stevens is killed in the theater bathroom, and Maureen Evans is murdered amid an audience wearing Ghostface costumes. Spectators mistake the real violence for part of the show. The sequel moves the threat into a world where Sidney’s own story has become entertainment.
What the clues actually suggest
At Windsor College, Sidney reunites with Randy Meeks, another 1996 survivor. Gale Weathers and Dewey Riley arrive to investigate. New characters include Hallie, Sidney’s friend; Derek, her boyfriend; Mickey, Derek’s friend; and the persistent journalist Debbie Salt. Cotton Weary, cleared of murdering Sidney’s mother, also seeks media attention.
After Cici Cooper is killed at a sorority house, Gale notices similarities between the new victims’ names and those of the Woodsboro victims: Cici’s given name, Casey, supports a possible pattern. It is a plausible clue, but it does not establish who wears the mask or whether the pattern will continue.
Randy suspects someone close to Sidney and discusses how horror sequels try to outdo their predecessors. His theory about Sidney’s social circle points toward Mickey, but the movie does not reveal the answer immediately. Derek looks suspicious at moments, especially as Mickey exploits Sidney’s uncertainty, but Derek is a victim, not an accomplice. Debbie, by contrast, stays close to the investigation under the guise of a minor reporter.
The deaths change the investigation
Randy responds to the killer’s taunting phone call on campus and is pulled into Gale’s news van, where he is killed. Later, while Gale and Dewey review footage for clues, Ghostface attacks Dewey. The editing suggests his death, but the ending overturns that impression.
Police attempt to move Sidney and Hallie away from campus. During the transfer, Ghostface kills their police escorts; after a crash, Sidney and Hallie escape the car. Sidney wants to return to identify the masked attacker, but the killer disappears and murders Hallie. Her determination to get an answer consumes precious time and destroys her remaining sense of safety.
Who are the two killers, and what do they want?
At the college theater, Sidney finds Derek restrained against a stage prop. Ghostface unmasks as Mickey and kills Derek after suggesting the boyfriend might be his partner. Mickey intends to admit to the murders and turn a trial about violent movies’ influence into a media spectacle.
The supposed journalist Debbie Salt then appears holding Gale at gunpoint. Sidney recognizes her as the mother of Billy Loomis, a killer from the first movie. Her motive is personal: revenge for Billy, whom Sidney killed at the end of the Woodsboro attacks. Mrs. Loomis uses Mickey as an accomplice and intends to leave him taking the blame; she then shoots him. The sequel draws on the family history mentioned in 1996 without suggesting that Billy or Stu have returned from the dead.
The reveal also changes how Randy’s death is understood: Mrs. Loomis admits killing him after hearing him insult Billy. It would therefore be inaccurate to assign every attack automatically to the same member of the duo. The partnership is confirmed, but the film does not identify the masked perpetrator behind every incident with equal clarity.
The ending for Sidney, Gale, Dewey, and Cotton
After struggling with Mrs. Loomis, Sidney is helped by Cotton Weary, who intervenes and shoots her. Mickey gets up again and is shot dead by Sidney and Gale. Sidney fires another shot into Mrs. Loomis to make sure she cannot attack again. Gale survives the injury sustained during the showdown.
Dewey is also found alive, although badly wounded. Gale chooses to accompany him in the ambulance rather than immediately resume her reporting. Sidney instead directs reporters toward Cotton, who has been seeking public recognition. The ending does not erase her trauma or promise that danger is over, but it does show Sidney reclaiming some control over her public exposure.
How it differs from Scream (1996)
In the original, Billy Loomis and Stu Macher attack people connected to Sidney’s life in Woodsboro; the sequel moves to college, where the commercialization of the earlier tragedy has become part of the story through Stab.
The use of two killers repeats, but their motivations differ: Mickey wants a sensational media trial, while Mrs. Loomis seeks family revenge. The victims’ matching names, the suspicion surrounding Derek, and Debbie’s unobtrusive presence are clues and diversions that fully make sense only after the reveal.
