Warframe account linking does not merge inventories. Which account should be primary?

Account Merging ended in 2025. Learn what linking keeps, what it overrides, and how to choose your Primary Account without expecting combined inventories.

Linking Warframe accounts does not combine their inventories. Account Merging, which previously combined items from eligible accounts, ended on January 17, 2025. Cross Platform Save still works through Account Linking: you select a Primary Account and use its progression and inventory on every connected platform. The choice is permanent, so comparing your accounts before confirming matters.

The key question is not which device you intend to play on next, but which set of accomplishments and items you want to keep as your foundation. A higher Mastery Rank does not necessarily make one account the right choice if the other holds rewards that would be difficult to obtain again. The official documentation also provides exceptions for certain real-money purchases, but those exceptions are not the same as the former full inventory merge.

Why are merging and linking no longer interchangeable?

Under the former Account Merging system, eligible players could combine inventories from different platforms, although quest progression still came from the Primary Account. The feature had historical eligibility requirements, including accounts created before November 24, 2023, and required ongoing maintenance as new game content was released. Digital Extremes announced its retirement in November 2024 and ended it on January 17, 2025, as confirmed by the FAQ and support documentation.

Account Linking works differently. It establishes one account as the source of progression, equipment and ordinary items. A Secondary Account is no longer accessible as a separate progression record because its data is overridden by the Primary Account. Linking an old account that once qualified for merging does not restore the retired feature.

What does the Primary Account keep, and what happens to secondary inventory?

According to the official guide, the Primary Account supplies quest completion, Syndicate ranks, Focus, Intrinsics, Helminth unlocks, character progression and the inventory available on linked platforms. Ordinary items, resources and progression held only by a Secondary Account are not automatically added to the Primary Account. Linking is not a way to selectively transfer weapons, Warframes or Mastery Ranks.

There is an important qualification: since June 19, 2024, certain real-money purchases on Secondary Accounts have been retained during linking, including retroactive treatment of previously affected accounts. The official list includes TennoGen items bought with real money through Steam, Prime Access content excluding Platinum and Boosters, Heirloom Packs excluding Platinum, and qualifying purchased or claimed bundles from partner services excluding Credits, Platinum and Boosters. The detailed announcement also says that an item previously sold, traded or otherwise removed from the Secondary Account cannot transfer under this provision.

These exceptions do not restore the complete secondary inventory: items bought with Platinum, Boosters, promotional-code rewards and the Secondary Account's Platinum itself are not included in the linking transfer list. TennoGen items may also remain restricted to the platforms covered by their licenses. The separate issue of Platinum balances and trading requires its own explanation and does not change how a Primary Account should be chosen.

Two examples involving different inventories

These are hypothetical examples to illustrate the decision, not actual player accounts or an option to transfer individual items at will.

Accounts before linkingWhat choosing a Primary Account meansWhat will not happen
PC: Mastery Rank 12, several old weapons and a rare reward. PlayStation: Mastery Rank 25, more quests completed and regularly used gear.Making PlayStation primary keeps that account's progression and inventory; making PC primary keeps its weapons and rare reward, along with its less advanced progression. You cannot keep PlayStation's Mastery Rank 25 and automatically add the ordinary weapons from PC.
PC: nearly empty newly created account. Xbox: older account with Warframes, resources and advanced quest progress.A PC account is needed for the setup process, but Xbox can be designated the Primary Account so its data becomes the foundation on both platforms.Creating a PC account does not require you to make it primary or merge the two inventories.

A checklist before you confirm account linking

  1. Inspect each account separately. Note Mastery Rank, completed quests, system progression and the items you actually use. Compare their current contents, not just playtime.
  2. List anything difficult to replace. Check Warframes, weapons, resources, cosmetics, event rewards and items with personal value. Record which account holds each one.
  3. Distinguish ordinary inventory from eligible premium purchases. Consult the official exceptions rather than assuming Platinum-bought items or items no longer owned by the secondary account will move over.
  4. Create or verify your PC Warframe account. It is required to set up Cross Platform Save through Account Management, even if you never plan to play on a PC. You can link one account from each platform, one at a time.
  5. Double-check the Primary Account selection before final approval. Proceed only if you accept using that progress as the permanent foundation. Afterwards, verify the confirmation message and your status in Account Management.

Does the PC account have to be the Primary Account?

No. The official requirement is to have or create a PC Warframe account to configure linking, not to make its progression your Primary Account. If your most valuable account is on PlayStation, Xbox or another supported platform, your choice should still be based on the progression and inventory you want to preserve. Account Management is the official place to begin and confirm the setup.

What if I link the wrong account?

Digital Extremes describes linking as permanent and states that secondary inventory and progression become inaccessible. It would therefore be misleading to promise that support can reverse the operation or recover items. If something goes wrong or behaves unexpectedly, document the issue through official support, identifying the accounts and platforms involved, without assuming an undo is possible.

A question posted on the official forum in August 2026 illustrates the continuing dilemma: a player with more progression on one account wanted to retain items from another. Community replies help illustrate the question, but Digital Extremes' published rules determine the limits. If both inventories are essential to you, do not confirm linking on the assumption that you can merge them later.
